It's not just here. You go anywhere around the country, and the number of people who claim Native American heritage seem to outnumber actual Native Americans about 10 to 1. I personally suspect that there are lots of little "family legends" passed on about Native American background that might be a little skewed.
In my case, I stopped mentioning it for a number of years, just because it seemed to be unverifiable - that side of my family was hillbillies, sharecroppers, and mostly born at home. But then I ran across an old picture of my grandfather's family. Whoa. There's no doubt.

I'm 100% Filipino but if you knew anything about the history of the Philippine islands it's probably a good mix of Malay, Chinese and Spanish somewhere down the line.

I totally agree with you Jay.
It's seem's like everyone say's they are native american. The only reason I have for knowing I am is that I have a certificate from the government saying I am.
When my father joined the navy the recruiter asked for proff of his tribal affiliation and they took his blood to make sure that it was native american.
According to my father we are from the Lakota Sioux tribe.
Im sure a lot of people do have a smal amount of NA blood in them but then again I think that very few americans are 100% of any ethnnicity.

most of the time if you try to get a scholarship or anything else regarding being of American Indian or Native American background you have to show current membership to a tribe. I think application for membership is brought forth to the tribal council who looks at lineage and if there are current biological relatives that are members. Plus I think that some tribes you have to have a certain amount like a least 1/8.
