but going back to my original point, where is that in this thread? :-\ my whole thing is i dont understand the point of a thread saying, "hey! non white people! whats your ethnicity?" they arent discussing anything about discrimination or struggles or anything. thats been done in other threads, and i understand those. this type, however, i don't.

I think it's because this thread is moving so fast but I gave my reasoning, or what I take to be the reasoning of the OP a few posts back. Here it is:

"I just see it as support or rather, a way to let others know they're not alone in an industry dominated by white people".

first of, the previous post and this one isn't violating the terms of agreements on SW.
so whats wrong with someone wanting to acknowledge other WOC on here?whats so wrong about that? Is still the same as a european stripper coming on here and asking to acknowledge other european stippers of their ethnicity.

i like when we can have discussions like this without it turning into a crazy flame war.

like brit, i still don't really see it the same way as others, but i guess that might be because i've never really experienced or seen a lot of racial segregation in my life. so i don't have as broad of an understanding of it as some people.

What I think some people dont understand is that we feel support knowing who the other WOC are here and what our back grounds are. I dont see how that is a problem to anyone honestly.
No one has complained about any other threads which are aimed at certain groups of people.

yes, i'm sure i would. you took what i said the wrong way. i wasn't saying "i wouldn't post about being discriminated against because i'm white, so you shouldn't post about being discriminated against for being a WOC". i was saying that "i would never post about being discriminated against being white because i never have been". i was just pointing out the difference between a thread for discussion and support, and a thread for nothing other than listing your ethnicity.

Thats a good point Darcy. It wouldnt hurt to make the effort to learn a bit about a subject before diving into a thread and criticizing it. It shows that you dont really understand and thats frustrating for anyone who does. Look how much this thread has been derailed too. Theres no need for it. We dont have a problem with the non WOC end of story. Theres no need to assume that something else is going on in our WOC threads :)

All of those threads exist here already!

No ones said white people dont get discriminated against either.
However, as I said in the other thread I look white but I didnt always look white. Life is MUCH easier when you look white, its a breese. Almost of my family are white and almost all of my friends too, I dont see them having too many hasstles for it but if you do need a thread of your own by all means start one.

yup, exactly!

and also, i COULD start a thread about how black guys generally will not buy dances from me, or how im one of the few girls at my club with a flat ass, who dances to rock music, and is so out of place when i dance on stage. but it would get ugly i feel like, and i dont see the point. i can see that going downhill so fast.. because i'm sure i dont understand what it's like to be discriminated against since i'm white.

A bit off topic:
I'm making some vegetable stir fry noodle. would anyone like to try some?
i never mentioned that i loved cooking, and i love food. i'd love for anyone to try my food someday. let me know what you want, and when you'll be coming into my area, and what you'd like to eat. i'll fix it to your satisfaction. i use olive oil, which is healthy for me.

I love white women. my ex gf's are white....the same goes for any other race out there too...nothing but love over here.

so give a shout out a sister if you wanna try some gooooooooood food...

^ of course! lol...food is really important. you have to eat to face the world. you can't face it with an empty stomach...you have to be able to think right...

one of my ex giflfriend, white... when i mean white, she's as pale as she can be. and she was a vegetarian too, and anemic. when she met me, i changed her diet. i was cooking for her and making sure she had her vegies, iron, and protein. she told me one time we were together, she went to the doctor, and the first time, the doctor told her she had normal red blood cell count... when she was with me, she stopped taking her iron pills. she started putting on a little stomach too lol...cute...

anyway, didn't mean to go wildly off topic...just wanted to share something real about me, and to ease the thread a little...

Just want to say (although it's somewhat arbitrary after that whole misunderstanding) that I get discriminated against being white in a culture that is predominantly hispanic. I have seen hispanic girls make more money routinely because of their race.
However I think it's to be expected. As much as it sucks, like attracts like, very commonly when it comes to race. So naturally a black woman is not going to be favored in a very "white" environment. It's not fair, it's stupid and if I were the customer I would be all about giving my money to the black girls, but that is the sad truth.
One of my first experiences with racism was when I was young and my mother owned rental properties in the inner city of Buffalo. It is very much a black community. I remember waiting in the car for her to return with someone's rent and a little black boy was standing on a balcony looking down at me. I smiled at him and he replied, "What are you lookin' at, UGLY!?". I knew it was because of my race and it hurt because I wasn't seeing him as a black person, but another kid who I could maybe kill some time talking to while waiting for my mom.

Every race is discriminated against in a culture that is not predominantly made up of that race.

I think everyone has been discriminated against at one point or another. I got the shock of my life when I was living in Waianae, HI which is the "ghetto" of Hawaii. They do NOT like howlies and esp blond ones. I was in line (about 5 back) at the local grocery store and when i got to the front of the line the checker looked at me, turned the light off and walked away. THAT was the first time I ever experienced race discrimination. But I have to say thats pretty much the ONLY time.

I honestly could not comprehand going to work and being discriminated against daily. I can understand how WOC want to know who else is out there struggling with discrimination. Ive been discriminated against for being blond or too tall or too old or even for being a dancer but those are nothing like being discriminated against for race. I see nothing wrong with women on here wanting to see who else is Black, Latin, whatever... I find it interesting because I had no clue some of these girls were WOC and tho it doesnt matter really it will make me read further into some posts about struggles within the industry.

I hope that came out right.... sometimes its hard for me to word things the correct way...

So what exactly is included in the "WOC" category? Just anyone who is anything other than white, or just black girls? This isn't a sarcastic question, I really do want to know.

Its generally women who derive from non-white or partially non-white backgrounds if that makes sense. In a broader sense we could include any ethnic minority group of women. We come from all around the world and all different social backgrounds. Some of us may be very white looking though :)

oh and may as well answer the thread if I'm in it-

I'm Indian (~0.5.) There's some Portuguese in there, but very very very little. I'm also Malaysian Hindu (~0.5.) For those of you unfamiliar with all of that, it pretty much means I'm 100% Indian. haha

OK, PAPER, SERIOUSLY, I'M GOING TO WRITE MY PAPER NOW! BYE!

Didn't want to comment on this thread, and then I saw this. I met bell hooks at her book signing after a lecture in Philly. She was awesome. I had been reading her writings since I was about 14, and when I walked up to her and looked her in the eye, I thanked her and started to cry. She smiled and was really nice about it.

Just wanted to share a nice story about a great writer. ;D

We (WOC) appreciate that!!!
I just wanted to remind folks that sometimes Black isn't just "black". Black can be Liberian, Ethiopian, Guayanese, or Jamaican.
Just as Latina can mean Puerto Rican, Mexican, Colombian, or Panamanian.
White can be Polish, German or Italian.
We are all here for the same reason.
This industry.
Represent and be proud.

Very very very well said, you really hit the nail on the head with the 'like attracts like' comment in particular! ;D While our society has come along way as far as racism is concerned, theres still a lot of discrimination out there. I think in most cases, it's done subconciously, but it's still being done.

Our very mixed race society still leans towards white preferences.... I've done a lot of research and have a lot of opinions on this subject, so I'm just gonna let it all out here. Bear with me!

Not to attack any of you ladies, but for the most part, white girls living in the western world have NO IDEA what it's like to exist in a society that still tends to pick you last based on appearances alone. From the Venus de Milo to the Mona Lisa to Marilyn Monroe to Paris Hilton, theres thousands of years worth of historical data proving what typical beauty standards in the western (aka European and white settled) world are, and many scientific studies have been dedicated to this. Theres an EXCELLENT book on this subject which I highly reccomend; Survival Of The Prettiest: The Science Of Beauty by Nancy Etcoff.

*Gasp* Science has proven that in the western world, people tend to prefer wide set eyes, noses no wider than the space between your eyes, and other such features commonly found in whites, which cause babies to stare longer as they're deemed 'pretty'. And statistics have also shown that mixed race babies are the least likely to get adopted.

Our society has evolved towards embracing more 'ethnic' beauty ideals in the past 20 years - white girls rushing to the tanning beds, more women of color being represented in the media, etc., but we still have a loooong ways to go!!! Sex symbols such as Beyonce, Halle Berry, and Jennifer Lopez, despite their darker skin, have pretty Europeanised features. So how far have we really come when thats the case?

When will a girl with more indigenous Mexican Indian features, or darker black skin and more typical African features be the girl every other girl wants to look like, and every guy wants to fuck? When will girls with Jewish noses be America's Next Top Model, opposed to some novelty hag to poke fun of? When will non-asian men who dig asian chicks simply be known for loving pretty women, opposed to being refered to as fetishists (as if being attracted to asians in abnormal and somehow deviant)? When will Japanese women be revered for their brains or their elegant beauty, opposed to their 'cute' novelty factor? When Madonna plays the slut, shes a sex symobol, but when Lil' Kim does likewise, shes just an aggressive, trashy ghetto bunny. Makes ya think, doesn't it?

Sure, theres tv channels like BET, and magazines which cater to non-white communities. But they lack the cultural influence en masse that much larger media outlets do. Not to be condescending, but I think most whites are oblivious to what a huge factor race still is in our world. It's bad enough that magazines tell us all to have perfect skin, perfect hair, and no cellulite. But for those of us who don't fit the white beauty mold, to be constantly bombarded with such imagery is just another reminder that we still have to work that much harder.

SUCH IMAGERY BEING THE NORM IN OUR WORLD IS THE REASON WOC HAVE A HARDER TIME MAKING MONEY IN THIS BIZ. The beauty spectrum is still fairly narrow, and therefore, conditioning. Men are so used to the Pam Anderson prototype. But a woman whos a dead ringer for young Oprah Winfrey has yet to be successfully marketed to white America as a sex symbol.

It's rather distrubing to know these images/ideals have weaseled their way into non-white societies as well. In Japan, women get eyelid surgery to give their eyes a more European appearance. In India (where paler skin still = privilage), Bollywood actresses are getting more and more westernised in appearance. Meanwhile in America, white women aren't getting plastic surgery to give themselves more 'ethnic' features.

So think about it before you dismiss a rant on racial discrimination as something which can easily be remedied by a change of attitude or move to a different club, etc. etc. It IS a serious issue which is very real, and one our world is still working on. If we truly wish to live in a world free of racism, we must continue to see things differently.

I, btw, am of asian, hispanic, caucasian, and jewish descent. Paler olive skin but with 'ethnic' features. I've been on both sides of the coin, where lighter skin has worked to my advantage, but my features have worked against me in more Barbie type clubs. ;)

Big cheers to those of you who acknowledge that beauty comes in many different forms!
