These are my opinions based on what was in the story link. If others disagee with my point of view, fine by me.

That explains it--the story link is incomplete and selling the usual tripe Newsweek is good at pushing with regards to foreign policy (US = bad). If you actually watch the Getty Images' photographer's short video clip and listen to what happened in his own words--found here (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:OCW%28%27/id/6871483/site/newsweek/%27,%20%27_blank%27,%27width=790,height=530,resiza ble=no,status=no,scrollbars=no,fullscreen=no,locat ion=no,menubar=no,titlebar=no,toolbar=no,%27%29;), since he was actually there, you might come away with an understanding of the event rather than putting forth ridiculous ideas like shooting out tires and casting aspersions on the patrol and its leadership for making a tough call in a tough situation.

C.O -- your link doesn't work- care to repost it or an alternative one-- I am very interested to hear what the photo journalist had to say.

Javascript links don't generally work standalone. This is the actual URL his link takes you to.

(Or you can go to the link you originally posted and scroll a bit more than 1/2 the page, to the sidebar titled "Instantly Orphaned" and click there.)

This incident is exactly why war must ALWAYS be the course of LAST RESORT.

I don't care if a leader leading a country to War thinks he speaks for God, or for his advisors, or for his Mamma. War ALWAYs kills innocents.

That's why I am so sad when people think that a war is a solution, even when it is the only thing that can be done at the time by a particular set of leaders.

Maybe more could have been done to avoid this tragedy.

But with the principle weapon being used against the troops being car bombs, and the tension to be expected in men patrolling a hostile occupied country during curfew, it's really not all that surprising this happened.

There are few people more opposed to this war than myself.

But as a long-time student of military history, I can assure you that in war it is inevitable that tragic loss of innocent life will occur. People make mistakes, both people driving cars trying to mind their own business, and soldiers under duress, trying to stay alive.
