Yeah, that's pretty much the reason, and different people react to sugar differently -- so I thought I'd mention it. I'm one of those where eating cookies sends me through the ROOF, so the amount of sugar it takes to cause me weight problems isn't really that huge.

Having some protein in the diet is important -- enough to allow for muscle building at a normal level. Having a decent amount of lean mass causes the body to drop fat faster. That's why some people work out and work out and never lose a pound -- because they're doing cardio and never weight training, and they're actually dropping muscle mass, which makes the metabolism get sluggish. Similarly with why crash diets actually make things worse. The weight you lose on a crash diet is muscle.

But most protein sources are also high in fat, and a diet full of fat AND carbs is a good way to gain flab.

Just a little trick I pull on my anti-vegetable husband: I chop up things like onions, zuccini, bell pepper, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms or pretty much any kind of veggie so small he can't just pick it out of the food. I like to experiment with meat loaf made w/ extra lean ground trukey, meat balls, spaghetti sauce, stews and soups, lasanga and other baked pasta dishes (use whole grain pasta and low fat cheeses! the olive oil and tomatoes will provide plenty of flavor). Burritos are also great places to sneak in veggies.

This works fabulously w/ kids, too. Another way to get him to chow down on veggies is to make the presentation very colorful. Steamed asparagus is very yummy all on it's own, but if he will give it a try serve it w/ poached salmon and brown rice pilaf w/ hollandaise sauce on the side (in a ramekin). I use intant hollandaise and make it with olive oil to add healthy fats to our diets. I put the food on the plate as if I am making a flower arrangement. Even my 11 year old step son can't resist pouring a little hollandaise sauce on his asparagus and chowing down!

I love to cook and have a myriad of tools to help me do the job. I have two food processors. I recommend that if you are going to start cooking more at home, this is a must have for healthy eating. The food processor makes food prep easy and quick. I have a small one for little jobs and huge one for bigger jobs. They are also dishwasher safe, so even clean up is easy.

Also try renting "Supersize Me" and watching that with him. That should drive the point of poor diet = poor health.

@Paris,
Do you recommend any particular cookbooks?

You’ve got to get him off the sugary drinks. Whether its sugar or sugar free the mere taste of sugar will make him crave it. Make him cut it out altogether and drink teas and water.
I told my man that I thought the sugar free cokes he was drinking wasn’t helping his diet but was making him crave more sugar and making his stomach blow up with gas so after much persuasion he agreed to try not drinking it for a week and his stomach deflated in a week like a balloon. It was unbelievable.
Try it with your man. Give him say 3 days of no sugary drinks and see what happens.

Woe is me ! How funny or not that this thread came along I need to loose a few pounds as well - I dont seem to have the sex problem thinge but it would make lots of things in life easier if I dropped 20lbs . I put on this weight from eating way too fucking much food I discoverd food at about thirty when my body got sick of drugs and alcohol and not getting any sleep . Sad but true this is how I became the size I am - all the while I had a job I worked hard but i played even harder those days are mostly gone ( I still drink ) no drugs .I am now real close to 41 and man is it harder then ever to loose this crap - but the wife and I ( just yesterday ) said we look like shit naked we need to do something and that was it I am doing lots of salads and trying to portion a bit and no snacking . I have an eliptical and a treadmill which my fat ass needs to get back on !! No all the advice was good I just thought I had something to say and that maybe I would get some back-up from others about myself loosing some extra baggage - I guess sometimes people do not understand the fact that men sometimes try to reach out as well to problems that have some simularities - sorry !

I've observed that losing weight means not just dieting for a little while, but changing your habits. Since he isn't exercising, try tasty substitutes for the fatty stuff he eats, and make sure that YOU EAT IT TOO to avoid his desire for the junk food and avoid reminding him that he's overweight. Some suggestions for food (I eat these myself)
granola bars
Peanut butter and honey sandwiches
fruit
dried fruit
deli meats in a sandwich
oatmeal
String cheese!
yogurt
a health drink (Boost or Ensure to save from the embarrassment of Slim-Fast)
Subway sandwiches (like Jared)
lots of milk

This stuff tastes like junk food but is healthier for you. Also, eating smaller meals more often helps. For effective exercises that are low impact ont he joints, go swimming often. Hell go skinny dipping a lot. I bet that'll float his boat!

have you ever heard of the "body for life" fitness program by bill phillps? i have found this program REALLY motivating, and all you need to do is spend $15 on the book which you can pick up in the fitness section of any bookstore. a great aspect of the program is that it encourages couples to embark on weight loss and fitness programs together, and like i said, just reading through the book is one of the greatest fitness motivators i have ever had. whenever i start to get lazy with my running routine or lose steam, i'll pick up the book and it never fails to get me back on top of things. if, with your encouragement and active particpation/partnering in his health, he still doesn't make an effort, i'd say that he doesn't love himself enough for you to love him. it's one thing if he doesn't mind being overweight; but if he does and he never brings himself to do anything about it, i think that's grounds for looking at how much he values himself and how much he values the things that you are telling him are important to you.

understanding and sympathy can only go so far... at some point, we all have to take responsibility to affect positive change in our lives.
