I might try it. I don't take any other antidepressant or anything so hopefully it will be good for me. I've been feeling so damn sluggish lately. It's like I am always tired and feel like a slug.

I don't understand how it can be called an appetite suppressant. 5HTP helps your brain make and absorb more seretonin. Seretonin affects your appetite, but too much seretonin can be an appetite stimulant for many people. Am I missing something here?
In clinical trials, increased activation of post-synaptic serotonin receptors reduces hunger and food consumption, while decreased serotonin receptor activation has the opposite effect.

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5-htp) mentions that 5-HTP has potential in treating obesity, but says nothing further on the topic.

Well its been about 2.5 days and its helped supprese my giant appetite for carbs n things. SAD is said to increase your want for carby things. So this helps me alot so much so.
As far as mood, I feel ok not crappy. I still cry a little bit but its only been 2.5 days anyways. At least Im loosing wieht and starting to get control of all of this.
Thanks for turing me onto this geenidlady. I try to avoid anti depressant drugs from doctors.

Too much serotonin released into your synapses is very very bad. It can result in serotonin syndrome, which can be a very uncomfortable way to die.
Taking 5-HTP by itself, however, should not result in producing too much serotonin. 5-HTP is a raw ingredient your body uses to make serotonin, but your body won't make excessive amounts of serotonin just because it has plenty of the necessary raw ingredients. Absent any other drugs, your body will regulate its own serotonin production to avoid over-production.
You should not take 5-HTP along with SSRIs or other anti-depressants, however. (SSRIs prevent the serotonin released into your synapses from being re-absorbed into your neurons. So your neurons will remain depleted of serotonin even while their post-synaptic receptors are activated, and your brain will keep producing more serotonin as long as it's got the raw materials to do so.)

Ok, so I am on 75mg of Effexor XR and tried to take 5-HTP along with it because I was depressed. I became very agitated and hyper. My appetite also increased. So, now I am just taking the Effexor. I feel fine now especially since Christmas is over. ;D

I'v tried taking it before, i was'nt sure if it was doing what it was supposed to. It gave me a weird buzzy numb feeling in the front of my forhead . Can people be allergic to it? p.s mine are made from Natrol.

but will it carry on its effects into the next day is what im wondering?
how long does it stay in your system does anyone know?
When I used to tak eit, I took it right before bed too. I think I may have taken one in the morning after some caffine and a b cvomplex- so I guess thats why I didn't get tired with them.

Hey-- any updates from people who've taken 5-HTP? I just started today and was taking it because I'd get stressed out, or bored with my current situation and wouldn't want to do anything but go take a nap. I haven't taken a nap today, but was wondering-- is more than 1 100mg pill a day dangerous? I was thinking about doing one when I wake up, and then one around dinner time. In a way, I'm hoping to use it as an energy pill, but not to create energy so much as not to succumb to the bored doldrums. I've got the GNC brand.
