I worked at a club that did a "review", very similar to what Rbcaul described, ten minutes before the end of happy hour. As a marketing tool, it worked brilliantly. We were on a very competitive club strip, and the dollar dances got to be known around town. Guys (and gals) started showing up right after work for our happy hour and were sure to stay until the dollar dance. By that time, many were lubricated enough to decide to remain into the night and spend some real money on our dancers (which made my tips better). IMHO, I'd have to say that the usefulness of dd's depend on the club's situation.

We do dollar dances only during our bikini (amatuer) contest - Wednesday nights. I don't know, when I first started I didn't mind doing them. But now I feel like oh well who cares. I don't particularly like it, I usually get called out too.
See the dances last like 20-30 seconds, and there's about 15 "songs" in a row, so there's about 10 minutes or so of dollar dancing per week. Anyways the dj always is like " THere's Jillian, she's lookin for a dollar dance guys, c'mon who's got a dollar for her, she's lookin hot!?" He does it to everyone who isn't in VIP and isn't dancing for a buck, but it seems that he calls my name most often because I try my hardest to hide from them. Oopsy...umm is that some sort of advertising?

Ha, we had $1 again last night. As soon as I heard the DJ say, "alright I'm gonna need all you men to turn your chairs away from the stage....." I booked the hell outta there!
Jillian, you're right, it is sort of an advertisement BUT I also feel like it cheapens you as a dancer.

i feel sorry for you guys. in canada we have no dollar bill. the lowest currency on paper is a five. and to top it off, if you get the right club they will not have to degrade you. sorry but U pay THEM to work. the day a club hands me a hundred buck, MAYBE i would concider it. I am not a slave.

$1 are a cheapening idea. We already have to deal with a#%holes that degrade us..and that is hard enough...allowing guys to get away with only spending a dollar might be great in the customers' and the clubs' minds...but not in the dancers' minds....So many clubs cater to themselves and the customers...they are caring less and less about the entertainers- and in essence without the entertainers are are no lapdances and there are no stipclubs-

Sorry guys..I made so many mistakes on my post..I just woke up...go figure--I meant to say "$1 dances" and "without the entertainers there are no" I'll try to wake up a little more before posting again....

And you know the sad part is, while the girls are walking around giving $1, I walk the floor asking for $20 dances. Sometimes I'm lucky, but not always. While I walk through I always have men whistling at me to come here, while waving a dollar in the air. ::) Sometimes I just smile, walk over and ask for a $20 dance. They are like, "no, I got a $1 though" and then I just smile again, bend down to eyelevel and say, "Sweety, does it look like my face or body is worth a dollar to look at? I don't give $1 dances, I'm sorry"
For some men, they think i'm stuck up, but for the high spenders who come in there, they respect it, and understand that I'm not trying to cheapen myself.

I hear you girl.....You sound alot like me....Some people think I'm stuck up because I don't dance long for $1-2 tips...At one point I had a rep on an unmentionable website(not sw) of not dancing for some customer's measly couple dollar tip...He threw a fit, disrespected me, and I had him thrown off the website...He also insulted another dancer at my same club...
On a normal basis I thank customers for $1 tips especially if they are simply kind regulars of the bar..But if they think I "owe them something for a dollar" that puts me in a whole different mode--on the defense..and I will either ignore their condescending comment and thank them for their dollar and walk off or else I'll fire a few words back..I'm awfully witty..And if they want to come at me in a disrespectful way they might just hear something they didn't expect.
I'm all about greeting all customers as soon as I enter my club-bullshiting around, teasing, just simply cheering them up...making their day..That is what makes me one of the top dancers..but I do not tolerate a customer who is out of line...Oopps I fell way off the original topic...

Yup... we have them too... except we do them everynight, sometimes every hour... they totally SUCK! I find myself exhausted after doing dollar dances and then pissed because I've only made around $8. What's worse is that if you don't participate you get fined. We also do the 2 for 1 dances, which as mentioned above, guys just wait around for instead of buy dances at a regular price.

I dispiss $1 dances!! My club does $5 preview private dances like once a night during the week and then 2x on fri and sat nites. Its 2-3 songs, up to girl how long she stays with each customer, how much she takes off (other then thong) and what she does. Then normally we do a 2-4-1 right after the $5 dances. I dont mind doing all that too much. Cause thats an easy $60-100 or more normally dependin on how busy the club is when they do it.

Dollar dances in Australia would be HILARIOUS. We only have $1 coins.

Along a similar vein I've had customers try to make me beg for the UK equivalent of roughly $1, or less! As I do jug collections often they insist on feeling, seeing or licking certain parts of my anatomy. I won't even smile for $1, I don't know what possesses people.

At my club we do 2for1's, which I don't mind since I usually always get the guy to pay for his "free" dance and then some. We also every once in awhile if it's really slow do 3 and even 4 for 1 dances. But it's all a mind game. The 3 and 4 for 1 dances are the exact same amount of time as the 2 for 1's. Each girls stage show is 2 songs, so when a girl has to go on stage for the 3/4 for 1, she dances to 3 or 4 very short songs instead of 2 regular ones. It's funny because usually the customers are so happy that they're getting such a "deal" they break you off pretty well. Talk about a hustle, ha.

The smallest note in Australia is a $5, so the cheapest dance anyone can get is a $5 dance, which I've heard of being done for 30 seconds. THAT'S worth it. But what I hate is my club actually made a $2 note in funny money. So now customers can be cheapasses and tip $2 if they want to. Which the club takes half and taxes so we only get .90! Most customers tip $5, however. Only the cheap ones tip the $2. One guy tipped me $1.20...wtf.... but it makes up for it when I get $235 tips. :D

I can see why some of you dancers don't like it. But I'm sure it's done for the reasons of; Making the customers enthusiastic so they will take the money out of their pockets, laughing it up, in general getting the whole club up and lively.

Sigh.
Ok. Cinnamon; having been at a club that has always done this; always sold merchandise with 2for 1's and used to do a SERIOUS uptime/Showtime where we had to go to the back and put on our $400 sequined dresses; I understand where you are coming from. Also; after having observed my club for 12 years;as well as others in the area (strip or not); it is actually one of our better selling points. HOWEVER; this depends on a few very IMPORTANT factors:
1) THE DJ SHOULD NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER RUN THE SONG LONGER THAN 20-25 SECONDS. HE HURTS HIS OWN MONEY IF HE DOES SO=HE'S A DUMBASS.
2)THE DJ AND MANAGEMENT SHOULD NEVER MAKE THIS A REGULAR THING. It should be for emergency use; like last Sat. night when the almost-full crowd here was just sitting on their asses. It got the room going and I made bit of money to get me started. (I don't make alot because I refuse to compromise my standards and show off my ass for free in booty shorts or those damn skirts that are a strip of fabric).
Sure; I'm worth more than a dollar..but when the blue collar and lower-paid white collar workers that are our regulars and our backbone see that I'm not too stuck up to have a good time with it; they end up being glad to see me when I come back around and ask for a dance or two---which I did do later and did succeed in getting. THIS IS NOT a slam on your style; it works here because of the area of the country and size & economy of our city. Bigger clubs in bigger cities with alot of NON-regular biz or turnover should not NEED to run these and I do think it creates an air of cheapness if it is used alot. I cannot stress this point enough--it should only be used in EXTREME cases of crowd lag. Now; onto my most important point:
THIS IS THE OWNERS --->MANAGERS--->DJS RESPONSIBILITY. If the greedy nearsighted obviously-dosen't-know-how-to-run-his-business owner can't get a QUALIFIED EXPERIENCED manager who will hire or train WELL a competend FAIRLY INTELLIGENT Dj; they will never get the subtle intracacies of this job it takes to make money. NOTHING in this job is cut and dried; black and white. It is SO SO SO much more complicated than that.
That being said; again; I understand why you feel that way; but look at it from a business perspective. The concept itself is not the problem. Used judiciously and intelligently it only makes you and the club more money. The idiots trying to use it without understanding it are the ones with the problem. I am sorry that you have to put up with the hassle of dealing with them. Just for future reference; though.....eventually they will reap what they sow. The rules of customer service never change; and you DO have to TRAIN your customer base. People LIKE rules and boundaries. (Damn Puritan forefathers).
I see too clearly sometimes....sorry for the rant. Best of luck.

Exactly, I TOTALLY feel that. But it becomes a problem when the weekend crowd of 18-25yr olds come in in groups, don't buy dances and wait patiently for a $1 dance :O We offer 2-4-1's a few times during the night, or 3 for $30, and people are so used to having this now. It's not a reward for them, they EXPECT it, and that is the problem.
If it's someones b-day, we let them get on stage and all the dancers dance for him. Nothing special a lil 5-10second boob dance for the custy. I had to break it down to the DJ once that we should not be accomodating to folk who don't pay us! There would be people who would pay admission, then immediately walk to the DJ booth, (ID in hand) and say, "hey it's my b-day, can I go up) So now at least the DJ (mostly, not all of them) tells them he has to buy some dances first, then he will accomodate them.
OK, back to $1 dances: The other problem I have with $1 dances is that customers become selective on who they get a dance from :O Are you F'ing s_____ me?! >:( I've seen it happen on more than one occasion. A girl will walk up to get the dollar and start dancing, and the customer will say, "nah I dont' want a dance from you" That is ridiculous!
I think when a club has something to structured (ie. special dance price @ midnight, or 2-4-1's at some point during the night) customers grow to expect it, and wait, and wait and wait. It sucks for the dancers.

At my club there are regular 2-for-1's and what we call a dirty 30, or 3 dances for $30 (normal dances are $20/song). So the guy gets 1/2 off. These specials are about twice per hour or more.
Back in the VIP is where we can do OPTIONAL dollar dances for 10-15 seconds, but sometimes the guys will pay $5/10 second dance, or even toss a $20. I find that those dollar dances work, b/c I normally end up selling at least one normal couch dance when I am back there.
And the 3-for-30 works well too b/c the songs are shortened from their normal length, lol.
But I would not do it otherwise-and I would never sell a full dance for a dollar, b/c my club takes $5/normal $20 dance! That wouldnt even cover the club dance fee! Screw that business
