^^^There have been editorials and theses written on Spielberg's E.T. masterpiece. It's a movie for all ages with it's romantic charm and magic, but I find it mostly fascinating because of it's political and ethical theory.

Yes, I agree Birth of a Nation should be seen. It is an acurate representation of the prejudices that existed in society then and were reinforced through the media. I first saw it in my history of Media class.
El Norte- this shows why so many immigrants try to come to America and the lengths they will go to get hear and reach their goals. everytime I see this movie I think of my Abuelita.
Raise the Red Lantern- Shows the concubinage of women in early 1900's China.
My Life without Me- A young mother who is dying writes a list and completes it before her death
Whale Rider- female gaining access to traditionally male chief training in her tribe.
Black Robe- about the Jesuits trying to reform tribes in the North east in the early 1700's. My favorite scene in the movie is two Native American parents argueing about who their daughter is most like the mother or the father.
Lovejones- I do not usually like love movies this one is great.
I Like It Like That(indy version)- is about a Puerta Rican Mami who's husband goes to jail and she has to learn to support herself and the family. By the time her husband gets out she has grown up and is a full person.

Well, I struggled with the thread title, because I don't think of a movie as something I need to see.

Other than that, what TOO said (with some natural exceptions, since we're different humans), especially about LA Confidential if you need gripping drama, seamless writing, and fine acting, and Rear Window, if you need to see flawless beauty and quiet sex appeal, wrapped up in a good story.

I would just add, if you need to see science fiction, Aliens, ET, The Incredible Shrinking Man.
If you need cultural icons, Star Wars or Citizan Kane.
If you need a definitive war movie, Saving Private Ryan.
If you need a musical, Singin' in the Rain or the Howard Ashman Disney toons.
If you need a movie like no other, Fantasia or Memento.
