I got the impression they weren't working for an agency, would could explain the lack of security. They were probably figuring they could look out for each toher, but there were way too many guys for that (which they weren't expecting) plus they apparently didn't stick together.
The fact that they stayed under these circumstances points to either naivette or financial desparation. I'd guess the latter.
The rape seems to have occurred after they stripping portion of the party was over, so likely a lot of potential witnesses had left the area. Also, they apparently pulled her into a bathroom. it's quite possible most of the people there din't know.
The 1 in 6 statistic is based on a definition of rape that's so broad as to be meaningless and I'm normally suspicious of rape claims, but the evidence seems to be pretty solid here. The account does make it pretty clear this in particular was racilly motivated and even if it weren't, it would still be a racial issue because of public perception.
Also, I don't see how DNA tests of all persons matching the perpetrator's description are unreasonable search and seisure. If they had tried testing all the white male students, or all the white males who lived in the area, that would be different, but I think this is probable cause.
The DA seems to be taking this seriously, which is a good sign something will be done. I'm hoping those DNA tests give them something to go off of.
