If it was as hard a class as this and if there was perhaps more at stake, I'd consider it.
Well I guess you have answered your own question! {Maybe this girl felt it was a very hard class and had too much to lose if she did not pass - hence cheating}

I'm glad you told on her- I wouldn't have had the guts to, but I would've been just as mad. Cheating is not fair- it affects you and all future students.
Fuck, I'm mad just thinking about it. My finals are coming up, and if I catch anyone cheating I'm gonna open a can of Tiff-style whoop-ass.

Not at all a bitch.
You did the right thing. Just because cheating is "something everyone does" is not an excuse for you to turn a blind eye. Especially in an environment where you could lose out.
One of my friends programmed their calculator with a bunch of stuff they shouldn't have for one of our SAT IIs a few years ago. I let the proctor know but luckily I got to do it when no one else was around. Do I feel bad about it? Absolutely not. I had told her it was a bad idea but she was taking an exam that she had no hope of doing well on. But she was too much of a brat to step down and take the easier math section.
Fuck 'em.

I probably wouldn't have had the balls to tell, but I would have wanted too! I've never cheated on a test (well, I did in high school, but never in college) because, once again... I have no balls. Lol, it's stupid, too. Not worth the risk. It's her own fault... She took the risk and got fucked. Not your problem. I just hope she doesn't give you issues if you have a class with her next semester?

as to jenny as far as the mafia comment... i didn't at all say anything about a mob coming to get tiff.. i meant if the girl was pist enough about her telling, tiff could possibly be in danger... especially if she had specific plans to graduate on time or if she had to get a decent grade in her class in order to pass... thats all..

It was the right thing to do, so no, you were not being a bitch. Cheaters need to realize that there are consequences for cutting corners in life. If we could all get away with cheating then we would become a corrupt nation of cheats and liars. What ever happened to personal/professional/academic integrity?

1) No, you're not a "bitch" for wielding your right to reinforce proper classroom behavior and policing cheating by a class mate.
but also..
2) You're being a bit silly by getting any level of disgruntled by the incident since classes/colleges are all about learning content. Hell, you're PAYING to learn content. Someone cheating is simply cheating themselves and no one else, as well as robbing themselves. Not smart by any stretch of the imagination.
You have to understand, being in the career world for the 20 years, I can tell you that the "piece of paper" really only gets people's feet in the door. Those that slacked, cheated or otherwise didn't yield the knowledge they PAID for in college/schooling stay stuck.. don't progress.. miss promotions, or worst case- wind up fired or the first on the lay-off list.
Your hard work, determination and desire to actually GET what you're there for... that has rewards 100x greater and that other classmate is really the idiot. lol.

I totally agree that you get out what you put in to college, but what about the situations where you need to get ahead?
My architecture college admits 250 for year one. Cuts that to 55 for year two. If someone is cheating and therefore getting better grades/recognition than me, that is most definitely something that needs to be outted.

I would actually say that is a problem with your program. I mean, this is a single program for which they accept people into first year and take their money, knowing perfectly well they won't take them in second? THAT is really unethical. I really don't think they have any moral authority over cheaters.

Way back in the last century, I did the same thing during high school.
A history exam (and not an easy one, even by my standards) was given by a substitute teacher; out of 30 people, only five of us--seated at the same table--were not cheating. I did fine on the exam, but the two girls next to me did poorly vis a vis the cheating students and the teacher gave one fo the girls a talking to and threatened to have her bumped down to the lower-level class as a result. I couldn't let that go, so I told the teacher after class what actually transpired that day in the class. A different exam was retaken by everyone two days later, with no notice. The scoring of the exam was much different that time around.
:)
I didn't think twice about doing that and you shouldn't either, Tiff; living in a principled fashion is a rare thing.

2. There's nothing necessarily wrong with that. Sometimes being a bitch is exactly what the situation calls for. The other girls has no right to complain.

Bravo, you did the right thing, Tiff. Theres a guy in one of my classes who ALWAYS sits next to me on test day because I'm a big ole smarty pants in the class and I get pissed and always try and shield my paper because on the first two tests I could 'feel' him looking over but it is so hard to keep the answers hidden (multiple page, multiple choice and fill in). I think he has gotten the point when I started working on my tests from middle to back to front and all over the place. I guess that is my own passive aggressive way of dealing with things. I only wish I had the courage to out people who I know are obviouly trying to get over on people and see no shame in it!

WHOA fellow posters, I have a late-breaking newsflash for everyone: Liyah thinks i'm a bitch! <-- I know, up until this point I had no idea. I just wanted to make this post to make sure that ABSOLUTELY EVERYBODY on SW that didn't know already knew that this girl thinks i'm a bitch.
Alright! Last chance...Its the final time i'm going to clarify that Liyah thinks i'm a bitch. <--I know that its a bit confusing since she's only mentioned it a *few* times on this thread...its a bit hard to grasp, I know I struggled with it.
Anyways, if anyone has anymore questions on the matter AT ALL they can feel free to PM either Liyah or I. But it would make more sense to PM liyah probably since she thinks i'm...i'm a....what was it again? OH RIGHT, A bitch. <---Almost forgot, myself! That was close! :)

Well.
Back in the days, some guys in my dorm in my same geology class snagged a key to the office, made a duplicate, sneaked in at night, copied the test, showed up at my room, and said here's the test. I told them to take a hike and did not turn them in.
If I were in Tiff's place, I would probably not turn the cheater in, but I'd hope that someone would, being the rather passive/serene/ball-less guy that I am. So Tiff gets a cheer from my college alter ego for doing what I wouldn't.
"Cheating is wrong, but snitching is worse." There is something really wrong with that. The cheater hurts everything. Snitching on the cheater hurts the person who is doing wrong.
My impression is that the fairly clear majority says "Tiff's OK" for it. There you go for affirmation.

Here's an interesting tidbit for you: My dad went to university with a guy who was in Engineering, and he cheated his way throughout his entire schooling and never got caught. He's now an engineer and doesn't know his shit, designing bridges and buildings and "ensuring that they are safe for the rest of us". <-- Do you really want people like that running the world?
Ummmm...Isn't the president of the United Sates kind of like that guy?? Just a thought.

Jessica was saying that we would ALL be corrupt. Turning a blind eye to cheating, IMO, is condoning it. And not everyone, to my knowledge, is corrupt.
Yes, exactly. When we make excuses for cheaters on a minor level (high school/college exams, etc.) then we are only paving the way for a future generation of citizens without integrity. This can be seen across the board in our gov't, corporations, and churches. But this behavior started somewhere, and my guess is that it happens all the time when students get away with cheating on tests. We have no right to complain about corrupt people in power if we are unwilling to take a stand against this kind of behavior when it starts. Sure, it's easier at the time to look away and say nothing, but I'm glad some people are still doing the right thing.

We obviouisly have two completely different mindsets here, not many "don't cares". We have people who are concerned with good social ethics. And then we have people who are only concerned with themselves and their needs.
Who would have thought......?

I still think you're missing the most important part of all of this, Tiff..
thought about how much I studied and how hard I worked in class (plus this morning I was completely sleep deprived) and I couldn't handle it.
It was absolutely your call and right to bust the individual cheating. It's simply enforcing the "no notes/no formula" rules of the test that the instructor declared, and was unable to enforce him or herself.
The more important thing you are not realizing though is your reaction to this situation is still a bit... well, silly... and fails to recognize the truly important things that put you lightyears over this individual trying to 'coast' her way through this test/class:
You put aside laziness and studied hard.. worked hard to actually LEARN the content, and be tested fairly on that content. That shows earnest drive towards doing the work, determination and a conscious understanding of the things that get us places in this world.. it's an absolute fact. This is a success-minded attitude that SHOULD recognize all this and be unbothered by those that aren't SMART enough to realize this. Let them get away with it? No, it's the proper thing since being busted might actually help them get off their cans and switch over to being worth more than a waste of oxygen someday.. but not our business otherwise.
People with the inherent nature to cheat, take the easy street, defy rules, lie, and cheat themselves of knowledge wind up, in the end, with little rewards in life. What few ill-gotten rewards they may receive really don't amount to crap at the end of the day and are very temporary.. they miss out on the confidence, real rewards and success a hard-work, can-do, achievement mindset experiences everyday.
Good job Tiff.. you're going places if you keep up the work, good can-do attitutde and keep doing the right thing. Tragic for that other gal though- her mindset can only wind her up in a trailer park or madly fumbling from job to job, hoping she can do "extra credit" to make up for her otherwise lack of character lol.

Well. Now all my posturing is coming back to bite me in the ass. There are a lot of rumors already that a whole lot of people cheated on a recent exam. It was largely an "honour system" thing, so really, the professor should have known better. Although, in some ways, bless her for thinking so darn well of us. We grade on a heavy, heavy curve. (Although they don't all call it a curve, because there is no required grade distribution. Just a required average. If that sounds stupid to you, think about how I felt when I found out about that distinction two weeks AFTER they specifically told me they DIDN'T grade on a curve.)
Eeh. I'm really not sure if I should do anything, or just count on the fact that someone else almost certainly will. Especially since all I have were rumours. But odds are, 3 hours after the exam she had 10 000 emails detailing these same rumours. Does she need mine too?
