that sounds incredibly scary....hope everything turns out alright. I cannot believe they wouldn't treat you even though this is potentially life threatening....

*sniff* I just checked it... the wound is turning black and it's not calming down. Some of the edges are past the circle...

Try the vitamin C mega doses and Colloidal Silver - and the garlic is definatly going to help too. Get a spray bottle and spray the silver on regularly throughout the day and drink some. At the end of the day I wouldn't be worrying about the minute risk of having blue skin freom Colloidal Silver when my flesh is turning black and rotting away anyway. (You're not going to turn blue anyway from a small amount of ingestion!) The Colloidal Silver wont interact with the antibiotics so no problem there.

Damn, this is terrible you are having so much trouble with the hospitals--at least you got into one today.

So you are a US citizen staying in Australia? Can you get a flight back here if the hospitals are better here? Sounds like it'd be worth it to do so.

You have a great attitude about all this, I could tell especially from your first posts. Hang in there, we are all thinking of you and sending good healing vibes your way!

I don't believe in a God, or prayer, but I sure do believe in the power of the mind--this can beat almost any disease even if doctors are scaring you. I hope knowing we are with you now can help you do so.

Take care, Lilithmorrigan, and please let us know how you are doing!

I'm inclined to agree with AussiePunkShocker at this point: try ANYTHING you can.

Think good thoughts at the antibiotics, focus on them in your system, visualize amplifying their effect . . .

P.S. I just sent you a serious Reiki healing.

P.P.S. This is very scary to even think about (as is this whole thing, and I seriously admire your strength!) but I know they can sometimes amputate in severe cases . . . and while that's awful, it's a heck of a lot better than dying. :'(

Heya, this is RIUM+ or otherwise known as Michael (Morrigan's boyfriend) posting an update for her.

She's currently staying overnight in the hospital. They've given her some more injections of antibiotics and painkillers. And the doctor said it was bad for her to squeeze the pus out of it (it can make it worse), use a hot-pack on it (cold is good; hot will apparently make it WORSE) and to poke it with an unsterilized needle herself (which I said for her to not do, but you know how she is - once she has her mind set on something... ;P ). It was REALLY hurting her, but since they've given her some more treatment the pain has temporarily subsided.

So, it hopefully should be okay, but it's still not certain. Keep any good vibes coming. And if you feel the need to pray to some higher, lower, equal, sideways, orthogonal, perpendicular, hydroscopic, inanimate, animate, foreign, opposite, applicable or flying-pasta-and-meatball diety, you can keep that going. I'll make another post (or she'll make another post herself) in the morning, in 11-12 hours or so.

Penicillin is a prescription med in the U.S., too. All antibiotics are. And they should be.

I always heard that the flesh-eating bacteria had no cure. I really hope that's not what you have. I read recently that it has a 100% mortality rate because it's resistant to all known antibiotics.

It's got a 30% mortality rate. If it's caught and dealt with in time, the person can usually recover successfully.

I had a friend who had gotten FED a long time ago (gosh, like 13 years ago...god I feel old). He had a cut, went tubing down the river and the next morning awoke with a fever and extreme pain in his thigh. His doc diagnosed it immediately and it was taken care of.

Scary, scary stuff.

I'm back from the hospital. My wound exploded while I was there and black brown and red puss oozed from it for like 30 minutes! :( It was soooo much. But the hardness went way down and half an hour later it wasn't as red... so here's hopin'.

What did the doc's say? Is it OK for you to be home now? Is the worst over?

I'm home now and the worst is only over when it goes away as it can get reinfected. I'm on the top TWO antibiotics now and I was shot with over 10 grams of penicillin straight into my wound. My wound has broken but there are a few more surface-wounds but much less subsurface tension. :/ It seems better. I think the infection is breaking through the skin now.

You can catch it ANY way. It can literally JUST APPEAR OUT OF NOWHERE but most commonly with broken skin. TREAT ALL BROKEN SKIN. I got mine from a MOSQUITO! :(

Well I hope it's getting better. Did they say for sure what it is? My mom has cellulitis and from what she says it flares up and then she has to see the doctor when it does.

Oh gods . . . I've been SO anxious for you all day. You're one of my favorite people on here, Lilith. *HUGS* I am so glad it seems to be getting better. Thank all the powers that be. Keep thinking positive. You probably will already go to the hospital at any sign of change for the worse, so I don't need to tell you that. More Reiki is coming your way tonight, when I have the chance.

Yekhefah:
Wikipedia says 20% mortality rate. And as for the US, at least emergency rooms here are SUPPOSED to treat anyone who comes in -- although the costs, billed later, can put you in hock for the rest of your life.

There are starting to be nurse practitioners in drugstores charging $50 a visit or so, offering simple dignosis/prescription to people who don't have insurance, so that you can get fast non-emergency health care without paying exorbitant rates. Like if you have an earache or a bladder infection, something that needs prescription treatment but isn't really complicated.

I'm so glad I was wrong, and that you're getting better. Take care of yourself please.

And thank your lucky stars you're in Australia. If you'd been in the States when it happened, you'd have wound up with a rushed asshole doctor who probably wouldn't have seen you in time, and gotten substandard care and be billed for it for the rest of your life. So there's your silver lining.

I hope things are going well, lilithmorrigan.

There are a number of new drugs available that may work better than the standards (vancomycin, cefazolin, or semi-synthetic penicillins such as nafcillin, oxacillin, cloxacillin, flucloxacillin). If things aren't going too well, you may want to ask about the following new drugs:

daptomycin (Cubicin)
quinupristin-dalfopristin (Synercid)
linezolid (Zyvox)
tigecycline (Tygacil)

Unfortunately, they're all quite expensive (e.g. several hundred US$ per day of treatment).

(Disclaimer: I work in drug & vaccine development in the infectious diseases field, but I have not worked on any of these drugs.)

UPDATE:

I am currently on 2 forms of antibiotic (and thanks to that, another form of birth control!) and have been slowly healing. My wound has exploded twice since the first time and has gotten better significantly after each time. It was about the size of my hand spread out at it's worst and is now about the size of a small fist.

I have decided to dress it neatly and go to work tonight instead of waiting until the 1st like the doctor told me. If a customer asks, I'll say I have a bad bruise or something. >_>

It's not contageous.

PS: Everyone thank zoe_en_australia for sacving my life. :) Send her a thankyou PM for me!!! :3

Ummm...if it's oozing, it sure is contagious!! The doctor told you to wait for a reason. I would suggest you follow that. Not only that, but you need to get some rest. Wearing yourself out while your body is trying to fight off a major, massive infection is not going to help you recover well.

I'm glad you're feeling better, but don't be foolish and go back to work. For one, if I was working with you and found out you had an oozing FEB wound, I would be highly pissed. That's just gross...and endangering other people's lives.

Yeah, What she said....... ^^^^ I second everything she just said. don't be foolish. No one knows me here, but i'v been following this thred for days. you poor girl. please dont try to bounce back to fast. for the sake of your body, and people at work. i work medical, and this is highly contagious!! we take extra precousions, i.e. gloves and such before entering a patients room, with what you'v got..... placing all used lenins into a bio hazard bag. until it is fully cleared up. and dr. give word. just be a house wife, and spoil your boyfriend, until the doctor, looks at it in the follow up visit.

Agreed ^^^^ I know you want to get back to work because you probably feel behind, but it's best for you to follow Dr's orders. Considering how serious your infection is, it's better for you and those you work with. Take care of yourself girlie. I'm so glad you're feeling better.

So lilth how has work been?

Clara_M

I just saw this thread now.

Flesh-eating disease can be *very* bad. Stay home for a few more days, the exertion of being at work could be enough to let it get the upper end. You've probably had bad flus (for example) and noticed that exertion makes the disease much "stronger" for a bit. I'd tend to think that this is no different. Be gentle with yourself, you can easily die from this. I think it's safe to say we're all very worried about you.

I'm also completely aghast at the reception you got from the hospitals. It's totally uncivilised. I'm hard-pressed to believe it's not even illegal to turn away a person in need of emergency care. For all the bad things said about the U.S., I don't think most hospitals there would have the nerve to do that. My dad once got a bad infection in his thumb (nothing as extreme as what you've been through, just a run-of-the-mill infection) while visiting Connecticut (he's Canadian), went to the hospital, was immediately treated, and labelled as a "charity" case (along with most of his fellow patients), notwithstanding the fact that he even had insurance. He actually felt that he got better treatment as a "charity" case than he would have gotten back home: they were worried enough about him to ask him to come back the next day for a checkup, etc.

Clara - this was in Australia, not the US.

And I did go back to work. My infection was no longer contagious at this point...but it had began hurting and I had to go home early two nights. I've made pretty good money and not one person has even asked about the bandaid (covering a 6" black mark of dead tissue and skin. :()... and I'm on the heal.
