Yeah I'm in Coorparoo. it's a suburb and the market closed at THREE PM yesterday (all wednesdays)... I'm seriously in outback hell. :P I need to move into the city!! And of course most cities don't have farmers markets! Damnit. I'm going to find one nearby. I don't have a car. Oh! Need to send you my postal.

I remember the first time we visited Australia (Penrith NSW).... everything rolled up at 4:30 and the weekends were hell. It was hard to even find a convience store open. Melboune was much nicer, but still everything is early, execpt for Thrusday and Friday. Vic market does not keep the best hours, but it is downtown. There are also the Box Hill Markets, Footscray, Fitzroy, and South Melbourne. Well there is more than that. North Melbounre is great for seafood if you hit it before 11am.
They had much better meat pies back then though. Homemade pub pies... damm I still want one.
Liquid smoke is on the way!

Sweet. I finished my bacon last night. Need to buy more. Need to buy more everything. I threw the last of all the vegetables except one tomato and three carrots into a pot last night. I WANTED to make cabbage soup but the market was CLOSED. Fercrissakes. :( I can't believe the MALL closes at 5. WTF?! MALL. HELLO. MALL!
There's a place between Brisbane and Sunshine coast that's known for having the best pies in Australia.
I have yet to have one.
Fuck, I love meat pies though.

I can't imagine gumbo without okra. I'm sure you can find it somewhere, though it won't be at Woolie's. Try the Farmer's Market again, or the internet (frozen or canned okra would be okay to import). It's too late at night to call my mother - it's almost midnight CDT - but I'll call her tomorrow and send you the recipe tomorrow evening.

Thank you. I'd like some real gumbo. I was sad about the okra too. I got a lot of, "Okra? You mean Oprah? She's on TV." Um.... yeah. I am ordering OPRAH at the market. I shop at Coles normally, since it's down the street. I need to toddle to a decent store anyway to get me food.
Money. Pft.

Nothing more american than Tex-Mex, lol! Make some enchiladas with yellow cheese!
Lysondra
08-16-2006, 10:00 PM
^Oh don't even get me started on enchiladas.
I have ONE, count 'em ONE can of enchilada sauce in my cupboard for a special occasion - my mum smuggled it in from the US. Try finding yellow cheese here! It's called 'tasty cheese' and I don't know what the fuck kind of cheese it is!! Mexican restaurants make Enchiladas with tomato sauce - as in, Aussie KETCHUP! -.- And then, for salsa, they mix bellpeppers (called capsicum) and tomatoes. My enchilada I bought once was made with PARMESAN and MOZZERELLA. Da funk?!
-.-
Nope, my can of sauce is for me only. >_>

Ummm tasty..... Man I miss that orange American cheese and Monterey jack, and pepper jack, and extra sharp Vermont cheddar.
I can find the old el passo stuff here.
LM do you need some southwest/tex mex recipes I have one for Pancho Villa’s Mexican Army Hot Sauce. Most of the ingredients can be found here, it is just a matter of spending the time to make it from sctrach.
The Blue Cheese, Brie, Camembert and other soft cheeses are supposed to be good here. That is if you’re into them.

If I could fucking find Green Cheese here, I'd be in heaven. I absolutely love green cheese and can't find it. My boyfriend says he's seen it before. You know if they have it?
Tasty cheese is... tasy cheese. I asked for months what the hell it was... and it was really funny going to American sites saying, 'What's tasty cheese?' and people going, "Well I think Brie is tasty!" XD
Really? Mexican recipes?! I'm half Mexican and the lack of food is killing me. I made mexican pork chops the other night. Slathered in jalepenos and juices with kidney beans, corn and rice. Sortof but not quite.
Yum.

That's a good point, do Aussies dig peanut butter n' jelly sammiches? I know my Scottish friend thinks it's disgusting, and there's "something wrong with us" Americans. WTFever. PB&J is what's up. (Oh, and those muffeletta things from NOLA? I HATE olives, and they are amazing.)

Hominy is not the same as grits. They both come from corn, but definitely not the same. Hominy is basically swollen corn, whereas grits are all gritted up into tiny pieces. God I love me some hominy!!! That is a southern thing all the way ;D
OMG I would DIE if I had to eat that sorry excuse for mexican you described!! :yuck:
Soo, I'm curious. What is considered Aussie food? And is it good?
Lysondra
08-17-2006, 03:27 AM
The reason they think it's gross is becuse Jelly in other countries is American Jell-o. Other countries think we are having Gelatin sandwiches!

That and a lot of Australians seem to be allergic to peanuts.
I love Philly Cheese Steaks.... so much so I even use (unmarinated) Korean bulgogi meat to make them... close but not perfect.
Steak for breakfast, now there is an American and possibly Southern concept if I ever saw one.
Chicken Fried Steak, also same origin. Actually it is not too far off from schnitzel depending on who does it.
Aussie food:
Meat Pies and VB! lol. My meat pie recipe has VB in the cooking process. I actually don't drink beer....
Roast Lamb, with rosemary and slivers of garlic. Served with mint sauce. Well this is kind of Kiwi (NZ) as well.
Souvlaki is Greek but Aussies have adopted it. They have also adopted kebabs as well.
Did I mention there are about 20 different types of meat pies?
Oh and sausage rolls, loose sausage in a filo pastry, rolled up like a hot dog.
There must be more…. I expect most of the Aussies to be at work now….
Chicken Flavoured Potato Chips.
Red Rooser... a roast chicken fast food chain. Lose control, so varies from excellent to crap.

I love Stuffed Green Peppers, Black Eyed Peas, Candied Yams, Collared Greens, and Fried Catfish. Very good and very southern, but I doubt you could even find them in Australia.

A little off topic but anyways...
...most Australian barbequing is done on a solid flat griddle....the notion that Australia does great BBQ is wrong... I should know. I lived there for over 25 years! Give them some southern BBQ :) or any US barbeque for that matter.
Nouveau Fusion food in Australia is awesome.....and we have better produce than the US (less chemicals anyway).... Visit Sydney(best) and Melbourne...you really are missing out in Qld!....most home cooked Aussie food sucks though...and that's all Qld really offers.
I so miss being able to buy great, affordable sushi as you can in Aus....It's over 2 euros per piece here!

My favorite Australian food was chicken sausages, grilled and served on a bun with a mixture of grilled onions and grilled pineapple. You cook it all up on the beach and wash it down with Toohey's New. Good stuff.
Actually, you've inspired me, Morrigan... I'm thinking that I'll throw a soul-food party sometime soon! Turnip greens, fried hotwater cornbread, fried pickles, corn casserole, BBQ, coleslaw... good times. I do get homesick for good food.
Lysondra

*sigh* What I'd do for collard greens.

When I lived in Australia, my parents came to visit and brought me 12 cans of turnip greens. Ordinarily I would never eat the canned shit, but I had such a jones for greens! They also brought me 6 bottles of A-1 steak sauce. If I do move back to Australia, I'm bringing a fucking case of A-1, or at least making sure I can order it online. A life without A-1 is a life not worth living.
BTW, I called my mama twice today for her gumbo recipe for you. The first time I called she was at work, and when I called at night she had gone to bed. But she isn't working tomorrow and I'll call her in the morning. My stepfather also said he'd tell her to email the recipe. I'll get it to you tomorrow.
Oh, and you can buy canned okra on the internet .

No problem. Hey, thanks!!
Things I miss: Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing, Lawry's Seasoning Salt, A-1 Steak Sauce, smoked bacon, southern/cajun/creole food, mexican food, spicy foods....
But on the bright side, Japanese food is SUPER cheap here. :D My mum fed 3 people with $15 (including drinks) and we still had takehome! :D
----
I went to the market last night with a huge craving for greens and just bought a cabbage and at half a cabbage RAW. >_> I have issues.

Hey, sounds like coleslaw to me. :D
I love raw cabbage.
Lysondra
08-17-2006, 09:21 PM
I have a long-standing issue with coleslaw. I've had it every year for 20 years. I've vomitted every single time. Let's not lament on why my mum chose to give coleslaw to a 6 month old baby.
But it was good... and then I put some in a stew with a billion vegetables and some crab. That was tasty too.

Just found canned okra here. It was from a Greek Deli. 2.80 for a large can. Although given the size okra 'pods' that may not be very large. Notiec Arabic writing on it in addition to the Greek and English. So you might want to check out the names from before and pop into a Middle Eastern or Greek Deli.

Mustard here is too week. I like gulden's spicy brown mustard. Avoid the Hot English though, it is horseraddish and will knock your socks off.
If you dig mustard, I'm a big fan of the Jack Daniel's line. I think they have three or four types of mustard. Though, for hot dogs, I don't mind the big barrel bottle of the cheap stuff.
And if you have difficult with pumpkin pie, try sweet potato pie instead. It tastes pretty close, it's good, it's from Louisiana, and maybe sweet potatoes are easier to come by. I've got a recipe for that, too.
You got to make sweet potatoe PECAN pie. mmmm.

is the pizza any good there? Oddly enough, my favorite pizza is freschetta, four cheese, sauce stuffed crust. It's in the freezer section and I love it more than Papa John's, Domino's and the rest of the pizza places.

Alot of Aussies eat that awful thick crusted stuff, though you can get thin crust pizzas most places also....generally speaking the pizza isn't great in Australia, though good pizza can be found :)

If you make the point to go to an Italain place (that does pizza), you will usually get a good pizza here. $AUD7.50 and up. Do not go to pizza hut et all. La Porchetta pizza is passable at most franchises. Especially the one in Williamstown VIC. You will find their curst is always fresh.
I like smoked salmon pizza, with capers... but sometimes the salmon is not that nice. Artichoke heart pizza is nice, as well as antipasto.

missed a couple of pages, but you can get curly fries at hog's breath cafe, and quite a few places around adelaide. there's a little candy store in the mall here too that sells things like reese's pieces and peanut butter m&m's and all other types of american candy.
