They've already gotten a two hour story on his life in two days. I don't know if this sickens me or makes me happy. They already have ads for his biography eight hours later. :(

If I knew a man would look at my children the way Steve did when his girl was born, I might reconsider having children. They were his world. He was a great father. I have never seen a man look at a child with such awe, happiness and pride.

He was one of the few, that loved life in all of its forms. To me it is not so much that he could look at children that way, but that he could look at anything that way, even that which would terrify most people. He is one of the few men that ever earned my respect.

Awww...that's so sad. He truly was an amazing man. One thing that made him so great was his passion for all animals...and not just a select few. Makayla loves his show...and we were thinking of visiting Austrailia to take her to the zoo.

May he rest in peace. I am sure that his daughter will be just like him when she grows up...and although he's gone, his wife is just as passionate about wildlife as he was. He was just more "sensational" about. I am sure that his son will grow up...maybe not remembering his father much...but knowing what a great man he was.

My deepest and most sincere condolences go out to his family and children.

That is one of the things I regret I could not do for my son (and me) before we left Australia. I really wanted to see Australia Zoo.

It's disgusting. The media circus should hold the fuck off and let people grieve properly. So damn disrespectful.

GoldCoastGirl

I've watched all the media/news about him and the "Enough Rope" interview he did back in 2003. I'm hoping to be up in the morning to watch the thing Sunrise on Ch. 7 will do.

I have actually cried. Cried plenty. It is a loss. A loss for Terri, his wife. A loss for his daughter and esp. his son (who won't really remember him). It is a loss for Australia Zoo tho' it will carry on without him. It is a loss for Australia as he was a man with an obvious passion and a "fair dinkum" man... no airs about him. It is a loss for the environment and all her creatures.... he was a warrior for them and there is just no one else like him "out there".

The only good thing in all this is that he did die doing something he loved not in a medocre way (ie car crash or something). It was and is tragic as the accident was a freak one.

Just all sad. Sad :(

I'll cry for awhile yet. Even when the media move on... I won't forget him. I really respected him ultimately even tho' I teased him like the rest of Australia.

It's such a shame. He couldn't really totally pass on everything he wanted to pass on to his children. Does Bindi really know how to deal with the media so that she can bring about change? Will she use her love of snakes like Steve used his love of crocs to carry on his work? What will Robert be like when he grows up since he will only ever have very very vague/hazzy memories of his father?

I'm going to try to watch it all. It's my way of grieving. I'm going to get off my ass and get re-involved ( www.wildcare.org )

Personally....
I myself could never grieve after the loss of a public figure whilst in Australia, not at home in front of the television anyway. The media bombardment...and the bastardisation of death was always too much for me to handle. Sure i'd watch a few media reports...but the sensationalism is just so crude..so cruel and so relentless.
I'm getting off this computer and going to the Aussie pub here to find solace amongst other Australians.

Things happen fast when people died but if they really wanted to tribute him they should have dont it while he was alive. That would be more meaningful and heart felt.

I agree however the images of him are what I am seeking not so much what they are actually saying as they are saying the same thing over and over. Just to remember how great a person he really was.... I respected him as I can relate to his "fear" of humans over animals. Just wish I had his gift for animals like he did. He really did have a gift... it wasn't just for crocs either. Shame. Sad. *cry*

The below is going around MySpace at the moment... feel free to post elsewhere:

THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition. He was 44.

He collapsed at Batt Reef, near Low Isle and the resort town of Port Douglas, Queensland state police said in a statement. A rescue helicopter rushed to the scene but Irwin had died, the statement said.

Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef and said cause of death appeared to be a "stingray strike to the chest."

Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter," which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.

He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections.

He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Eugene, Ore., and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

Since hearing the news at work this morning, all I can think about is that line he said in that FedEx commercial he did with that snake.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Okp5FTKOB4&mode=related&search=

"In my line of work, if you are not absolutely sure, you are absolutely dead."

Never thought that line would turn out to be so prophetic. :'(

RIP Crocodile Hunter

Wow. I don't even know what to say... I feel weird. It is so surreal. I never thought anything like that would happen to him, I figured he would die an old man in his bed.

I will leave you guys with this...

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

i heard on the radio that it was really a freak accident type of thing, that sting ray stings are not usually lethal. however, the stingray shot its barb directly into his heart, which, underwater....i mean, i dunno, the friggin' odds of it hitting him there. and that's part of the sadness of it all. people dive with stingrays often, i've saw two of them underwater once, and they generally don't bother people. so while he did die doing something that he loved, the wounds from the animal that ultimately killed him are generally benign. i guess this was one of those things he couldn't anticipate.

www.animalplanet.com has a page up, as well. crazy. I was at a friend's house and his girlfriend was telling us she saw this online and it almost sounded like some sick joke. "A stingray got him in the heart", what are the odds?

We may not know you personally,
But we know you just the same,
For you were the Animals hero,
And it wasn't just a game.

You gave your all for the wildlife,
And showed us how you care,
We cannot express the way we feel,
But many will shed a tear.

The memories we are left with,
will stay for a very long while,
and when we hear that famous word,
Well CRIKEY we'll have to smile.

the only thing that we should thank the media for is the tape where steve sits there talking about Bindi like she was the most rare and amazing of creatures that ever lived. (prior to bob's birth).

it's pretty shitty to lose your dad as a little girl. i would pretty much do anything to have a tape of my dad like the one showed on Today Tonight where he was so proud he looked like he would explode. bindi is going to have a shitty time without a daddy - but at least she won't ever wonder what he thought about her!

our Premier has offered the family a State funeral if they want one.

On a lighter note, one of my favorite Steve Irwin moments was when he was informed he had accidentally squatted over a hidden nest of rattlesnakes. He was a very blase dude, but of course he looked a little "rattled" to be told he has his behind right over a nest of venomous snakes.
They should do a State funeral. He was as good a representative of Australia as anyone from there.

I know this may seem weird or sick to some, but I hope if he is burried, that he is burried in his Kahaki outfit. I think I only ever saw him in a suit once, and even then I'm not sure. I mean it is as much a part of him, as his enthuasiam for life. I can't even stand to watch the stuff on cnn now.

GoldCoastGirl
09-04-2006, 04:19 PM
He probably will be as the interview with him that the ABC here aired on Enough Rope back in 2003 showed how much of an aversion he had for anything other than his trademark kahaki. He said in that interview how out of place he felt in the "penguin suit" (his words) and that he managed to score heaps of flash kahaki outfits thanks to doing the movie.

At the time of the interview he said he had like over 40 pairs of kahaki shirt and shorts still in their plastic wrap never been worn and he only really wears them for special occasions due to the material being nice and all that....

Even tho' Discovery Channel will be setting up a fund in his honour. I believe it's best to donate to the fund that Steve himself set up. As soon as the website becomes more operational (it is bound to be inundated with people trying to access it so I'm not going to try right now) I will visit and donate myself (as well as find out ways I can help).

This was only the third ever reported case of a stingray causing death. Some horrible show last night made it sound like we should go on a witch hunt for all stingrays because they're so deadly. I was really upset. That's not what Steve would've wanted.

I'm so bummed! I am not one to fawn over celebrities, or to want to meet them, but I genuinely would have wanted to meet him. He had such an engaging personality and a magnetism that you just don't see every day. That, and the man had balls made of cast iron! We will miss you dearly, Steve.

There are a whole slew of ebay auctions in re: Steve Irwin....

Can others :help: me by sending these sellers who have newly listed auctions a request that they donate a portion of the final auction price to Wildlife Warriors ???

It is just not right otherwise. Some of the proceeds should go to honour Steve not make a quick buck. The downside of being in a capatialist economy.

I noticed you have a \newly listed\ auction and/or are auctioning off something in relation to Steve Irwin.

If you are not aware, Steve and Terri Irwin set up an organisation called Wildlife Warriors to help wildlife in Australia and overseas. Please, as a way to honour this man, could you send a portion of the final auction price as a donation to their organisation via www.wildlifewarriors.org.au. Please honour his memory not trash it. Donate some of the final auction bidding price to Wildlife Warriors. Thank you.

so ironic isn't it? How the man who gripped the jaws of death from giant size blood thirsty crocks, and the worlds most venomous snakes in the land, dies from a very rare attack of a sting ray.

also ironic :his 176 year old tortis dies within just a few months from steve.

lived for a full one hundred and seventy six years but dies just 2 short months ago.

to meet steve at the gates i would imagine.

God bless to the irwin family.

that's so true. i think if steve could somehow make one last comment on the subject, he'd say "it wasn't the stingrays fault. i invaded it's territory, i provoked it, it was acting instinctively"

i really believe that the absolute LAST thing he would want would be for a stingray to be killed over it.

GoldCoastGirl

It has been found (from the footage) that he didn't provoke the stingray at all. It did just act instictinvely yet he didn't provoke it at all.

Here's a message to his widow from Asia Carrerra:

09/03 - My heart goes out to the wife of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20349888-2,00.html) and their two little children. If anyone knows what it's like to lose your husband in the prime of life, leaving you with two little kids who will grow up without a father... *sigh*... I only wish I had Terri's email address, because I know in the days immediately following Don's death the only people it gave me any comfort to talk to were other moms who'd been through the same thing as me. Terri, I'm so sorry for your loss, but you will get through this. You have to, for the kids. And it will get easier with each passing day. Although it won't seem like it for many weeks to come, eventually, it will start to get a little easier every day. I promise you, it will...

Maybe one of our Aussies could drop it by her house.

Yeah, I know, it's not that simple.

I saw this news last night before going to bed and was utterly shocked.

I wrote a tribute to him in my blog:

Goodbye, Steve Irwin
God, I just saw the news and was utterly shocked... shocked by the news that Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, was killed.

I never met him personally, but I have met several people that did. While his energy was not everyone's cup of tea, nobody doubted his commitment to conservation and animals- especially reptiles. He will be greatly missed around the world.

What watching Steve did for me was to rekindle the emotion and the physicality involved in exploring nature as a child. There were times when I was watching him on TV where I could palpably feel that fascination I had still glimmering in the back of my mind. His boundless excitement took me at times to a place of wonderment that, as a jaded adult, was becoming harder and harder to access within myself.

He loved life, lived to the fullest, protected what he loved, and died doing what he loved. That, in my life, is something to strive for, and not cry about. The tragedy, aside from losing such a passionate voice for conservation, was the greater loss of a friend, son, brother, husband and father.

My heart goes out to his family and friends.

I am sure he is joined by his loved ones, including his dogs and crocodiles, in heaven.

Rest in peace.

We both tease. It's not like he's making fun of me, just Croc Hunter really. It's a joke we always made. 'Make me sound Aussie but not like Steve Irwin!' I always told my teachers. I just hope he decides against Crikeying me today of all days. :(

I have two functions I'm planning and I was wondering is some of you overseas girls could help for one and some local girls to help for another.

One:

Strippers for Australia Zoo

This Thursday I have gathered at least 5 strippers to donate all the money they make this day to Australia Zoo. Just this one day girls will go around and ask for donation on stage and off stage for the project. If any other girl overseas wishes to do this for a donation on Thursday, remind your customers, "What other charitable organization allows your donation to be put in a sexy girl's garter?" For those overseas (if any agree), I will setup an account all the money can be pooled to and donated at once.

Hot Bikini Car Wash for Australia Zoo

This idea is a little less thought out. Water in Brisbane is VERY hard to get so I am sending letters to various companies asking for water donations for this charitable event. I plan on gathering 5-10 girls to work on a Sunday with donated items and at $30 a car, someone can get their car washed by hot girls in bikinis! None of the girls will take home anything but every dollar will go to Steve Irwin's Zoo. If any girl can donate their time, please message me. Also, if anyone in Gold Coast or Brisbane can find any donations of buckets, soap, sponges or even better, water please email me at [email protected]

If this is able to be pulled off it will be a fantastic way to raise plenty of money. 100 cars is $3000!! :D
edit
Donation account has been setup at Paypal. All donations for Australia Zoo can be placed at paypal to morriganslayde.riumplus.com. If you're donating from yourself, please put "Self Donation" in the notes and if you're donating from Thursday please put "Strippers for Australia Zoo" in the notes so I know who to credit. Add your name if you want to be credited on the list.

As proof for the donations I will be taking screen shots of my donation numbers and me sending it. :)

Yay! :D I've got some friends who are coming in to put money in my panties for the first one, too! :D I'm going to setup a donation paypal address for this so we can all pool it together now that I know girls further away are doing it. :)
