This pole looks like everything I want--of course, it's the most expensive removable pole around.

Any opinions?

First, I'm fairly new to pole dancing. Only been doing it for about a year now.

I own two poles - the first I got was the Platinum Stages removable one-piece pole which I purchased in June. I received a "hybrid" model as they were changing the design at the time I ordered it and they sent me a combination of parts from the old style and the new style - which work together though it was confusing at first as they sent the old instructions and the parts looked different from what was pictured on their website!

The second is a brass multi-piece removable pole from PoleDanzer. I just received this one last week and am still evaluating it.

I think you really have to have a pole in hand and use it to see if you like it - it's pretty hard to get a very good idea about a pole just by reading descriptions. If someone else has experience with it, then of course you'll get some first hand opinions which will help as well.

The other thing that I have found that is essential, especially to the removable poles is customer service. These poles will have problems from time to time. Especially if you work them hard. They require consulting with the manufacturer and trouble shooting. A removable pole simply has too many things that you may need help with or may not work right, so friendly customer support will ruin a pole purchase experience.

My evaluation of the two poles:

Platinum Stages

Design - good quality though the old parts of the design are horrible - the old floor mount plate is bulky and gets in the way. Fortunately that has been changed with new design. Unfortunately, I was not given the option of the new design despite the fact that it was already advertised on their web site two weeks after mine had been delivered!

There is a hole at the top of the threaded screw that extends the pole up to the ceiling...you put a screwdriver through the hole and turn it to extend and tighten the pole up. This is a great feature! Very easy and convenient to use.

The pin that changes the pole from stationary to spinning is impossible to remove when the pole is up in position as the pressure from tightening the pole also puts pressure on the pin, making it impossible to pull out.

Customer service: from 1-10 I'd give a 1 or 2 at best. My last call when I fell and the pole broke, was not returned as promised "within 24 hours" and when I called back 2 business days later was informed that it was NOW the day after the holiday and I was "lucky" someone was there! ::)

My first problem when I got the pole was the design change which they obviously were aware of since the new one was on the website so soon after I received mine as well as my receiving parts from the new pole style - it would have been nice if I had been informed they were improving the design and if I waited two more weeks I"d have the new and improved model instead of surprising me with a combo of the two. In addition, I've repeatedly been informed that I was "lucky" to get a free "upgrade" as the old pole didn't have the improved parts! True...but I didn't get the old pole when it was the ONLY pole they offered and it's not an upgrade when you are improving design, the price is not going up, and the old pole is no longer being sold!

I've called 4 times and each time I not only get a different story, but they are very confrontational and defensive! He was argumentative and repeatedly cut me off whenever I tried to talk. Last week, I fell off my PS pole and it broke...first words were "you had to put it up wrong our poles DON'T break or fall". The conversation deteriorated from there - to my finally actually being accused of "harassing" them (4 phone calls in 6months , three of which included inquiring about now purchasing a multi piece pole!) and then I was offered a "great" price just to "get me off his back" because he "didn't want to deal with me anymore"! :O

Oh...I was also informed that no one makes a brass multi piece pole. See my next review of a brass multi-piece pole!

PoleDanzers:

Design: Strong brass multipiece pole. The ceiling mounting plate is about 4x4inch in diameter. I question the stability of this. I did fall off this pole as well...but I may not have had it mounted correctly. I've since learned that removable poles should be re-tightened frequently and I was not doing that with either pole...just tugging on it and assuming it was enough.

The pieces do not screw together...one piece has an inner steel sleeve that slides into the other piece with a "male-female" type of connection. So far, there is NO movement and the connection seems very stable. This sleeve is extremely heavy and strong.

Downside...sliding pieces together is a bit difficult, but I have yet to try some sort of lube/silicone to see if this will help. Also, not happy about having to use a wrench to tighten the screw that extends the pole up to the ceiling - this can be a bit cumbersome.

Customer service: PHENOMENAL! I can't say enough about the people at PD! They really care about their customers, their customer's opinion, and the quality of their pole. Very friendly and courteous so working out problems is so much easier and worthwhile! When I fell off this pole, the first words I heard were "ARE YOU OK?"...then "OK, tell me what happened!" No accusations, just listened to my story and asked questions then told me what to do differently next time.

Sorry about the length of this, but I hope my review was helpful!

I just wanna say,
thanks for all the information stripper web provided me with concerning poles,

i ended up ordering a brass pole from METALFAST in the UK, but theyhave some in stock in the US. i ordered it to Toronto CA, and they shipped in no time...like within 2 weeks. very fast, very efficient, and i got a beautiful piece of metal. it was a permanent fixture, and i got my moneys worth. (i paid a little over 200$cdn

now i have moved to the US, so couldnt take my baby with me, and i have just yesterday ordered another pole, because i cannot stop dancing....lol
so i ordered the XPOLE, the origional Super Pole, Vertical Dance advocates it.
i found the CS very pleasant, efficiant, and it should be here in a week. the cost was signifcantly less than PS or lilmynx, despite the fact i ordered from the UK!!!!
my total including shipping was 360$us. so ya!!! i wouldnt have ordered a removable pole from anywhere else!!

its unbeleivable cheaper than ordering (the superpole) from any other company in the US!!!!! dont deal with the nonsense $$$ or service PS or anyone else gives you, until they get their act together. (im not bashing lilmynx but the superpole is pricey).

i will try to let everyone know how it works out, but i am pretty confident in the Brits as far as poles go,.....lol, not sure why,(probably cause theyve been working on the commercial stripper pole longer) but they seem to know what they are doing, and are nicer as far as service goes. im sure i will be pleased and get my moneys worth.

thanks vertical dance, i dont know you but youve been a helpful source for me on mypole forums so....
where IS mypole forums now anyways???i cant find it anymore!!!!!

peace and love.

I ordered the Platinum Stage brass pole from platinum Stages about a month ago. I was amazed with their service- 4 days from order to delivery at home. the stage is very sturdy, and I am 100% satisfied with it. Its the first time I am using brass-its harder for spinning but easier than stainless steel for tricks. Anyone with advice on how to clean the brass?

YAY! At last someone has ordered the stage w/brass pole version....(I want one too).

Give us a full review. What did you hold the stage down with? Did you buy it with sides? How do they look? What do you mean its harder to spin with, can you only do 1 spin or more? How is the grip (I have small hands) Does it get slippery fast? Is it really heavy to carry? What top did you get?

Got my eye on this one for the longest. I wish Platinum Stages would offer this on auction on Ebay so I could try for it. Had 3 poles now and the only one that has been any good was the Platinum Stages stage one I tried at a dance studio.

OK, well. On its own the stage is quite heavy about 70kg's with the pole. I did buy it with shiny black sides, (plastic sides that are removable if necessary). I find the brass harder to spin with than the steel poles but it seems better for tricks, like its easier to hold onto and not fall on your arse upside down!~ It gets slippery the same rate as the steel ones but shows the marks quicker.

I havent tried moving it since I assembled it, and dont think I would be in any hurry to do so. (I wouldnt classify it as portable) The top I got was the black tile and its is not slippery at all. see here ..

Sootica, thanks for the review. What are you holding the stage down with underneath? It looks really good. I wish Platinum Stages would put some proper photos on their website of all of the tops with sides (the ones they have up there do not give them justice) so you can get an idea of what they look like properly.

They are currently selling the same steel pole/no sides version on Ebay and I have a right mind to ask them to offer this version maybe once every 2 months or so. Pah!

How much did it set you back altogether? Are you happy you bought this one instead of the superpole?
Questions questions...

Hi Charlygirl. I am currently not weighing it down with anything. It is quite steady and doesnt slide on the carpet either. They recommend weighing it down with sandbags so I bought two, but still need to place them above the cross bars under neath. The sides are optional..you custom build your pole/stage on the site..it all adds up though. Mine has quick release and wheels so with delivery it came $703.68. I have always wanted one of these so I never really looked around for another type. My other pole is one that is completely removable made of stainless steel. It went through my previous lounge's roof, hence my decision to get a self-sustaining pole. Ha ha. Here are some more pics.

Empyrean
02-09-2006, 02:42 PM
Scootia, you said you aren't using the sandbags and it doesn't seem to need them...are you doing inversions on the pole? Do you do a lot of advanced tricks? I'm trying to figure out if it truly can be used without sandbags for the more advanced work.

Also, I'm curious if it can be transported easily for parties. The girl there told me that the stage can break down into either 2 or 4 parts...and in two parts it would still be light enough for me to carry. Also stated that someone new would take up to an hour to assemble it, but someone experienced can set it up in as little as 15 minutes.

What is your opinion? Would this actually be manageable to transport to home parties?

Also, can you tell me roughly how large are the pieces you have once you break it down into 2 pieces? How large are they if you break it down into 4 pieces?

I know that's a lot of questions! Thanks in advance!

Mary

Hi, I have an XPOLE and recommend it to anyone. The cust service was great, it was delivered fast, the carry case (optional extra) is sturdy and the pole pieces fit in really well. It's dead easy to change it from static to spinning - takes about 15 seconds and you don't have to take the pole down to do it. I can put it up by myself in about 5 minutes - and Im quite a small woman. Mine has been up for a couple of months and I've had no problems with it, can swing, climb and invert and the pole stays very stable. Just retighten it every so often.

I have been devouring this thread and all the links posted in it and madly trying to make notes for myself.

I've been looking into buying a pole mainly for home entertainment purposes and also becuase just about every magazine you look at it be it from guys mags through to the celeb women's mags extoll it's virtues for fitness.

Until now, I've been able to find information on suppliers here in Australia but no real advice on brands/types of poles. You have all been a valuable mine of information!

Both the X-Pole and Lil Minx are available here. I see the Lil Minx pop up often through out the threads so I will be giving it another look, the X-Pole suppliers here have pictures of Miss Exotic Dancer Australia showcasing it so to speak - however I am a little uncertain if this is because she prefers it.

There is also The Pussycat Pole Company, has anybody form Australia ever dealt with one of these suppliers?

Once again a big thankyou for all the information I have found here! Also a an apology I din't mean for this post to be sooooo long.

If you look at the Australian site for X Pole, you'll see pics of Miss Pole Dance Australia (Jamilla) using the X Pole in what looks like her living room (look under X Pole Action and click on Jamilla) ... I would think then that that's what she uses and prefers...

X-pole review!

I got my X-pole today and I had to stop spinning long enough to sit down and tell you all about it! I've been impressed with what I've seen online so far, but not having seen it in person, I couldn't give a first hand account - until now!

This is my THIRD pole and I've seen one other in person - so I have four brands to compare now. So here is my evaluation:

WOW! simply doesn't say enough!

I am SO impressed with this pole! I will TRY to keep it concise!

1. Shipping: My pole was shipped on Friday 3/10 and I received it today!

2. Packaging: This may be silly to some, but I can't believe the box they send it in! Well packaged and protected and this box would be a great occasional travel case for your pole.

The box has a hard foam lining to hold all the pieces in little cut out openings - every piece fits in a neat little opening. Nice, neat and obviously done with a lot of care for how it looks and how it is protected.

3. Instructions/assembly: It comes with a DVD and a brochure! After watching the DVD, it was a breeze to put up the first time. First time probably took about 15 minutes, but then we have a high ceiling and had to use a ladder and two of us because of it.

4. General construction/strength: Heavy/strong pieces. The threaded fittings appear very secure. My husband hung on it and it felt secure to him as well. The ceiling mounting plate is a great feature for stability.

5. Finish: I had never tried a chrome pole before. I currently have a brass pole and I felt this was nearly as grippy as the brass, if not just the same! Definitely grippier than polished stainless.

6. Spinning to Stationary: this is the first pole I've used where you can actually do this easily WHILE THE POLE IS UP AND IN PLACE! Takes 10 seconds to switch.

7. Price: when you compare the features of this pole with similar poles, the price, even with shipping from the UK is very competitive!

8. Adjuster cover: this piece slides up and locks in place to cover the extender screw coming out of the top of the pole. It not only looks much nicer but adds protection so that you don't scratch your feet on that extention if you invert up high like I've done in the past!

9. Miscellaneous: This pole just looks beautiful. There is no threaded rod sticking out of the top of the pole. Instead there is a chrome cover that slides up to hide that portion of the pole, once it is in place. This is also good protection as I have scratched my feet on that rod when inverting on other poles.

There are several tools provided with the pole for setting up...rods, a hex wrench and a large hand wrench. All nicely made out of heavy material. Nothing cheap about this!

Case: I got the carrying case and I am SO glad I did! Obviously many features were well thought out! The foam packing from the box, fits right into the case to hold everything perfectly in place.

Threaded connections...smooth and clean to avoid scratches and strong!

Instructional portion of DVD: FANTASTIC. Katie does a fantastic job of not just SHOWING the moves, but teaching them along with her assistant Jill. GREAT beginners DVD and it looks like enough to keep a newbie busy for a while!

Are you all tired of me yet? Good cause I'm going back to play with my new toy!

yay, i'm so glad to hear some positive feedback on this pole :D glad to hear you like it too!
my housemate and i are thinking of getting one after our exams. we were sitting in our study area this afternoon, collectively going mad with frustration. i had been looking at the x-pole site earlier today and said to her "wouldn't it be cool if we had a pole in the back room we could just go jump on and release some energy on it when we needed to.

and we've both been bitching about an inability to practise pole tricks at our respective workplaces...so this will be really cool!

once again, *so* glad to have heard how great it is ;D

For those of you who have built your own poles, how portable is it? I live in an apartment and would love to put a pole in my bedroom for personal fitness/practice, but I'm planning on moving around a lot before I "settle down".

Empyrean
05-15-2006, 02:02 PM
I have not "built" a pole - though we are going to have one custom made soon - but like many others I use a portable pole. This is good if the ceiling is sturdy and is FLAT (not vaulted) as you can move it from room to room, take it down anytime you want, take it to a friend's house AND take it with you when you move.

Part of the problem I've had with the portable poles currently on the market is that they are only about 6 feet tall off the top of the platform which makes inverts and a lot of advanced moves very difficult to do as that is too short.

They are VERY expensive, heavy and clumsy to transport, and storage isn't as easy as a portable pole.

I would think a portable, multi-piece pole would work best if you plan on moving around a lot.

Quick question about the Lil Mynx pro pole: Does anyone know if the top-of the line model ($450) still has the rotator function? I fear it doesn't, since it comes in two peices.

Also, what do you think of the seam between the two halves? Thanks..

Does anyone have any advice on finding studs? I bought a lil mynx some time ago, and me and my fiancee had trouble finding them in our apartment. We bought the studfinder they sold w/the pole, but it didn't seem to help much. So then we went to meijer and bought a better one and that did not help either. After putting up a bunch of unnecessary holes in the ceiling, we gave up and decided to wait until we bought another house.

But now I really want my pole up!! Has anyone had problems finding studs?? Is it possible our apartment studs can't be found?? My fiancee is worried about the damage caused or hitting something else while searching. Any ideas???

does he have a stud finder? you can pick those up for pretty cheap at home depo....

AnnaPDX
06-08-2006, 10:21 AM
I had problems finding my studs too. I don't know why, my stud finder has always worked fine on the walls but on the ceiling it kept indicating studs, and then saying there wasn't a stud in that place a minute later! I ending up finding one through trial and error but only two of the four bolts ended up in it, which makes me a little nervous but it's held up so far. And I ended up with several extra holes in my ceiling which I need to patch up.

sassysummer
06-08-2006, 11:26 AM
be sure to check for studs both ways...meaning lengthwise and widthwise..sometimes studs are going in a different direction than you think (our in my house does)

first put the stud finder on the ceiling.
then push the button holding it down
mover SLOWELY across the ceiling..studs can be like 4 ft apart, so keep going.
if nothing lights up, then change directions
once you find it going one way, move the stud finder on the other side of where you marked (at least a foot away) and move the stud finder towards your marked spot...

do this a few times until your positive of where the center of the stud is.

if you have to drill holes, start with the smallest drill bit first, that way it will be a very small hole in case you miss.

if you end up poking holes i the ceiling, just get some putty (or white toothpaste), it's super cheap and the landlords wont even notice

Empyrean
06-09-2006, 07:20 AM
There is a trick to using stud finders...they aren't that easy.

Not sure I can explain but what I found was I needed to put the stud finder against the ceiling, press the button down immediately before sliding it. It will beep at this point and then stop beeping as it settles down. The first encounter with a solid surface will result in a beep, even though there is not necessarily a stud right there.

Now slide it SLOWLY - it should beep as it encounters the edge of the stud and again as it passes the other edge of the stud - about two inches later.

Keep sliding it and you should reach another joist and it will beep again after about 16 inches - which is the standard width of joists in the US - other countries can be different.

Of course, if you have an attic, you can go up there and figure out where the joists are located above the ceiling. Also, many ceilings have little bumps where the nails that hold the drywall to the ceiling were placed. These were of course placed into the joists to hold the ceiling in place and over time, with settling of the house, you might find those nails starting to bulge out and see a little bump.

Very few homes have floating or false ceilings made of drywall, but there are a few, so it IS possible you do not have joists right above the ceiling.

Another possibility instead of using a nail and leaving larger holes is to use a longer straight pin so you don't mark up the ceiling as much. If you get the ones a dressmaker uses that are longer and have colored balls on the head, you can generally push these through the drywall. If you encounter resistance behind it, you've likely found the joist.

I bought my pole from Lil Mynx about 2+ years ago and have never had a problem with it. I bought the black one and love it. It was really easy to put up and I have it on carpet. I used the long screw to put it into the stud in the ceiling. Then you just put the pole up and the tension from the spring inside keeps it up nice and tight. It does not slide around like I was worried about. I did draw a little square around the top of the pole on the ceiling so I could tell if it was moving at all.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!

Luck to all of you with your poles!

so they got rid of keith? thats a surprise i thought he owned it, no one in the uk will touch them, anyone who has had dealings with the has been less than satisfied and almost certainly out of pocket.

no, he is still there...it's a new cs running it though. her name is Kim. So far I've been very happy with the service I've got from her. All poles have been shipped out promptly, no complaints! She's super nice.

I've been looking to get a pole here at home and am now fairly-seriously shopping. Thanks for the great info; LM was one of my first choices and will probably be my purchasing spot of choice.

kim sounds great but keith is the problem. compleetly unhelpful, rude and confontational.

I emailed Lil Mynx the other day who bent over backwards to help me and i am not even a customer of theres.
