I am 100% positive that I will be buying a pole within the next three months. I feel bad pretty much asking the same question, but after reading through all these combined threads again, I am still confused. I really do not know what pole is for me. When I go on the sites, I don't even know what I am looking for. I feel dumb:-[
I live in an apartment, have Berber carpet. I would like a pole that has the option of spinning and can stay in place. I would not like something too slippery, but not too grippy. I would also like something I could remove when the parents come on over.
If it isn't too much trouble, can anyone post a link as to what pole I should be looking at? I am pole illiterate, so I would appreciate this very very VERY much;)
A million thanks!

you're fine with carpet. my whole house is carpet, berber is actually quite nice since it's fairly flat.
you will need to to tighten more often (which you should do at least every 30 minutes of play, more so on the spinning pole), because the carpet and pad will keep reacting to the pressure, as will the beams in the ceiling.
not too slippery/too grippy is all relative. i have students who say that stainless is too slick (it is the slickest of metals), and others say it's perfect. same with brass, some say it's too grippy, others say it's perfect.
i have been on almost every type of pole, i always go back to the stainless, it's just smoother to work on and i don't get the pole burn like i do with all the others.
but you need a fully removable one, like the superpole.
if you plan on moving in the next year or two, i highly suggest a multipiece superpole (http://mypolecat.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=767672). if you're not moving anytime soon, then a regular superpole (http://mypolecat.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=766179) (this particular one is brass, but the come in stainless too) is fine too.

I recently bought an X-Pole off of Amazon (best deal). I couldn't be happier with it: it comes with a DVD that shows you how to install it, and it feels VERY secure (even with heavier people swinging on it)! It really does not budge, even when I grab onto it and shake it as hard as I can.
It is a bit less 'sticky' than my work pole, however. To me, this is an advantage: my pole at home makes me stronger, so the same moves seem easy when I get to work.
Couldn't imagine being happier with a pole. Then again, I've heard good things about other poles, too...
Oh. And it is completely removable, and very easy to tote around. It even comes with its own sporty carrying bag...
It's currently unavailable on Amazon for some reason: http://www.amazon.com/Pole-Dance-50mm-Chrome-Set/dp/B000SJFS5A/ref=tag_prf_item_edpp_ttl
You can buy it off of the X-Pole website, but it ships from the UK, so you'll end up paying a bit more.
My ceiling is 9' tall, and my pole fits it nicely. Though if your ceiling is taller, you will need extensions.

no problem!
personally, i prefer the regular 2". I have both the 2" and the 1.75 in my studio. the problem with the smaller is that if you were to go into a club and they had bigger poles, it would be a lot harder to do what you are used to. plus the smaller ones are a bitch for holding on with your legs!
i do have students that love the 1.75. the girls with short fingers especially.
i would just rather learn how to do everything on the slipperiest, biggest pole available, lol that way i can do what i need on almost anything!

Just to clarify, Xpole does not ship from the UK as they have a distribution center in the US so they do not charge overseas shipping. Most shipping is $35 depending on the distributor. Also the XPole is out of stock in the UK right now but we have plenty of stock that just arrived in the US.
I agree with Summer on the 2 inch diameter. It is very seldom that anyone NEEDS a smaller pole. I've met very few women who's hands were so small that they could not use the 2 inch pole.
The smaller poles are great for hand grasp but harder for leg grip. Of course, whatever you learn on you will get use to, but if you are working in clubs the standard is 2 inches so that IS what you want to get use to.
If anyone has any more questions on Xpoles, feel free to contact me.

I am planning on building an inexpensive DIY version for use in our high vaulted ceiling living room. My wife wants something to practice on prior to her first audition.quote]
Your wife shouldn't practice! New 'girls' make more money because they're awkward and have no clue what to do with a pole! It makes them cuter!
Or do you mean her first audition on a real pole (you as the audience)?

I figured I'd post this question here. I'm at a club and already have a pole mounted to the stage, two poles actually. But I want to convert one of them to a spinning pole. Does anybody have some suggestions on who to contact? Most of the stores that sell the poles want to sell everything, I just need the spinning bracket/adapter.

I did a lot of research before buying a pole and finally decided to get an X-Pole. I ordered it off of ebay and didn't have to pay for shipping but it was still really expensive. I love it! the only thing is I haven't been able to take it apart (the actual pole that is) but its ok because then its easier to put up. I also love how it can be static or spinning. I'm planning on auditioning after finals week and I'm glad I got a pole first or else I would have looked like a total idiot lol those tricks are way harder then they look!

Well again, you really don't need pole tricks to get hired, or make a lot of money. Customers don't care all that much, though it will sometimes get their attention. However, that being said, it will give you the confidence to feel good about yourself onstage, and that is what really matters. I have seen really shy, timid dancers without much skill at all, blossom and dance better (aside from the tricks as well) once they got confidence from doing a few tricks.
Personally, I love the challenge, and the (unusual) exercise. I could give a damn about looking sexy, and every single male pole dancing video I have seen, the fucking guy looks gay as hell. Well, so what--and more power to them--but it's sure as shit not the way I do my tricks...
I still say the best pole to get for at home if you want to up your performance at work is a tough, slippery pole. Mine is best of all, and cheapest, lol. But a brass pole, Superpole, or X-Pole would of course be more fun at home.

the flange is stuck on the end. it wont move up 14-15" like the directions say but it also wont come off!
*edit: ok i called PS and they told me to hammer the flange onto the pole. did that and slowly but surely got the damn thing on! putting the entire pole/stage together was a real fucking nightmare. im more exhausted from assembling it than actually using it :P. i wouldnt recomend the stage/pole combo unless you cant get a removable pole...damn those vaulted ceilings!

I just got my P.S. Multi-piece in and installed tonight. The stainless is more slippery than brass, but all I had to do was grip a bid harder when I was inverting and it was fine. The pole feels very sturdy as far as not slipping from the walls go- BUT- it moves very, very slightly toward the center of the pole where the largest piece screws in to the next piece. I'm not sure how much of a problem this will/won't be.
I worked up the guts to do any spins yet, because I'm still weary of the pole's ability to carry a sideload- it feels so sturdy, but I want to start out slow and safe. I've put my body weight on it, kinda hanging while standing up, and sort of "swung" around that way.
Oh, and so far customer service has been good and it arrived in about a week.

Allice...dont worry about the sideload...if I can do what I do..and it holds..swings are not going to be a problem.
I have recently tested out the weight cap on the PS Multipiece...it held a 238lb woman on a swing!
Snow White..glad you got it sorted. The first time you set it up..it is a pain..but now...pole away! :)

Good Evening Ladies,
Just a little FYI. I got my X-Pole for Christmas and finally put it up ,this weekend...Only it did not fit. It was not high enough. My bf had to order it from the UK and thee ceilings there are very low apparently. We used both extensions and after tightening every thing it was not long enough to reach the ceiling. We are going to sell it on Ebay. Can any of you ladies recommend a USA POLE COMPANY that has awesome poles? The ceiling is about 100inches high or 8.3 feet high. He spent $300 plus shipping from the UK. I am so disappointed. He felt so bad that it didn't fit.

We got a Lil' Minx pole a few months ago for my newbie dancer wife. We chose that pole because it had a nice accessory for vaulted ceilings. It seems sturdy enough, but flexes more than I expected. Maybe that's normal. I don't know. For her 110 lb. body, it should be more than adequate. The hard part is getting her to actually practice on it. She's always "too busy".
Incidentally, she works at a club that falls in the "typical neighborhood club" category. Mostly average dancers, low prices, etc. Good for a beginner with a strong work ethic who can immediately become a top earner. We just visited another club out of town (topless vs. the bikini bar she works in). Holy crap!! They had some incredible dancers and pole professionals. At least in comparison to where she's currently working. It was intimidating and inspirational for her at the same time.
I have a newfound respect for the truly talented girls out there. You girls rock!!!!

Just wanted to share my personal experience with home poles. I've stuck to the Platinum Stages poles and the multipiece is great if you move a lot but can be painful sliding down sometimes because the section breaks can catch a little bit of skin sometimes. My personal favorite is the superpole one piece (which I have right now) because it has the option of being a spinning or standstill with just putting a pin in the bottom that comes with it. I don't know how you girls do it with the stainless steel because I have brass and even that is a bit slippery still. I'm hoping over time it will get more "sticky"
Has anyone ever tried that gel that PS sells to help stick to the pole better? I was thinking of getting some.

This doesn't make sense. It's not the ceiling height that is different, it is the space between their ceiling joists that is smaller.
Either way, the Xpole is not developed for a "standard" height but the Xpole basic package fits all ceilings from 7'4" up through 9' therefore this pole should have no problem fitting an 8'3" ceiling.
Also, Xpole has been sold in the US now, and shipped from the US no matter whether you purchase it from their UK website, for about 18 months now.
If your ceiling is in fact higher than 9 feet, you can purchase extensions to fit ceilings up to 11 feet so there is no need to sell your pole.
Feel free to write me if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help you as I'm one of the US sales reps.

Any ideas about what pole would be best for me?
Cliff Notes:
1. Standard apartment (8ft ceilings)
2. I spin way better on SS than brass, but clubs have brass so maybe that's what I should get so I can practice. (I fly in the reverse grab into other spins, but on brass I feel stuck and can't even do it)
3. Can I buy something later to extend it if I move?
Anyone get stationary b/c it's cheaper and regret it later?

just get a platinum stages multi piece pole. the standard multi will fit your ceiling now, its stainless steel, and you get extensions later on to make it taller. i have 4 multipieces, one for my house and 3 for one of my studios.
i always tell people that either live in apts or plan on moving in the next year or two to get a multipiece over a one piece.

that's just an xpole it looks like. personally, i don't like chrome at all. it literally burns me (i got a burn blister on my wrist and fingertips!) plus, because it's a coating, you have to be careful not to chip it/scratch it, no metal, like buckles or rings etc, should be on it. i don't care what anyone says, if it's a coating like that, there is always a chance it'll get ruined, i'm rough on my poles, so i don't want something that i have to worry about.
your fine with hardwood floors, i've used my poles on hardwood, laminate, carpet, concrete and linoleum! as long as it has a "padding" on the bottom, your fine.

yea, i get that, i have the same problem. but you can't get a multipiece brass, the metal is too soft. but eventually you get used to switching between the two types if you use both types.

Why are spinning poles so much more expensive than stationary ones?
Is it worth the money for the option? The only clubs with poles that spin are VU owned, so I don't really have a huge incentive to get one.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned the DIY pole... for about $50 you can buy a steel pole and pipe nipples from a building hardware-type place. You can get them to thread the pipe there. I recommend anyone going this route to sand the pole... great for someone saving for a PS or Xpole.
If you don't want it up permanently, there are ways of doing that as well. :D

I'm wondering: To those of you that bought poles...do you actually use yours pretty regularly or did the novelty fade?
