Honey, if you believe that the DJ makes you 20% of your money, you go on ahead and tip him or her... well, whatever you want. I don't get a paycheck either. I've worked in clubs in which the stage tipping was a big deal, and, no, I DON'T think the DJ made me money; in one such club we had no DJ. Still made stage tips - good ones. I enjoy a good DJ better than a lousy DJ; however that does not translate into a financial difference. Seriously - this is not lack of experience or lack of consideration. I just REALLY don't believe that the DJ makes me money. And I've worked in plenty of clubs, and many places.
I must stress again that I haven't read a single person suggesting that one shouldn't tip the DJ - just that a) a percentage of our earnings is irrational and b) there is such thing as over tipping. The conservatives of this crowd (including me) have argued that the DJ's service is worth a reasonable, flat rate tip; not that they should be cut into small pieces and deep fried. I swear you would think the suggestion that a $10 tip is adequate is equal to wrapping their faces in duct tape and watching them smother or stew in their own vomit.
