I honestly hadn't thought of the extortion angle from Ms. Mangum's point of view BUT had they been convicted, a civil suit by her against them would have been a slam dunk on liability and damages could have been awarded in the millions. It certainly won't help the next gal who happens to work as a stripper.

Undoubtedly a possibility, especially if the civil suit's venue was in a city where the majority of the jury would have more in common with Ms. Mangum than with the defendants.

However, basic speculation was that Ms. Mangum never intended that criminal charges be filed ... only that the Duke Lacrosse boys would be willing to shell out some serious 'hush money' to quell the threat of charges being filed. However, she must not have been 'with it' enough to realize that her trip to the hospital that night would generate an automatic report by hospital staff to the local police which sent any 'hush money' attempt straight into the dumper.

Whatever the behind the scenes reality might have been, the fallout from Ms. Mangum's situation will definitely paint any future dancer who claims to have been victimized by a rich 'customer' as an opportunist rather than as a genuine victim.

Yes, I think the furor would have been the same if the facts were otherwise similar.

Well, for sure, Rev. Al Sharpton would have been in the defendant's corner rather than the plaintiff's !!!
