Didn't you know that everything you hear about people is true?

Strippers do drugs.

Black people only eat chicken and watermelon.

Italians all are mafioso.

Mexicans are all lazy.

The British all drink tea.

Oh.. and every single prostitute in the world does so on the streets for a pimp/babydaddy.
 and don't forget all strippers are molested.

because "the man" is trying to hold us down! Female empowerment must be stopped before it gets out of hand. Then they'll want to vote and stuff.

Now excuse me....I've got some lines to snort.

Funny! Me too.....

I've always figured there are two reasons people do drugs - recreational and to face the world.

Recrational use tends to not have too much of a long term effect (apart from hits on your bank balance, and probably a discernable effect on your health).

Taking drugs to face the world can be a (literally) lethal choice, because the drugs make the pressures 'go away' for a while, yet the pressures are still there when the drugs wear off. The tendency then is to take ever more drugs to escape from the pressure.

I don't think dancers per se are likely to end up on drugs, but I think there is a small percentage of dancers (as there would be in any other high pressure occupation) who will end up on them because of the stresses of the job. And that can be a very slippery slope...

Phil.

That is a broad generalization of strippers and I don't like it.

Italians all are mafioso.
.

damn right. ;D

no seriously, if i had a dollar for every custy that's asked me if i know any mafiosi/if my family has mafia ties/if i'm stripping because i need to pay off a mafioso...i'd be rich.

maybe that should be my new hustle: buy five hours in VIP with me or i'll send the mafia after you! :P

Too bad I'm not Italian or I would totally try that technique. The blonde hair/blue eyes kind of give me away... Think anyone would believe my family is involved with the German mafia?

In this line of work it is easy to get hooked on drugs. They are available and you have more than enough money to waist on them. You're working in a club, a place people go to party. That doesn't mean you have to participate in that part of the stripper lifestyle. Stay focused set goals for your life and don't plan on making dancing your life. Work to live, don't live to work.

^^I totally agree with what you said. It's a very tough business to make it in-you have to have your head screwed on straight, have clear goals in mind and not be easily influenced by other people, whether it be what they say, think, are doing or suggest that you do/try. If feel very fortunate that my hard partying days were long gone before I even started dancing, so my chances of getting caught up in the drug scene there are absolutely nil. You have to think though-I bet a lot of us have done drugs at some point in our lives (or still do), maybe even heavily (me!), and I think that all links back to the type of personality that would be drawn to this job in the first place. Someone who is unconventional/untraditional, is a risk taker, an individual who doesn't care about what mainstream society thinks in general, and wants to have fun and enjoy their lives. Correct me if I'm wrong, and flame if necessary.... ;)

My good friends all had this same fear for me when I started at 22. My defense was that if I had ever wanted to do drugs, I would've done them when I was more apt to peer pressure years ago. Not a very good defense, but I was part of the slacker crowd in school and had it a little rough growing up.
I am now 26 with 4 yrs of dancing under my belt. I was never offered drugs at the umpteen places I worked at, but I'm sure they were there if I wanted them. Far more than half of all the people I've worked with in the business have been addicts or recovering addicts. Not just drugs, alcohol as well.
If you choose not to do drugs, are not affected by peer pressure, or like me, have no use for potentially putting your life and financial stability at risk then you and your friends have nothing to worry about.

Try Irish mafia, and maybe! ;) Actually I'm part italian, part romanian, and after awhile I just started telling custys I'm romanian when they ask. b/c literally EVERY conversation with a custy went like this:

Silly custy: so where are you from?
Me: well i'm part italian...
SC: blah blah mob jokes blah aren't i clever? ::)

Except now when i just say Romania, I get dracula and vampire jokes. Siiiigh.

I dont do drugs now, never have tried. Smoked pot twice in the 7th grade. I have no desire to do them. I have been dancing for 5 years, I dont believe this is going to change.

Why is this always thrown at people wanting to strip? I know TONS of Wall Street employees who do insane amounts of coke.

But nobody says "Oh don't become a broker, you'll end up on drugs"...geez.

ETA: When I say tons, I mean over the years BTW.

Exactly. Sure, some strippers do coke, but some teacher molest children.
There's bad shit that goes on everywhere.

No. Plenty of strippers never use drugs, though they aren't uncommon in the industry.

That's total croc. I've been around the drug scene(NYC which is notorious for it) for many years and NOT once have I touched any of it. Except pot on occasion, but i'm one of those ppl who don't consider that a drug. :D But I was always a chicken shit to try anything....still am. That lifestyle of drugs just never appealed to me either.

And what's even funny is that the times i've been around it, I never noticed the ppl around me do it. :O

I drank, smoked, and did drugs before I was a stripper, never while I was a stripper.

I agree with Emily on her first post regarding the matter. He just chooses to believe what he wants rather than acknowledge the truth.

I LOVE the stereotypes! Do we all become lesbians or bisexual too? Many friends, even an ex boyfriend who worked in the industry "warned" me of the drugs, etc. Said "don't get caught up in the downfalls".

I went into this industry with a strict set of "standards" for myself that I won't compromise. I don't do drugs, and I won't. Many of the girls I work with do, but they know I don't and respect that. I am also not a heavy drinker. I don't drink at home, but I will have a few drinks at the club. I cut myself off by a certain time and that's it. Again, my co-workers know this and respect that. They joke about wanting to see me completely drunk, but they do know it won't happen anytime soon.

Not to offend, but if a significant other can't trust that you won't turn to drugs/alcohol/etc. if you work in this industry, doesn't sound like they trust you too much. Just my opinion. If you worked as a bartender the tendency is there to drink, for instance. Even in an office job you could meet up with "bad influences."
