I can't fault anyone who gives charity. I would prefer if they gave charity in this country. If Oprah wants to give to African-Americans, there are tons in Oakland and South Central who are dying and/or in poverty.

^^^ How are the girls in Africa that Oprah is helping "African-American"??/:O

Anywho, JennyDahl, Oprah does plenty for people in this country. Do you even watch her show? Did you see the recent Christmas "pay it foward" episode doo-hickey? She does plenty of things.

Further, how could you possibly know what she may be doing anonymously? I didn't know you were receiving her checkbook carbons.

You live in a capatalist country, she's free to make and spend her money on whoever she chooses! If you don't like it, find peace in doing your own part. Oprah is accountable for herself, as you are for yourself.

Next time you buy a name-brand anything, look in the mirror, before you point the finger at Oprah.

They are obviously African. I am making the statement that if she wants to give to her own race, there are more than plenty African-Americans in this country who need help. I hold the opinion that there are too many problems in this country we haven't solved to give to other countries.

I think the reason why people have a problem with Oprah is that this country made her filthy rich, yet she is promoting the problems in Africa, and choosing to give charity to them and not America.

Oprah DOES give charity in America! Are you saying that she should only give charity in America?

And when did Oprah say, she was helping the girls in Africa, because they were of her own race?

I stated that everyone should only give charity in America, not just Oprah. My viewpoint is that when we have solved all of society's ills, then we can help to solve others. It is a liberal viewpoint.

And when did Oprah say, she was helping the girls in Africa, because they were of her own race?

I'm not sure she ever said that. I assume that she chose Africa because of that fact. Alot of people want to help others from the country they came from.

^^^^ thats why I am currently pissed at Oprah ( I am sure she will miss me ) All I hear on the news is about her girls school in Africa and then just this week on her show she has this real tear jerking show about poverty in America ....wtf ... I haven't seen her putting in the effort to help out people in this country like she does in other places ......Angie Jolie sucks that way too . Take care of your own , don't shit where you eat .

There isn't even a comparison. While there may be psychological or social issues stopping people in America from 'pulling themselves up by the bootstraps', at least the possibility and opportunity is there. For young black girls in S. Africa, opportunity (for all intents and purposes) is literally not there. Oprah's trying to do something about it, how is that a problem??

ETA: For the record, if I haven't said it, I love Vancouver for the natural beauty of the rainforests, the diversity, and the quality of life.

The problem is that the opportunity is not there for everyone in America, far from it.

grew up in colorado, moved to asia when i was a kid... came back to colorado started dancing there at 21. hard economy, beautiful state, got tired of it. lived with my boyfriend on the road for a year, he worked for lockheed martin. it was incredible. wish i had been dancing at the time i would have loved to stop into everywhere. i was in a different city on the east coast every two weeks. been in portland or for the last two years. Talk about a stripping capital. it's unlike anywhere on earth. it's a very neo-ecclectic city, centered on art and liberalism, go feminist with pink hair. it's gettin small quick though, i'm leaving for africa in two weeks for a couple of months. thinking about chicago when i get back?

lol , I can not believe you people are still bitching about my Oprah comment !! I have not even checked this thread in like a week ...Its my friggin viewpoint , get over it . Everyone ( celebrities) seems to be so concerned with other countries all the while we are sinking further and further into a place that will need help but will not receive it because we make the world our enemies by electing morons to talk for us . Oprah is a great person and has done way more than we will ever know , at least in her lifetime . Never the less it PISSES ME off that all over the news everyone is making a huge deal about her helping people in other countries , we need help too . She was a poor girl in this country who made it out by the skin of her teeth and a whole lot of luck so is she is so interested in returning favors I know alot of dirty hungry kids with bad manners right here .

Ok please enough of that crappity crap and back to the OP >:(

Except for a couple of years overseas, a short time in Los Angeles, and six years in Louisiana, I have lived in Texas my entire life, and really don't wish to live anywhere else. I guess I have this burning desire to be a Texas Redneck.

In fact, I have this fantasy....I'm driving down a highway in West Texas, drinking beer out of a longneck bottle, when I see a DPS (Highway Patrol for you folks in the hinterlands) roadblock ahead. Thinking quickly I remove the label from the beer bottle, slap the label on my forehead, and throw the bottle out of the truck.

When I arrive at the roadblock, the state trooper looks at me and says, "Son, yew ain't drinkin' and drivin' out heah, are yew?"

I point at the beer label on my forehead and say, "No officer! I'm on the patch!"
