My wife and I actually work for a greyhound rescue here in Vegas. All three of our "kids" are, needless to say, Greyhounds.

Bless you DW someone needs to care for greyhounds after they finish racing. When I move out of my parents house I am going to adopt a greyhound - we have a greyhound rescue in Melbourne called adopt a greyhound.

hehe.
I have rescued a possum before. I did not keep it though coz that would be wrong IMO if it is possible to re introduce them to the wild.
It was a little ringtail pouchling but it's mother had been killed. I had to put it in my bra as it was unable at this age to regulate it's own body heat. It was the dearest little creature. If I stroked it's tail it would coil around my finger.
I so wanted to keep it as a pet but I knew that wasn't right.
Here is a pic of one I fed in St Kilda. They are so tame they take it right out of your hand.

i've had nosey since i was 6 and i'm turning 23 next month. he was rescued from a creek and my mom and i adopted him from petco in 1990. i wanted an orange cat and he was the one there. he's a lovable pest. he's 17 years old and still very healthy--i have a loft bed and he climbs up the ladder to come sleep with me!
ruby is my pride and joy. she's an abyssinian bengal mix and i love her, as she has tons of personality. unfortunately, my evil ex took her when he moved up to oregon and claims she never was really mine. he and i adopted her from a shelter.

Plus it is illegal as far as I am aware. Believe me, if I could have a wombat as a 'pet' I would however that is VERY illegal and thus I will have to content with the knowledge that one day I will be in a situation to have many of them yet in a 'carer' capacity (eventually return them to the wild).
Any native animal should NOT be kept as a pet! This includes birds. You wouldn't believe how many people think having a magpie as a pet is okay. It isn't.

I was NOT meaning you ;D I know you returned both of them. Just thru my own experiences that I have known of people who did keep magpies as pets and thus the magpie had to stay a 'pet' as such becuase it couldn't be rehabilitated to return to the wild. ;) It's all kewl.

GCG that is correct you do need an Australian Wildlife Licence to keep natives - except certain ones that are not listed. I do have a wildlife licence so I could have kept the possum to rehabilitate it but I would not do so as my experience only extends to reptiles. I don't know how to care for marsupials so I took it to a possum lady ;D

Where does one get this license? I have 4 extra and large cages and plenty of birdy love to spread and set free. :D

My next door neighbor's children found a baby sparrow that had blown out of its nest. They saved it by taking it in the house and feeding it finely chopped up meat every hour on the hour twenty four hours a day for a month.
When the bird was an adult, they had this serious talk about how it was a wild bird and should be free. So, after some crying, they went outside and had a little ceremony, opened up the cage, and let the bird fly free.
The next day, my neighbor was outside and a sparrow flew up and landed on her shoulder.

You are in QLD yeh?
http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/publications?id=1051
The EPA now issues the regulates the licences.
It's quite strict actually you have to send the record book in once per year listing - number of animals, species, births, deaths, eggs - even eggs that have died.
I have always just had the category 1 licence.
It might be done a little diff in QLD than in VIC - not sure.
But here is a link (above) to the relevant forms.

Here on the Gold Coast I know of one organisation where you can take courses to qualify as a carer instead of just a rescue-er. When I am in a better position in life I will become a carer and take on some of these courses.
Ring the organisation to have them answer your questions as they are in the "business" (as such) of wildlife rehabilitation so they would know and also be able to refer you to an org. closer to you.

My baby, Sunny. Adopted her from the SPCA. She can be quite viscious if she feels threatened in any way, but she also had a really sweet side to her. Her favourite treat is cucumbers!

Oh, and her fat adopted sister, Tigerlily. She goes mental for anything with menthol or peppermint, including lip balm. She will dig for gum or mints if she smells them in a purse.

I used to foster, mainly kittens since I was a hausefrau with time to tend em, but I did get a dog occassionally as well, and even an owl, which is the only one I have pics of handy. VERY interesting to have an owl in the house lemme tell ya lol And both my current pets were former fosters I just couldn't part with- Mouse is a gray Chartreuse fella I got as a kitten and Pearl is a snobby Siamese I got barely born, so teeny I wasn't even sure if she was a cat at first- glad I decided to bottle-feed her awhile and see what she grew into lol

Lol! I know! Tiger even likes the smell of nail polish remover! I can't even cut up vegetables for a salad without Sunny sitting at my feet, demanding cucumber...but it can only be the seeds of an English cuke--she doesn't like the flesh. It's pathetic how spoiled my cats are. What's that saying? Dogs have owners, but cats have staff! Very true! :D

We adopted these two wonderful dogs through Willing Hearts Dalmatian Rescue. They were found together as strays and left at a shelter. The shelter was full and they were scheduled to be put down when someone called Willing Hearts. We weren't looking to adopt two, but when we heard how attached theyare to each other, we decided to take both. It was the best thing we've done in a long time.

Yeah..really sad. This is the exact reason why my skin crawls every time my friend goes on about how excited she is that her moms dog is having puppies(yes, she was bred intentionally). I have thus far kept my mouth shut and just changed the subject because she knows how I feel about deliberate breeding...esp. by backyard breeders(they have no knowledge of breeding or husbandry...her mother is just bored and depressed and wanted a cute cuddly hobby to cheer her up). She isnt a bad person(all 3 of her kitties are rescues), she's just one of those people who doesnt want to know. Puppies are cute and she doesnt want to think about why it may be wrong.
I know I eventually will end up telling her to shut up about it though.Who knows, maybe it will do some good. She seems to want to do everything I do..I managed to change her mind about fur....I keep hoping.

Oh, I would NEVER keep my trap shut. I'm sort of of the opinion that if they want to do something so irresponsible and offensive to decent pet ownership, that THEY can keep their damn traps shut. I had this argument repeatedly with a pal of mine - once when he wanted to breed his dog (mutt) and once when he wanted to buy a puppy for his parents (when they said they didn't want a puppy). He insisted that his circumstances were special and different - I told him that EVERYONE thought their circumstances were different, and unless he was breeding his mutt to donate a kidney to his existing dog, there was no excuse. And I'm glad I didn't butt out and keep my trap shut, because I eventually reasoned with his girlfriend who insisted that they get a rescue and they are both very happy with her.

Here's Tera Lynn, she's my porn star
She was rescued from the dump by a woman that captures cats and sends the feral ones to be neutered and spayed and then relased (this way they aren't trapped in homes, but they also won't breed other kitties).. She wasn't feral so she was sent to the shelter. She was a little worse for wear and had an awful upper-respiratory infection along with an awful eye infection..
Now I can't get her to stop biting my toes or holding onto my leg as I drag her across the floor, she's my five pound wonder. She sleeps on the bed with me along with the puppers who still don't know what to make of her.
And yes, she does have a bit of a messed up eye, it points in the wrong direction and doesn't open all the way, but that cute little face was hard to pass up and I am a sucker for anything under 6 pounds, heh.

Thats the WORST..when people insist on breeding animals that arent even purebred....WHY??????
I normally would speak up..and have repeatedly in the past. But this isnt even something she's doing..it's her mother and nothing I said would change it. I've had this argument with her before..she knows how I feel. I would have DEF. started an argument if I would have had any chance of stopping it..but I found out after the dog was already pregnant. So now I'm just complaining that she's excited about her moms puppies.....not worth starting a fight over. Esp since so far she's taken the hint when I abruptly changed the subject. If a day comes when she doesnt take the hint...I will probably not be able to stop myself from telling her how selfish her mom is.

Maybe you would not want to do anything like this if kittycat is healthy and happy other than the eye pointing to the side, but in Salt Lake City there is a place called Eye Clinic for Animals. We took our old cat there when she had melanoma in her eye. My guess if we have a specialty clinic like that, there is one in most major cities.
Looking back, I'm not sure we did the right thing, because although we prolonged her life, I am not sure now that she wasn't quietly suffering. We may have kept her alive for ourselves, rather than for her, and maybe it would have been more humane to put her to sleep.
But that is not the case for your kitty, so you might want to check into that sort of treatment. There are more and more medical specialists for animals now. We even have a 24 hour emergency room for animals now.

Personally - personally, I would, if I knew how to breed, I want to breed pitbulls for size. I want little, itty, bitty "pocket pits."
Now THAT is an exceptional circumstance. I think that is a good reason to breed dogs. I can't do it in Ontario though. Drat.

That would almost be worth putting my beliefs on hold for...just for the name!! That would be one funky looking pup though. When I was a vet tech we had one client who had a rottweiler-westie mix. What a WIERD looking dog..sweet as hell but DAMN he was ugly. Big skull, short squatty legs with HUGE paws, stocky body covered in a mix of soft black and wirey white fur.

I dont think anyone is trying to get rid of the ones already here...but with millions of dogs being killed every year because of overpopulation...breeding more..esp intentionally breeding mixed breeds is just not right. Not to mention the wrong-ness of brutally overcharging people for what is esentially a designer mutt.

My vet says she is perfectly healthy (well now after all the mess before) since she had to fend for herself for so long she does have damage to the "good" eye and the other one she was just born with it small and pointed to the side. That's a reason we picked her since she wasn't the "prettiest" in there, she's perfect to me, but others might not agree, heh.
I really wish we could widen it for her, but then it would still be pointed to the side and honestly I try not to operate on animals if it doesn't need to be done. You can't explain pain to an animal, they won't understand.
Sooo, like you said, since she's healthy and definitely happy, I'm gonna let eyes rest. If the other one gets any worse I'll talk to my vet, she says it's just slightly damaged. If she says go, I will seek treatment so she won't go blind.

Most of my pets are and have been rescues. My Tiki actually knocked on the door!!
I don't have a picture of him, but this one Tom used to try to pick up on my first kitty China Doll before we got her fixed. We lived on the second story of an apartment complex in Austin, Tx., and he could get to our balcony from the roof.
I swear to god, he came courting 3 times, and every time I could smell men's cologne! Where it came form I have no clue, but every time I smelled it in the air, lol. I was nice to him and petted him, since I love animals, and I was impressed with his determination and choice of cologne.
But he was a huge brute, and China Doll was a tiny little kitty that had been knocked up when she was about 3-4 months old--we thought she had a hernia, and so did the vet at first! Then it got bigger and we thought she was dying, and when we rushed her back he was amazed (so were we), but there it was. Since she was young the litter meant she stayed very small as an adult cat.
I saved her from a big tree, actually, while I was drunk at a party in Chicago. I had to pull down the leaves and then the branch and climb up that way, the tree was to tall to do it otherwise. Then I dropped her into a big scarf a girl held out, so as not to kill us both on the way down. I never was crazy about cats before that, but having saved her, I fell in love and brought her home to my girlfriend.
But anyway, we moved to a different apartment on the other side of the complex, and one morning this big tom found our door and laid there, apparently dying. He was beat to shit, had been hit by a car obviously. We had just graduated from college and moved down from Chicago, so we were broke, and couldn't afford a vet for him. We took him to the Humane Society, thinking they could save him.
After a day or two I realized they might not really do anything for him, and went back down and got him--they hadn't, but he was a tough kitty. We nursed him back to health over the next two weeks, and let him go again when he started spraying in the litter box, lol.
