Me too.
It's upsetting (to me) to think about the commodification of animals. I know I'm a bit to the extreme on this issue, so I try to stay out of discussions like this. :-[ But people and places that sell pets for profit can be very saddening.
Agreed. Animal husbandry should be (in this day and age where it isn't so much for necessity anymore) for the love of animals.

I like it -- "Dottie Rebel ain't a purebred and neigher are her dogs"
Well for me it is "Vanessa ain't a purebred and neither is her cat!"
BTW, here is the pool full of jelly for Paige and Cameron to fight within. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!! :P
Just putting some humour into the thread. Nevermind me.
I guess I would go with a breeder over a 'moggy' dog because I am looking for a specific breed of dog (min pin or chi) when I eventually acquire a dog unlike a cat I just go for the female gender (not a specific breed).
The other reason I would go for a specific breed of dog is because, unlike cats, dogs can grow to be rather large animals and to be honest I am only interested in small breeds. I don't even want anything in the medium breed category and due to my stature (i'm short and petite) cannot handle any large breed of dogs.

GCG I am an active member of the RSPCA and the last newsletter that I received from them supports this. They want the selling of cats and dogs in pet shops to be banned and they are encouraging their members not to purchase dogs and cats from petshops.
While of course all animals deserve a loving home and it is not there fault where they were born etc, if no one buys from pet shops it will enforce the idea that people don't approve of these practices.
I would only buy a dog from a breeder or shelter and the same goes for a cat.
I have seen some shocking conditions that animals in pet shops have been left in.
I wish I could post the name of the pet store. I went there once and it is not air conditioned and it would have been 45 C in there and the puppies had no water. I complained to the staff about it and the fact that the animals were so hot. Wish I could have rescued them all from that appauling place.

I've held off on mentioning this but seeing as poor Latinos get bad press in most areas of discussion, on the subject of dogs...well, most have the mindset of "WHY would I pay a fortune for a dog...?" It's just not part of the culture. We always got free dogs & were happy with them. Also, some unique mixed-breeds have developed from street culture , like the "Paw-Wa-Wa" (Pomeranian & Chihuahua mix) the pit-bull mix, and Shepherd mixes (my dog is that, he's smarter & healthier than me most days.)
I guess it goes with the territory...Latin America's all about mixing....

I very much believe in buying only adult animals and only from a shelter. The sheer number of animals that get euthanised every week is sickening.

You can go to a rescue for a specific breed. These dogs have been health certified, temperment tested and usually fixed already. You'll pay a lot less, save a life, and still get the purebred dog you want, without contributing to overpopulation.

Breeders that don't have enough stock to breed within their kennel, breed with other kennels.
And woot for rescue babies!! (Three of my four kitties are rescues.)
I look at petfinder.com for rescues near me.
