Lysondra, you're making me homesick for Oz again. My ex-husband is obsessed with theme parks, and since he worked for Movie World we got into the associated theme parks for free. We spent so damn much time at Wet & Wild! I'm not a theme park person and haven't been to one since my divorce, but I miss the good times.

I sometimes wonder what my life would have been like it it wernt for punk. I was a young kid still in 76/77 but those first punks I remember seeing made a huge impression on me! I knew it was my thing from the word go, but I hid it from my family somewhat and to varying degrees up until 1980-1982, plus i also had the usual sort of kid stuff to get on with, dolls and hide and seek etc  When I was 12 I shaved my head and said fuck you to the world and there was no tuning back :)

I love the punk philosophy, hate the fashion statement. Love the original music too - good stuff like the Ramones and Blondie. Hate the loud random screaming and banging ineptly on crappy instruments. Which punk is genuine punk?
Fights over what is real punk can be deadly.
For my own, I like Black Flag/Rollins.
I began my guitar playing playing Pennywise covers.

I know I said I was going to bed but I had to toss in my two cents.
I'm not a punk purist. Punk, to me, is a combination of a do-it-yourself attitude towards making music, and an anti-authoritarian attitude towards everyone else. I think some of that leads to banging ineptly on crappy instruments and random screaming. But it seldom leads to signing contracts with major labels and selling out huge arenas. I mean, technically, it might, but I can't think of any acts that I'd call "punk" doing it.
But everyone's got their own ideas about punk.
And technically Blondie was New Wave not punk. 8)

I couldnt sleep for 3 days after seeing them play - I wasnt on drugs or even drinking at their gig, it was just so energetic it was crazy!
A guy I know got kicked out of the gig for stage diving he had really long hair so the bouncers recognized him and wouldnt let him back. The gig was too good to miss so he ran home, shaved his head, changed his shirt, ran back and got in again ;D

All of what you mentioned classes as punk, pretty much anything that was called punk prior to 1990 is accepted under the umbrella of punk really I cant think of any exceptions right now but there are some i think, lol.) There are different genres. Some bands drifted more towards "new wave" some to Oi, thrash, hardcore or anarcho-punk and post-punk which later became known as gothic.
My favorite sort of punk is the random screaming and banging type you speak of. I love that description! ;D
Shit, have I just posted 3 times in a row?

Fair enough, thanks to both. And you can totally have the banging screaming stuff - I really hate it. Love me some Ramones though, and of course the Clash... guess you'd call it musical punk? :D
K is really into punk, made me watch that SLC Punk movie and such. I can't help it, the fashion statement just really irritates me. Mohawks look stupid to me, and the punk haircuts and wardrobe aren't independence, they're just another kind of uniform. I guess I just don't get it.

hahah slc punk... i remember my friends and i waiting months in high school for that movie to come out.
and sh0t- re: rollins/pennywise... ahhh, yes... same here. + nofx/bad religion. political punk that actually made you feel like you meant something while you sang it... I also discovered System of a Down at this same time. Funny how much music can influence you... if I hadn't gotten so into the political side of it all, I don't think I'd be doing what I am today.

Yeah the uniformity of punk is laughable in some ways now, on the other hand I still love seeing mohawks and studded jackets etc. I guess it gives us a feeling of belonging and having the same sort of tastes and attitudes as each other without having to discuss it all. Its like a silent code although we are certainly not all the same by any means. Plus silly dress and hair cuts are fun of course ;)
That look is not my thing these days - I love the fact that when I go to punk gigs or hang out I dont look stereotypically punk. I dont look like anyone else least of all punk rock. For me punk was (partly) about doing whatever you felt like it and not giving a fuck if you were different or got laughed at and it still is.
I dig some of the more musical bands too, and The Ramones without a doubt were brilliant (another one of my alltime favorite gigs) Slower more tuneful punk just doesnt grab me in the same way as hardcore and grind does thats all :)

^I'm 35, so I was 5 in '77. I got into everything around 83-84 when I was 11 or 12. I liked a little bit of everything. That being said, quite often when I see youngins at a show trying WAY too hard I am reminded of either "Chickenshit Conformist" (best line being "Punk's not dead, it just deserves to die when it's become another stale cartoon") or "Anarchy For Sale" by Dead Kennedys. When you can buy Converse with an anarchy symbol on them for 50 bucks at the suburban mall...that's not very punk. Not at all.
That mindest also makes me feel like an old man most of the time. "Why, when I was your age, we didn't have no Hot Topic, whippersnapper! We made our own outfits!" It's even more hilarious to me now since my son is 13, wearing Misfits shirts and eyeliner and skinny jeans and bondage belts and combat boots.
Anyway. I am officially drunk. Must go feed snakey and clean out her cage while she munches several meeces. I feel like a shower, too. You know, that good ol' cheap wine totally made my headache go away. I might not be saying that in the morning.

Gonna argue on New Wave no Equalling punk here.
New Wave was punk origianlly, just repackaged in the 1980s as a way for a reocord label to get their artists played. Also, I would go on to say that alot of 1990s alternative was really another generation of punk.
Blondie, on the otherhand, did start out as semi-punk, but, sold out.

The 90s were when things started to get ugly IMO ;D
There were some good bands though!
I found this clip someones made "What is real punk and what is not?" Its sort of shitty but Im liking it at the same time. Put side by side the two different things seem even more starkly different than I thought ;D

That clip was funny, sorta sad that you have to spell out what punk is to some people. I had the benefits of working with / interviewing the guy who brought punk to the US.
One thing that he said that always stuck with me was this: The Sex Pistols started punk, the Ramonies perfected punk, and the Clash made it popular.
Punk isn't just 3 chord rock, its the base of rock and roll, Guitar, drums and having something to say.
In pop-culture if you look at it, there is usually either a back-lash against what was popular (Lillith fair vs Britnes Spears), or the polar opposites are popular at the same time (punk vs disco).
-alas I'm writing cuz I left my lights on in my car last night, and waiting for the damn battery to recharge so I can leave ;D

Dear lord! It's $1 per song at the rack, people. You work in finance. You're from London. You have a nice starched shirt on. Why can't you grasp this? Why? Are you deliberately being an asshole, and if so, why do you feel the need to randomly hurt strippers' feelings? It's embarrassing to have three blokes at the rack who aren't tipping, don't you realize that?
