The one and only time I got my way with a carrier-which-shall-not-be-named (just kidding! I will never fail to announce my undying enmity for Qwest) I had to get the BBB, the Oregon Attorney General, and the FCC involved.
I just kept adding consumer advocacy groups until Qwest gave in. It was fun. Like reverse Jenga. And the whole process only took 3 months!

That's what those pics are for - laughing! I bleached my hair out when I broke up with my control-freak ex and decided it was kind of fun for a while. I never had to pay for a drink at a bar and my hair started all kinds of fun conversations! :D
And you haven't seen me enough to say for sure whether I'm beautiful or not! :P So come to NJ to find out!!

Heh. Your words seem to help my point. First you say that New Wave started out as punk, then you can't even bring yourself to say that Blondie was punk, just "start(ed) out semi-punk", whatever that is, then changed as they became popular.
Admit it, G-Real! Blondie was not punk!
(Adding a big ol' smiley to show that my fangs aren't bared and this is all in good fun: ;D )
Oh, and good morning, SW!
I'll reply this way, Bliondie was punk, the same way Green Day was punk.....it they got popular...though Greenday's rise and Blondie's sell-out are 2 completely different things...

Thats cool!
My son was born in 1991 and by no means did I encourage him to get into punk rock either, but he and a whole bunch of his friends are too. They know way more than I do about the bands I listen too, and hes introduced me to a few i missed along the way too. I think its really cool :)
No one would care so much if the original type of punk rock had died and there were no people into it left around, but its still obviously very strong and it always has been and always will be a very different thing.
Now, I wonder - do people who were into the orignal R&B feel the same way? ;D
i'm only a year or so older than you, but i LOVE the 70s and 80s punk and oi and hardcore bands. honestly, you're missing out!
anyway, isn't it important to know what's come before? i mean it's important to know where the bands that you listen to take their inspiration from?

Youre wondering about something thats not entirely correct.
Ive never really liked saying what punk is or what it isnt because pre-90s it was splitting hairs. For the hell of it though given my post 90s rage I shall attempt to define punk, but this is by no means gospel and is slightly tongue in cheek... :)
A rather long post about punk according to me :P
Punk is thinking for yourself and having the guts to say what you think / stand up for yourself regardless of whats considered to be cool by the people around you or the rest of the world. Punk is not being afraid to be different and not intentionally doing something for the purpose of fitting in or looking cool.
Punk is having a social awareness and a set of values, although sometimes its just about being drunk obnoxious and wasted.
Punk is a lifestyle based on the above to varying degrees. Some people completely drop out of society, others might just squat or dumpster dive or shop consciously. For some its living quite a mainstream life but just about thinking for ones self and being assertive. For others its just about being drunk, obnoxious and wasted... Punk is knowing what "fuck the system" and "DIY" means.
Punk is loud rowdy, chaotic, fun, dirty, beautiful, ugly, rude, smelly and often drunk. Punk is having no money but scraping up a few coins with your mates and getting drunk on goon. Punk is having friends that resemble GG Allen but also Crass and some that dont resemble anyone else at all. Punk is running up to a car and gobbing through the window or kicking a dent in the door after someone inside had yelled out "get a hair cut!" but punk is also helping old ladies carry their shopping. Punk is having a lot of things to sing "fuck you / that / off" about and a number of people to call cunts. Punk are bands that say "Copy our music, its free!" and having a music collection that consists of copied music and albums with photocopied covers saying "pay no more than $X". Punk is never hearing the music you like when you go to the mall or out to any "normal" type of hang out. Punk is shaving your mates head in the mall with a cheap razor and putting their mohawk up using soap soaked in a puddle. Punk is also starting to shave your mates head and then going "Fuck this, lets go to the pub and Ill finnish it later." Punk is knowing that "Now thats punk!" is a ludicrous and ironic statement but often true all the same. Its understanding that "Thats hardcore!" is usually something you exclaim "OMG, no way, really?" to like the time a friend fried his testicles on a stove top. Punk is not being phased by the pong of armpit. Punk is waking up in the morning (maybe having slept in the gutter or in a park or on a floor) after a huge night and starting again without looking in the mirror or showering and no one thinking thats unusual, and punk is also knowing that between you and your friends you have endless hours worth of funny stories revolving around vomit, piss and poo. /:O ;D
Punk isnt pretty - though its beautiful.
Punk isnt a trend.
Punk isnt in the charts.
Punk isnt found in most shops.
Punk doesnt smell nice.
The end.
Oops, I missed one - Punk is being secretly glad that emo got ripped off by the mainstream too because you never understood how the original whingey whiney emo bands felt they were part of the punk scene in the first place d-:
Now, off to the chiropractor and then Brisbane...
I never understood the whole "Well that's not REAL punk". Um, I thought many punks didn't want to be put into a box stereotypically, so why such a struggle to put themselves into one?

i don't know what you think my friends and i are like, but a whole lot of what you just posted there sounds exactly like us. last night my mates who play in a dirty punk band picked me up from work. they smell, they drink too much, they have no money, they're loud and rude and obnoxious and they just do not give a fuck, and the whole car ride home i listened to one of them tell a story about how he once shit his pants.

Now, I wonder - do people who were into the orignal R&B feel the same way? ;D
Ooh, I can jump in here! Yes I do. Being from Memphis, I grew up with what used to be called "race music" in my blood. I have a deep emotional connection to the revolution that started in backwater West Memphis bars before it spread to Stax and then forked off to Sun Studio and Detroit. I was getting weepy to the Temptations when other Southern suburban white kids were listening to (ugh) Tom Petty and Poison. My radio was permanently set to the R&B station. But around the mid-nineties, R&B gave way to modern commercial rap, most of which has very little to contribute. I think the last genuine R&B act was probably Bell Biv Devoe or Boyz II Men. It's really sad to turn on a so-called "black music" station these days and hear the same repetitive grunting that replaced a community revolution. R&B wasn't just music, it was political and it tore down barriers and united us as a nation.
I think punk probably picked up where R&B and rock & roll left off.

oddly you say that, because alot of poeple US punk movement felt that Rap was the black-culture's punk, and therefore alot of early acts played at clubs liek CBGBs

I ignore music genres equally. Too concerned with my dinner!
Which was! Gourmet-ish mac n cheese. I knew I wanted sauteed onions and bacon in it but I didn't know I was out of boxed stuff, so I really did end up making it from scratch. I melted many cheeses (predominantly swiss) with milk and butter, poured it over the cooked penne, covered with the bacon/onions, and sprinkled the top with a bread crumb/basil/parmesan cheese crumble. Baked until totally gooey. Ate too much.
I made enough for two but there's nobody to share it with me. :(
