^^ Schedule whatever you have to take place at a Yum Cha restaurant.

I loved this one Place in Box Hill, they did Yum Cha to order all day long. So you could go in order how ever much you wanted... and even get it take away... dam I miss the Big M City.

LJ, the secret to fried chicken is an egg batter. If you don't keep kosher like me, you can do even better with buttermilk. For the egg batter, thin a beaten egg with just a little water (about a tablespoon) or buttermilk (two or three tablespoons), and give the chicken a few seconds to really soak it up before rolling it in the dry crumbs and immediately dropping it into the grease. Make sure the grease is deep enough - it should come to about halfway up the sides of the chicken - and only do two or three pieces at once. The best Southern fried chicken I've had uses slightly-crushed corn flakes for the dry coating, mixed with chili powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. If you've never had corn flake chicken, try it! It's amazing. And vegetable oil makes the best fry-grease, but make sure it's popping hot.

Ooh! I can't wait for that!

Here's my all-time favorite Southern comfort food... corn casserole. I will eat myself sick on this stuff, and it's easy as all hell. It goes really well with greens and blackeye peas.

1 can corn, drained
1 can cream corn
2 eggs
2 Tbsp flour (whole wheat is best but any flour works)
2 Tbsp sugar
Dash pepper
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350 F. Beat eggs in a mixing bowl; mix in flour, sugar, and pepper. Stir in both cans of corn, and add milk. Stir until well mixed.

Pour melted butter into 8x8 casserole dish. Pour in the corn mixture (the butter will cover the bottom and wash over the top a little). Bake 30-40 minutes or until it's golden on top and looks like cornbread. Serve, and try not to eat the whole pan in a sitting.

It really is. I made some the other night when I was having all that family drama, and ate half the pan (and I'm not usually a binge eater). It's just so comforting and so delicious. It also takes about five minutes to put together and then it just bakes for a half-hour or so; it's probably the easiest comfort food on the planet. The pepper, BTW, is totally optional. I especially love the corners because of the baked-on butter. :yummy:

Honey-Sesame BBQ Chicken Wings

2 lbs chicken wings (I like to use wingettes), clean and dry
1/4 C. honey
3 Tbs. oyster-flavor sauce (I know, I know... seafood... deal with it :P)
3 Tbs. hoisin sauce
2 Tbs. conventional, American bbq sauce
2 Tbs. ketchup
1 Tbs. sesame oil
1/4 C. soy sauce
1/2 tsp. garlic powder or 2 Tbs. crushed garlic
1/2 tsp. pepper
chili oil or crushed red pepper flakes to your liking

(Honestly, I'm just guessing at the amounts, I never measure anything)

Combine everything but chicken in a big ziploc bag. Squish it up really well so everything is combined. Add chicken. Marinate up to 24 hours. Pour into foil-lined baking pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 40 mins, turning once and basting with sauce. Voila!

There's plenty of the bbq sauce left over for dipping. Just be careful because the sauce bubbles up as you bake it, keeping the chicken moist despite the high temp and length of cooking. You can adjust the recipe depending on how much sauce you want left over and how much chicken you want to make.

It makes a decent amount of sauce, but you can always double the recipe for more sauce. I've done it, and it's soooooooooooo yum with extra sauce.

I've never tried it without the oyster sauce. I just checked the ingredients on the Lee Kum Kee stuff I've got and it lists oyster extracts like half-way down the ingredients list. Do you have an allergy or just not like seafood?

I love seafood. However, shellfish is banned to Jews; I don't keep strict kosher, but I don't generally eat nonkosher animals and I don't mix meat and dairy. I can have fish (if they have fins and scales) but oysters are verboten. In the interests of full disclosure, about once or twice a year I cheat for shrimp, because shrimp are DELICIOUS!

But something like oyster sauce isn't really worth breaking kosher for... I'll just leave it out and see how it goes. I'm sure it'll be just as good.

And yeah, I'm sure soymilk and margarine would work just as well!

Yea, it should be fine. Oyster sauce is like... salty/sweet/smoky flavored. Maybe like a mesquite bbq sauce would help to simulate that kind of flavor.

And yeah, I'm sure soymilk and margarine would work just as well!

Yay! I am going to break the bank grocery shopping this weekend! hehe

i have *never* in my life met a man who is more petty, childish, and drama queen-irific than the idiot who i thought i liked for a millisecond. seriously. it is honestly a good thing my shoes were already put away and my bag closed because if they had still been on the floor in front of me there is a very good chance they wouldve been headed for his head after he made yet another ridiculous comment (meant to rile me up, of course, and yeah i know i shouldnt have given him what he wanted). it would be worth it to find a new club to see him get knocked in the head with a clear platform heel.

hungover for the first time in WEEKS. went out last nite with my best friend, had sooooooo much fun! but unfortunately there was some stuff going on that made it really uncomfortable for about a half hour. And during that time we decided that it would be better to just drink.

you can get pretty damn drunk in a half hour. Lemme tell ya...

Guy i'm talkin to in Iraq is supposed to come home in less than 2 weeks. Found out yesterday that he's thinking of staying over there for 7 more months. Don't know what to think/feel about this...

All of this talk of food has made me hungry. I like the idea of a forum for just food. But making a recipe thread would probably be easiest.

I printed up all the recipes shared, I'm struggling to find new interesting things to cook for my fiance. Last night i made what he calls tuna nooda casserole. Hes been saying it all night, he said it was awesome, i didn't try it because i had a migrain from hell and weird tummy pains. I ended up going to bed at around 8 pm and waking up super hungry at 400 am. I finally went downstairs around 430 after chatting with the man for awhile (he always wakes up when i do for some reason) I ate salad and bread. I have been craving french baguettes big time!! I can eat a whole one munching all day. MMMM this baby LOVES carbs! I cant wait till i find out the sex on october 3rd. If its a boy we are calling him Tristan if its a girl we are calling her Layla Ashley. I think its a girl.

I have to go work at a restraunt. 1 day a week...and thats today. 1 day a week that I dread! Its horrible. Stripping has made me hate this normal job too much! Its so boring...and for what, maybe 30 bucks? Its my bf's parents, and they just lost a bunch of staff to college and such, so I do it to help them out, so its not like I can really quit. Its not like I can explain to them that when I waitress now and people piss me off it takes every ounce of self control not to put them in their place...because at the club I can. She thinks I waitress everyday...at another waitress...so it would seem kinda odd when I say "I can't do this anymore waitressing makes me want to vomit nowadays." I have to leave in 10 minutes, oh poppycock.>:(

Ummm, he knows what you look like? And he'd rather stay in a war zone than come home to you? That's beyond odd.sometimes there are issues that one has to deal with there. it could be he has a bunch of freshies that need his guidance, he figures he makes more difference there than stationed states-side, etc. i don't think it's an issue with hannah but rather something he needs to deal with himself.

all kidding aside, i'm sure facing random mortars, APM's, snipers, and general BS is still a lot more dangerous than having issues with a SO back home.

imo, let him know you want him back and leave it at that. he has to make decisions and worry about things on a daily/constant basis that none of us do.

-There's a brand of microwavable Indian food that my grocery store carries that is comparable/better than several restaurants I've been too. Palak paneer for MrsC, Malai Kofta for myself. Yum. Now if I only had some hot buttery naan and a little dish of raita...

-One of my cats, Monty (or Monkey as he is usually called), has something wrong with his left eye. The first vet visit, I thought it was probably a scratch from romping with the other two. We got eyedrops and all that, but they made it even more gummy and yuck. Now they think he might have an allergy to something and want to run some tests. Yay. As I am typing this, he's flopping around on the computer desk, meowing, and he almost knocked the lamp over smashing is face againt the shade. Doofus. He's giving me this one-eyed stare that's hilarious.

-My GM will be back tonight. It's his first night back since he went to the Expo in Vegas. Tonight is also our monthly amateur night which is always a crazy mobscene. I'm wondering if this one will be, since this last couple of weeks has just flat-out sucked. Hmm.

-Why is it the mailman always comes at around 10 in the morning, unless I am expecting a package? Then he ALWAYS comes right after I have to leave for work. It's a small thing, but it annoys the hell out of me.

-I'm going to give Yek's sweet potato dish a dry run and see how the fam likes it. They LOVE sweet potato souffle, but I have to put the marshmallows on top.

Wooo Indian grub is ready.

I so hate our maintenance guys. They are loud in the am and ask stupid questions, like 'oh, did you just wake up?' No, I'm just half-nude and smeary-faced all the time.
