My super is awesome. He came over and lit the pilot for us. At 9:30 on a Friday night. And he hung out to chat football with us for a few minutes and tell us how awesome we are. I'm so glad we moved here.

Hugs to Hannah. Big ones.

09-07-2007, 08:32 PM
Thank you! I've never actually done claymation myself but the principles are pretty simple, and it seems like the right way to start with kindergarteners. What the hell, I'll start the eighth graders on it too. Everybody gets to have the Playdoh-stinky hands!
I've never designed a whole curriculum before. This is going to be interesting but what the hey. The whole point is to make it fun; it doesn't matter if none of the projects are any good. I wish I'd had the opportunity to fart around and experiment like this when I was a kid. My college films would've been much better because I would've had all that learning and all those mistakes out of the way. It worked for Robert Rodriguez and Steven Spielberg - they were making movies as little kids.
Maybe I should start them out showing videos or something.
I've never taught an elective before. The school director said my best approach to discipline was to warn the kids ahead of time that misbehavior will eject them from my class, and they can go do extra math homework instead. Muahaha. When I've taught little kids before, they didn't want to be in my class and I had to keep them there, so this will be refreshing!

You could have a film festival at the end of the semester & everything! Make it a party! With a little red carpet & every- ok, I'm getting carried away. But still, if the projects are looking good, why not have a little event to invite parents and other teachers too? Schools always love things that get the parents involved beyond just dragging them into conferences, so that'll make the school itself appreciate you, I think.
I have a feeling you're going to be really good at this!

^^^ I LOVE this idea. Must file that away for the end of term! Cookies and punch and a little film festival, noncompetitive of course. Thanks for the idea.
I have to stop swearing so much before I let loose with the f-word in front of a bunch of kindergarteners, who will of course all go home and proclaim that Ms. Yek Said Fuck. I really have a problem with cussing so I need to learn to knock it off right fucking now.

Hang out with some Mormons. ;D I know I've gotten a lot better about cussing unconsciously after spending a lot of time with one branch of my family. I even say "Oh my gosh" when I'm nowhere near 'em, now.
I draw the line at "Oh my heck", though. As my Mormon half-bros would say, "What the crap?!?"

so this just freaked me out a bit. read my horoscopes for today and Saturday...crazy how accurate it is.
Today(friday):
If you are waiting for all the hectic energy of your life to pass away so you can make time to spend more time with the people you love, stop waiting! The fact is, that is simply not going to happen -- you have to make the time, and you have to make it today. Luckily, some flexibility will enter your life today in the form of someone who wants to lend you a helping hand. If you can reorganize a few things, you can schedule in some quality time. Make it a regular event if you can.
Saturday:
If there has ever been a perfect time to stop and take stock of your situation, it is today. A lot has been going on in your life, and you really haven't given yourself enough time to get used to the changes that have been happening -- and it's important that you do as soon as possible. Not everything is as it seems. The faster you can adjust to the realities, the faster you will able to grab a new opportunity that is hovering just outside of your universe right now.
Seriously that surprised me. Normally my horoscopes are kinda-sorta accurate. leaning more towards no...but these seem to explain my life so much right now.
i can't figure out if i'm sleepy or if i'm bored. figuring that out will decide what i'm doing in a few minutes. Either go to sleep or go upstairs, open a bottle of wine and watch a movie

Rose, I don't know any Mormons and I don't think they'd be too thrilled if a foul-mouthed stripper showed up at the temple just to hang out and cuss a little less. Sounds like fun to try though! }:D
Maybe I should move to Colorado City, AZ.

Just watch for some pairs of innocent-looking young missionaries in short-sleeved white button-down shirts with black nametags reading "Elder So & So". Next time they're in your neighborhood, don't close the blinds and hide - invite 'em in for punch and cookies! See if you can subtly corrupt 'em . . . like drop hints about your . . . alter ego. Hee hee hee. (Really, they're always such genuinely nice kids.)
(Speaking of: Did you see the documentary "New York Doll", about Arthur "Killer" Kane, formerly of the (famous glam band) New York Dolls? He converted to LDS and completely committed to it for the remainder of his life, which he spent working for the church in your area. Wonderfully done! I think you'd appreciate it with your film background.)

I really wish we got Mormon missionaries around here. I'm very interested in Mormonism (not to be one, just academically interested) and I've read a lot of books about it, and I'd love to have the missionaries in for coffee just to talk about stuff. I would love to hear their perspective on some things, and not in a bitchy hostile way, I'm interested. But they don't come around here. There's a huge temple over on Santa Monica, but I guess the missionaries feel that urban touristy Hollywood is a lost cause. They're probably right. A shame.
I did have a Mormon roommate a couple of years ago, sweet girl from Provo whose family came over in the original wagon train with Brigham and Joe in the flesh. She came out to Hollywood with no money, nothing but her sweet self and bad teeth, destined to be an actress. She wasn't a bad actress either, but she was homely and a late-twenties virgin who refused to do any nudity or kissing, so she didn't get much work, and she never paid the rent. Total sweetheart, but she had to go after a few months. Last I heard she was happily married and pregnant, back in Provo.
The movie sounds good. I'll look for it.

I had a great ride today... I LOVE angeles crest!!!
Here are my friends attempting to break the sound barrier on the straight at the bottom of the twisties (i would have joined them had my brake pads not been shot.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INKqPtrdWWI
One guy hit 167. hehe. I was super proud of myself, though, because I'm becoming a really good canyon rider, and people have been really surprised that a relatively new chick rider is smoking a lot of the guys at the back of the group. (well, DUH, cuz she has something to prove!!!) I'm also noticing that my body position is MUCH less stiff than many, and that I stay off the brakes, while people much more experienced than I have developed some bad habits (you are NOT supposed to brake in the canyons if you can avoid it... it's all done by up/downshifting and throttle control.)
Look how beautiful it is!! mmm i love california, when i actually get out into the gorgeous parts.

I have read all about the Cumorrah pageant and the birth of Mormonism! Like I said, for a non-Mormon, it's really silly how much I read on this stuff but I find it very interesting. It's all Jon Krakauer's fault. I read Under the Banner of Heaven, and I happen to have an unrelated but tangental interest in polygamy and the history of nonmonogamous cultures, so I was sort of off from there.
Provo is about an hour south of Salt Lake City, and the home of Brigham Young University. It's an adorable town but I've never seen so many kids in my life, and you have to get a membership to the bar before you can get a drink anywhere (and no booze with your meal at the restaurants). I felt horribly guilty when I went for a cup of coffee in the morning, and after the bar experience I was sort of surprised there was coffee at all.
Can't... stop... eating... the cookies...

Dude, there is one Starbucks in town - and in fact, I think it's technically over the Orem border. I'm there all the time when I visit. It's like the refuge of the damned.
Also? Trying to drink 3.2 beer and get any sort of buzz? You just get bloated & tired. Like I feel right now, in fact, though without any beer to explain it. Gotta hit the hay soooon . . .

I actually like the Utah baby beers, especially the Polygamy Porter. I bought it because the packaging was funny and I wanted to bring it home and show everyone, and I was surprised at how much I actually liked it. I'm not a beer fan but it tasted pretty good and didn't give me a beer-buzz, it was just slightly relaxing. I would buy it here if they had it.
That's funny about the Starbucks.
When I had the Mormon roommate, she needed some furniture and I had stuff in storage, so I told her she could have it if she'd rent the truck and find some boys to haul. So one morning we got the truck, and four strapping young men from the temple came over for breakfast before we headed to the storage facility. We served up eggs and turkey sausage and all that kind of stuff, and as I poured myself a cup, I cheerfully announced, "Who wants coffee?"
I KNEW BETTER! I just forgot. It's so deeply ingrained in my Southern being that you offer coffee to breakfast guests no matter what! Everyone in the room just stared at me while I turned pink and gave a nervous giggle, and then they all just smiled politely and said, "No, thank you." They even acted happy that I'd asked. Mormons are just so damn effing polite. I could never be one.
RoseWhite
09-07-2007, 10:35 PM
Hahaha! Too perfect.
Those Mormon lads are truly as helpful and polite as they come. It baffles me. They'd probably throw down their jackets over a mud puddle for you to walk over it if the situation arose, just like cartoon characters. (They might even offer to carry you over the puddle if it didn't create a, let's say, carnally tempting situation with the contact it'd require.)
Mormons are just so damn effing polite. I could never be one.
BUT LOOK! You're already making progress with the cussing! "Effing" instead of "fucking"! SEE? And that's just from TALKING about the Mormons! Praised be Joseph Smith . . .
Nighty night, all.

Sorry to hear you say this, but I understand, and I have known many dancers who felt this way. It's a brutal business, when it comes down to it. All I can say is try to ignore the nastier aspects of it and get into the dancing. Ask for angry girl music, sometimes this well help you. I have seen pissed off dancers bank from putting their frustration into the music and the dance.
Maybe you could get some other kind of job or business and dance fewer nights?

Much like Sxybrat, I was raised Mormon as well. My mother is from Cedar City. I went to seminary before school, I held the priesthood, etc. Oh yes. I stopped going when I was...I'm going to say 16-17. I've mentioned it a few times but I do find myself defending Mormonism a bit...people are really uneducated about it.
-There's a new movie out...Terrence Stamp, Jon Voight. It's about the massacre that the church denied until recently.
