OK only one person has brought up the very obvious question....why do you want to keep your cash in a safe? Other than leaving it lying around, that is about as unsafe a practice a I can imagine. A bank is insured against losing your money, and will pay you interest to let them borrow it. Keeping it in a safe rather than a bank account is like keeping a plant in the shade...it's not gonna grow and you might lose it.

;D My friend said the same thing to me & called me a "radical." People have lots of reasons for hiding cash & not wanting it in the bank (like Melonie pointed out, bail money, or getting bargains for paying cash on the spot.)

"We have our reasons."

How sad is it we work in a perfectly legal job where we need to save cash bail money? :(

"Life's not fair"

I also learned this mentality from growing up in a bad neighborhood- people are f*cking shiftless. We had firewood and watermelons stolen off the porch. Really! & The bank is never your friend unless you already HAVE money.

... well, not as sad as being bogusly busted on a friday night and spending all weekend in jail because you can't make cash bail and your local lockup won't accept a check or credit card ! Many courts will NOT accept anything but cash, nor will many bail bondsmen in the case of a prostitution or lewd conduct charge.

* Get yourself over to the Post Office & convert your money (in increments under $500) to money orders...store the M.O. & receipt separately so if you lose one you still have the other.

I thought of doing this, but then what? Can you cash it out somewhere other than at your bank?

1. Banks where I live close at 4 pm. I don't get up in time. Hence, my stash grows and grows and grows until I drag my tired ass out of bed and make a deposit. I need to keep my hard-earned money safe until then.

2. I have a stash of bail money for my roommate to find in case of an arrest.

3. If I lose my wallet and all my cards with it, I have some money to get me by until I, again, can drag my ass out of bed and make a withdrawal or get replacement cards. I do not have an ATM card.

Check cashing places. They tend to do payroll advancement too.

My point was that it was pretty pathetic we have to do any of this... I mean, the above wouldn't happen if we didn't get busted for perfectly legal shit anyway.

This incident was what prompted me to invest in the el-cheapo WalMart safe and keep a 'throw-away' $200 in it. If someone ever does attempt to rob me under threat of violence, I can put up some token resistance and then comply with the burglar's direction to open up the el-cheapo safe in my bedroom. If he complains about there only being $200 in the safe, well I just made a bank deposit / just came back from a holiday / whatever. With $200 in hand and the satisfaction that he has successfully forced little ol me to open up my safe and give him 'all' of my cash, the odds of him suspecting the existance of a second safe with lots more cash in it let alone sticking around even longer in order to search for a second safe are extremely remote.

Same situation applies to a burglar, who is going to quickly find my el-cheapo bedroom safe and waste time cracking it open to get at the 'throw away' $200 without giving any thought or spending additional time searching for a second safe with lots more cash in it. Basic psychology ... robbers and burglars are expecting to find a safe with cash in it, so I provide one for them to find rather easily to meet their expectation !

Also if I am ever robbed or burglarized, if need be (for insurance coverage of breaking and entering damage, for example) I can make a police report that $200 was taken from my el-cheapo bedroom safe without raising any eyebrows - after all I just made a bank deposit / just came back from a holiday / whatever !

I don't know you Melonie, but I think I love you. This advice is priceless.

Dang I'm gonna start making "diversion" safes out of all the empty shit lying around my house and sell it on ebay like all those other people haha. I think you can make your own pretty easily. Those ideas are great.

Just a thought ... if you're involved in anything illegal don't use the US Postal system for anything including Postal Money Orders. The Postal system can be as aggressive as the IRS in pursuing illegal activity. Use FedEx or some other private carrier to mail stuff and private money services for money orders.

As to my boobs being a 'diversion' safe, that leads to a funny story (but one that's a very real pain for me). EVERY TIME I fly, the airport security people figure that I'm trying to smuggle something in my bra/boobs. After umpteen trips to the side room to be 'strip searched', the last time it happened I was running late for my flight. Rather than having to 'waste' an extra 20 minutes being 'strip searched' again, when I saw the security guys getting that suspicious look on their faces while staring at my chest ... I pulled up my blouse, took a deep breath, and said 'nothing here but USDA approved, boys ..." They responded 'yes ma'am we can definitely see that!" and passed me right through the security line !

How do you know it wasn't just a "struggling to keep from pitching a tent in front of hundreds of people" kind of look?
