...I feel like I'm talking in circles. :/

I do too. I can dislike grouping people but understand a caution at the same time.

So basically, we're all saying everyone here agrees and were arguing for no reason?

Fabulous!

Blah..

Yup. Isn't that how most threads go?

No...
I think what we're saying here is that she thinks what we're saying is true, sensible and accurate, but that she wants to discriminate anyway because she finds it appealing normatively.

Argh, this thread was a giant circle...

At least the other arguments end with unicorns and ponies and trail off... mine just goes back to where it started. o.o;

No, I'm saying I don't like to group people, but I can understand why they are being grouped. Ok I'm done, like Lillith said, this is just circles. I stated my opinion, take it or leave it.

Okay - I might be seriously misunderstanding something here - I may have kneejerked. I assumed that you were saying that you agreed with the policy - that is that you thought the policy should be there - to put it as grossly as possible. Now I'm thinking you might have been saying that you intuitively relate the policy, but see why it should be replaced?

There are some really stupid restrictions on that. I used to donate blood regularly ever since I was 17, and now they won't take my blood because I once paid a prostitute for sex and I've had sex with a man who had sex with another man ONE TIME many years ago as part of a threesome (he is straight). And they wonder why there's always a blood shortage.

^ And from what I remember, your number for sexual partners was shockingly low.

Yup, my friend in high school could never donate blood cuz she lived in England for a couple years in the late 80's.

Lilith, just to throw this out there: I wouldn't consider what you do "prostitution." I mean, you're putting on a lesbian show over and over again with the same girl in front of people for money, right? To me that's just a sex-show, which is totally different. Prostitution to me would be if you were fucking random girls or guys for money....

Ugh, I went in to get my blood drawn a while ago, but I backed out because I was chicken of the needle, I was at work, AND because my mom has hep C and I've never been tested. When I tried to withdraw the lady encouraged me they test the blood later anyway, but w/e...

MAIN point! The thing that really grinds my gears is all the questions about being a male having sex with other males (it does NOT specify unprotected)! For all other sex questions, condom/no condom is specifically asked.

<macho man voice>well you know SexKitten... only gay men get any STD's... condom or not... it's like a proven fact somewhere</macho man voice> pfft yeah right, to anyone who thinks that way... I bite my thumb at you and roll my eyes. If I may have a Clueless moment here - As if!!

I know this is kinda off topic, but I was denied because when I went to give blood I was 109 pounds. You had to be 110. This was also early in the morning and all I'd had to eat was cereal.

the weight thing seems odd to me but the food thing for sure, I guess they have a min amount that they want to take and if you're under 110 you wont be able to safely produce w/o health risks for yourself. As for the food one thats easy, they don't want anyone fainting... (altho imo seeing people faint is really funny 'cause they do it, come to and go "I think I'm going to faint" sorry hun, you already did, and you missed it!!)

It wasn't defined as prostitution... they said 'sex worker'. Was I one or had I engaged in acts with one? Yes.

Just for fun, I have another retarded non-blood-giving story:

When my late fiance (sp?) was in the last stages of his lymphoma, he needed platelets. Gallons of them. Everybody he knew, as well as everybody they knew, was donating platelets for him. I went in to donate and was told I was iron deficient. So I went home and drank a bunch of prune juice and ate a bunch of dried fruit and other high-iron foods. Yes, you can imagine how I felt the next day. But I still staggered back to have the platelets drawn.

So I sat down for the interview. Again. And was denied.

The reason: My fiance, some 20 years earlier, had used heroin. I had since had unprotected sex with this man. Therefore I was ineligible to donate platelets *specifically to him* . . . . because *I* might give *him* a disease.

I kept asking how they thought I was going to give him something he had not already been exposed to, but they kept saying "that's just policy."

^ Brilliant!!

THAT is a perfect example of the logic I was referring to in my own case!

Oh mt god. His need is not funny but their reasoning for not taking your blood is really (dumb) funny. Thanks for sharing that I needed to smile. btw, I'm very sorry for you loss.

This has always pissed me off.

Last time I read the rules, it said something like "if you have EVER exchanged sex for money or drugs" you can't ever donate blood.

The thing that pisses me off about it is this: Shouldn't they be focusing on BEHAVIOR????

Because, let me get this straight:

~A woman who has had protected sex with a few johns can NEVER give blood, even years later, even after testing clean multiple times.

BUT--

~A chick who has had unprotected anal sex with multiple partners and never been tested for HIV can go ahead and give blood, as long as she didn't get paid for the sex.

WTF????

How does that even make sense? It seems to me that it's just based on stereotypes of sex workers, not on any logical thought.

Why don't they just say,

"Anyone who has ever had unprotected anal sex" or "unprotected sex with greater than X number of partners" can't give blood...?

Or why not just give HIV/Hep C/etc tests on the spot, or accept verified documents that show 2 or 3 clean tests over the last year? Or something that actually makes some sense???

"if you have EVER exchanged sex for money or drugs"

I'll occasionally put a 20 in the waist band of my boyfriend's boxers and say "This means I got you all night and most of tomorrow, right?" and he'll do the same to me:D... I have paid for and gotten paid for sex, sort of, I mean there is money exchanged... I guess I can't give blood. I understand the rules, but I think they can be so silly sometimes...
