^^I get those things at my local place under the name of "Japanese Sweet Balls". I googled it and they looked very similar although they seem to have seasme seeds on them usually.

^ Huh, I've never seen them with sesame.

Omg I just remembered....

Shabu Shabu....!!!

Not the name of those sticky rice balls.. but the shabu shabu style of eating!

OMG DROOL!

^Yeah I don't know if they're the same thing, they look exactly like that yet with little seeds on them. They taste like a thick doughnut or something.

The ones I'm thinking of have sauce on them and taste like compacted riceballs with a sweet tangy sauce... I remember it ending in dori? Or something?

Hmmm tangy, probably not what I'm talking about. If they're sold on the street though by vendors it's very possible that they arn't really mainstream. I've seen this with a lot of road side vendors.

Damnit. :( I bought them in Little Tokyo in LA, a small shop with those red bean cakes sells them too. And I've gotten them at markets before. The sauce is really sticky on the balls and doesn't drip or anything... it's so good. :( Served cold too.

They look like Boa Loy on skewers. Hmm, unsure what those are in Japanese cuisine.

Mitarashi dango!!
http://www.tsuji.ac.jp/hp/dango/mitarashi/img/mitarashi.jpg

上新粉(じょうしんこ)
Jou-Shinko /Rice Flour 200 g
Sugar (white granulated) 50 g
Hot Water about 200 mL
Mitarashi Sauce
醤油(しょうゆ)
Syou-yu / Soy Sauce 2 tbs.
味醂(みりん)
Mirin /Sweet Rice Wine 2 tbs.
Sugar (molasses or dark-brown sugar) 1 tbs.
出汁(だし)
Dashi /Japanese stock 200 mL
片栗粉(かたくりこ)
Katakuri-ko /Potato Starch mixed with water 1 tbs. of powder + 1 tbs. of water
Directions

1. Mix Jou-Shinko and sugar well in a bowl and mix hot water bit by bit using a spatula. When the dry powders disappear, knead the dough well with your hands until it becomes as soft as your earlobe. Please beware against burning yourself by the hot dough.
2. Divide the dough into small dumplings with 1 inch in diameter.
3. Boil a large amount of water well in a pot. Put some of the dumplings into the boiled water and boil them well. Keep boiling 2 or 3 minutes after they rise to the water surface.
4. Pick them up and strain off the water from them. Put the dumpling on a dish. Repeat the boiling process for the rest of the raw dumplings.
5. During boiling the dumplings, mix soy sauce, Mirin, sugar and Dashi stock in a sauce pan and heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves.
6. Turn the heating off and add the mixture of potato starch and water into the sauce pan immediately. Mix them well until the sauce becomes thick.
7. Pour the sauce onto the dumplings, and serve.

Notes & Arrangements

* Please control the amounts of the hot water during kneading.
* You can make 茶団子(ちゃだんご) (Cha Dango) with Matcha. Please mix the powdered tea well with Jou-Shinko and sugar before adding hot water.
* It is also tasty with sweet vegetable paste instead of Mitarashi sauce.
* You can color the dumplings. Please dissolve a particle of colorant into the hot water.
* In the case that someone do not like the smell of Dashi stock (as like that of smoked fish), please use water insted of it. If you are afraid of alcohol in the Mirin, you can evapolate the alcohol from the sauce by boiling well.
* The directions of the full-dress Mitarashi Dango are as follows: Divide the dough of Jou-Shinko and sugar into 4 or 5 masses and boil them very well. Strain off the water and knead them well. Make into dumplings with 1 inch in diameter and stick 5 eaches of them with a bamboo/wood skewer. Bake them on a fire with a metal mesh until they are a little burned. Finally, spread the Mitarashi sauce onto them and serve.

Those look yummy! I'm so hungry. Just read the pie thread too!

I have two great sushi places near where I work. So I go at least twice a week. In fact, gonna head out for lunch soon and get some!

I really gotta start avoiding these food threads!

Sushi is K's absolute favorite food, so we go occasionally. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't go at all. I don't like it. I love the edamame though! When we go to the sushi place, he gets a ton of sushi and sashimi, and I usually get a tofu salad or some kind of teriyaki thing.

The sushi place in our neighborhood does sometimes have sashimi-style seared beef (mostly raw) with a gingery soy dipping sauce and I do love that! I like raw beef but not raw fish.

Oh ok. I wanna try it soooo bad LM, I haven't tried it yet... :(

On a lighter note, I went to my #1 chef today and ate two spicy scallop rolls and he threw in a half of a crunchy Philly roll on the sly. :D

Can someone say big tip?!

Once every week or two, sometimes more. If I had more friends that liked sushi, I'd probably eat it more.Me too!! I'd totally be your sushi buddy when you're in town ;D

3-4x's a week. Half the time I eat at one of my favorite sushi bars, other half I make it myself. It's alot of fun to do, and really easy! :)
I do like the sushi rolls, but my favorite japanese meal is miso soup, a fresh green salad w/yummy miso dressing and a little mix of hamachi, toro, and saba sashimi. With a glass of plum wine, even better.

Ah, but I am lazy! :D

That would require many ingredients that I'd have to purchase...and then prepare. I get exhausted just thinking about it.
