Boxers are great but very prone to heart defects. I simply could not cope with that after Zaine passed away at 5 from cardiomyopathy.
I do remember your dog Embyr. Those puppy photos are soooooooooooo adorable.
I want a puppy right now!!

it might not make you dog decicion, but its cool to see what comes up =)

boxers if brought from a proper breader are screened for heart defects at birth and breaders will not bread with boxers that have had the defects such as hip dysplacia heart mumur and thyroid disease.
It is allways a must to buy from a breader and not a pet shop to avoid these things as much as possible
All dogs have possible health concerns as do humans I guess it is really the research you do on them and what suits your lifestyle.
Im also with embyr you will make a great mum whatever you get :)

Consider a Silky Terrier? My family has one going on 12 years strong. Great little dogs, lots of heart, but stubborn as hell. Takes a lot of effort to train them, but they are loyal and brave. We had one kill a snake one day when my father was walking it. They are also very alert, and bark more than yap. Go with female rather than male, our little male ages ago had a inferiority complex due to his 'mate' a female Doberman... he did love her. If you had a male you'd need a female to keep him company. At least that is my preference.

I have two pit bulls, and I really love them. They are very bright, very sweet doggies. I feel so bad for pits because they get such a horrible rep because stupid people buy them and abuse them and train them to attack people... Terrible! Reality, they are some of the greatest dogs around.

hhhehe actually there was a turn-of-the-century woman who does all sorts of folkloric/children's illustrations with fairies/corgis/kids... we had some of her artwork... There's a legend about corgis that the two somewhat visible "saddle marks" on either side of them were so they could be fairy steeds.... :D here's some of her artwork! hehe MY mom was obsessed with Tasha Tudor...

I agree. And even if you do end up looking for a certain breed they often have waitlists that you can go on so they'll notify you if a certain breed is brought in. Or try an online or local rescue group.

Yep...my parents wanted a West Highland Terrier. But they knew better from living with me for so long to go to a breeder(lol!)...always save a life if you can! They went to the shelter and the guy told them "good luck...we NEVER get those...but we'll let you know" Lo and behold a 1 yr old westie came in just a week later..owner died and the family brought him in. He was a great little dog...perfect for them and my mom (who never really cared for dogs...she was a bit scared of them before they got Luke) is still grieving for him.(they had to put him down about a month ago...he was 16 years old and had health problems they battled for years. The vet finally helped them make the decision when he stopped eating)
The great thing about mixed breeds is you often get the best of the breeds without the health issues that come with many purebreds.
hey Jai,
Thought I would pass on a link that may be of some help to you in choosing a registered breeder in Australia
The site www.dogzonline.com.au will be able to point you in the right direction for pure-bred, ANKC registered dogs.
I highly reccomend this site, I use it all the time as my family shows dogs (siberian huskies, beagles, shiba inus)
Good luck with your decision

what about a boston terrier, so cute and full of personality -
this first link is bound to make you smile and go.. OH NO!
Also, here's a thought - in referance to the pound issue. There are tons of dogs that need good homes, like this.:)
Happy puppy picking!

just remember that Jai is in Australia! The relevent agency would be the local animal shelter (the pound)

I love my weenie dog, and when I had my great dane they were the best of friends. As soon as I'm not working 50 weeks a year, I'm going to go to the nearest great dane rescue to get my little guy another big friend!
Honestly, going to a rescue is a really good idea.

Shame I can't adopt her or any other animal there. I'm only allowed the one cat at my new pet-friendly place. I'm not going to push it (ask to get another animal) until I have prooved myself a good tenant.
Get a shelter dog even if it is a little older. You can still have that special bond you spoke about Jai ;D

it isn't as simple as just getting a male dog and female dog to breed. what about the care of the breeding pair? also will you register yourself or just be 'backyard breeders' ? do you have the space, time and other resources devoted to being a breeder? do you have any experience with breeding? do you have a mentor or someone that can help guide you?
what is so wrong with going with another dog from the shelter?
I'm not passing judgement. These are just the questions I genuinely have...

i have no experiance in breeding. i live in an apartment. obviously, they wouldnt be bred at my place.
i WANT a klee kai, they are beautiful small dogs, perfect for apartment living. i have the money to bring a pair in, i have the time- there is someone home 24/7. i know in the past i have been fickle and undecided on where in the world i want to live and stuff, but several things have since been set in concrete- and i will be staying here for good now. we are about to sign a tenancy lease, and buy furniture- thats commitment. if we put in our order for these puppies, the *might* be here sometime next year- in which case i will have had months to really sort out my breeding knowledge, and we would have brought our property by june 08.
as i said, i would have one dog, and my cousins would have the other. both wuold be well loved family pets, but it would obviously be great to get one, maybe 2 litters out of them. i used to do dog shows as a kid back home, id be interested in maybe doing something simmilar with mine here too. and i would definatly register as a breeder, even if we only done a few litters. i dont want some massive large scale breeding program of 20 dogs or anything. its only 2!!
trust me, i have really thoguht about this. it is full time commitment for the next 20 odd years. i know that.
i just want to see a breed like this brought over here, and no one else has bothered doing it.

one quick last threadjack- the uk has been permantly cancelled- its too cold, and id rather stay in sunny qld :) lol and some other reasons...
jaizine, have you decided on a dog yet?
Jessica, there is a reason why there are no Klee Kleis in Australia! The reason being is that the ANKC hasn't recognised them as a breed.
You can bring them over as pets, but they will not be recognised as a breed in Australia, so they are basically useless for breeding
In fact the first people who will be bringing the first recognised Klee Klei will be the Fields (show dog family who currently show siberian huskies) who are waiting on the ANKC (Australian National Kennel Council) to approve the breed as recognized.
ANKC requires a 10 year breeding history of the particular breed, then they must apply to the KC for approval.
You can bring the dog over as a pet, you can breed them, BUT you will not be able to sell the dogs with papers, which is purposeless if you want to improve the breed (which is the only reason why any one should breed)

oh.
um, well, that makes sence. lol wondered why no one had done it. so even if i brought a bredding pair over, it would be 10years before theyd be a recognised breed. dumb.
i want one. more then anything. guess ill just buy one as a pet then. 10grand for a freaking dog :(
maybe I confused you,
The breed must have 10 years international breeding histroy before they will even consider recognising it as a breed here.
10G for a pet is a bit much, I am sure that there would be a breed in Australia that you like?
mermaidnz
06-10-2007, 12:00 PM
10 years internationally? it has that...i think. ill look in to it tomrrow, but im pretty sure.... the chick who started the breed has been doing so since the late 70s...early 80s. its a registered breed in usa.
hmmm maybe my lil fantasy can come true!! :)
the next best dogs i wanted was the shiba inu and akita. which would mean buying a house, lol, they arent exactly apartment dogs.

I better not tell my bf. He had a siberian huskie and it's his favourite breed of dog. They are so vocal, I have always had quite dogs but huskies are real talkers (not barkers).

jaizine, have you decided on a dog yet?
No, not yet. I had a very busy week at work. Im going looking this week tho!
I am going to visit the RSPCA. The problem is that I will feel sorry for them all and want to bring them all home :'(
I'm leaning towards a pug tho or some X breed like a pugalier or pug X beagle.
Thanks everyone for contributing to this thread. I have learned some new breeds just from reading this thread that I had never heard of.
Breeding dogs costs a lot of money - if you own the bitch. Studding a dog is cheaper and easier. But if you have the bitch you will have to pay lots of vets bills, the bitch needs high quality food whilst pregnant and even supplements, then you have to feed the pups until they get homes.
Also, if there are any complications during the pregnancy or birth of the litter.
It can also be very sad breeding as there are often still born pups or pups that die shortly after being born.
I think it would be rewarding but very hard work.
there are many other rules of why they haven't been imported resulting in them not being in australia. Like i said before, the Feilds family will be the first in australia to have them, and are awaiting the ANKC to approve them so they can import them.
Also, shiba inu's are a great apartment dog making them hugely popular in singapore and japan. I wouldn't reccomend aa male shiba for an indoor dog as they just run amuck, but the female shiba's are like cats. They are very clean breed of dogs! In my families house they have several shiba inu's and both of the females live inside.
Also a trait of the shiba inu is to be very protective and territorial and although they are ok with growing up with other dogs, they despise other pets being bought into their territory!
If you want to know more jess, pm!
Also, jai, why not go for a pure bred pup?

First of all, keeping an akita in an apartment is not a good idea... I trained rescue akitas. Irresponsible people adopt puppies they don't know how to train and don't exercise properly.
If signing a lease is a big commitment for you, there is no doubt in my mind this dog is going to end up in a shelter by the end of that lease....

lucky one, you must have missread me somewhere along the way! id never have a full grown adult akita in an apartment! no matter how big the apartment was, that would be silly!! i was seriously considering klee kais as apartment dogs-which they are very much suited for. they dont seem to get much higher then my knee (for the toy sized breed)
i am tossing up between three dogs- the klee kai, at 10grand a pup to bring over, maybe not at this stage- the shiba inu, or an akita- and buying a house.
so far my partner is more swayed to buying a house and getting an akita. i still have my heart set on the klee kai...but $20k min for a breeding pair is a house deposit. food for thought.
alee, thanks so much for your help on this, i had no idea there was anyone on here experianced with shibas :) they still dont seem to be a huge breed over here.

I have always gone for purebred dogs. I might get a purebred pug but I am open to the idea of getting a X breed.
I would highly suggest a pure bred dog over a cross breed, I have my reasons if you want to know do shoot me a pm!
