View Full Version : Remember when?

I havent read every post so forgive me if I repeat.
I remember record stores and casette tapes. And being PISSED when my brother took one of my fav tapes(I dont even remember what band it was anymore!) and ruining it by pulling all the tape out!
When cameras had FILM and HUGE flashbulbs that you had to plug into the top
When VCR's were incredible technology and the remote had a cord that attatched it to the box
When my TV was black and white with the dials...which inevitably broke and you had to change the channel with pliers
When console TV's were the big deal...kind of like plasmas are today I suppose
When the baddest kid on school got caught...GASP...smoking!! Cigarettes. And everyone predicted he'd come to no good(yeah..I grew up in a small town..even though we were almost walking distance to Philly and many childhood memories are set in the city...I was still fairly sheltered)
I remember when it was not only allowed..but SAFE for me, at 8 yrs old, to wander around the streets of Philly by myself. Same neighborhood last time I was there(about 8 yrs ago) is now crawling with crack dealers, there are needles discarded on the street, gunshots are common to hear and the kids I grew up playing with(who lived next door to my Grandmother) are now dealers(the boys) and a street hooker(their sister Brandi).
I remember when people just ate without worrying how many carbs, trans fats, or whole grains were in their food. When you ate PB&J on Wonder bread...just like everyone else.
When nobody had cell phones and computers took up whole rooms and were touted as a "fad"
And I think I'm the only one who remembers The candy apple news company(kids show out of philly)

Oy. I remember rotary phones and rotary pay phones too. I even remember when, in some places, you could still call someone local (with your same prefix) by just dialing the last 4 digits :O
Captain Kangaroo!
Running to fill up my tank during the gas price wars - price was as low as 49 cents a gallon.
Wonder Twin powers, ACTIVATE!!!
I also rode my bicycle everywhere.
Waiting in line with my parents for gas. Gas rationing, and a reduced speed limit to 55 meant to increase cars' fuel efficiency. My dad couldn't seem to drive 55 and got lots of speeding tickets.
Asking for "regular" at the pump meant an entirely different thing.
It cost 10 cents to mail a letter or use the payphone.
If you were out and about and REALLY needed to call someone, you looked for a phone booth.
A "party line" was not a 900-number type deal.

I remember when...
...there was NO myspace!
Yes folks its true, there was a time when myspace did not rule the internet and 'social circles' had to be created on your own, without clicking 'accept' or 'deny.'

That would be "World Class Track Meet" for use with the "Nintento Power Pad".
I currently have both of those hooked up and ready to go at my house, have for a while, great exercise.
I remember it being called "Track & Field" but I think that was the actual arcade version. Anyway, We both had a Nintendo, but my younger brother got the game and the pad in this case. I recall the long jump, we'd jump up at the appropriate moment, but up onto his bed or off the mat, and then back down, for the extra superhuman jump.
I also remember being really pissed you couldn't shoot the dog in the Nintendo version of "Duck Hunt".
How about "Adventure" for the 2600? Or the "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" for the same system? Good times. How shitty Pac-Man looked when it finally came out on Atari, but we just didn't care?
Someone mentioned "Zork". Ah, yes, ::types in::"Scream"
"AHHHHHHHHHH...Do you feel better?"
My dad had an IBM clone, I think it was AT&T. There was a really ghetto but addicting game called "Jump Man".
I still have a working C64 in a box in the attic. I have the first 3 Zorks, Spy Hunter, and few other games on bigass old floppies somewhere too.
OH! My neighbor friend had this game system, I should just google it but I think it was called Vetrex? Little tiny self contained unit with it's own screen? Every game kinda looked like Asteroids or Tempest, if memory serves.
So, Yes. Wine. Wasabi mayo from Trader Joe's is pretty hot, FYI. G'nite.:D

I remember record stores and casette tapes. And being PISSED when my brother took one of my fav tapes(I dont even remember what band it was anymore!) and ruining it by pulling all the tape out!
Actually when I first migrated to a portable cd player, I missed tapes, always ok quality, no skipping, and if they did get a little ruined, you just used a pencil and put them back together. Although I'd have to say a brother could be worse than the cassette deck chewing the tape.

YES! That's his name. Hmmm...I heard the exact same story about Howie Mandel..I wonder if its one of those "gerbil up the butt" stories that circulated about several celebs...
Mandel has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)[5] and mysophobia (fear of germs)[citation needed] to the point that he does not shake hands with anyone, including enthusiastic contestants on Deal or No Deal, unless he is wearing latex gloves. Instead of shaking contestants' hands when they offer them, he will give the contestants congratulatory gestures such as tapping another's fist with his own fist, or putting his hands on their shoulders. Howie now takes medicine to control his condition and even pokes fun at himself for it. He revealed on The Howard Stern Show on March 24, 2006 that his shaved head is not related to natural hair loss, but to his mysophobia. He stated that the lack of hair makes him feel cleaner.
After Double Dare, Marc decided to move on to more adult television. He landed a job on the Lifetime morning show Our Home. He later co-hosted a talk show with Sissy Biggers for Lifetime called Biggers and Summers. It was on Biggers and Summers Marc realized what cause his need for cleanliness, he had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Marc received treatment for OCD and became the spokes person for the OCD Foundation
Also, Marc Summers wrote the BOOK on OCD: http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Its-Place-Obsessive-Compulsive/dp/1585420484/ref=sr_1_1/002-1629005-4807207?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1183942589&sr=1-1 like, really.

We had the first microwave oven in our neighborhood (around 1978-9) and it was really weird. Family down the street had the first Betamax in the neighborhood the thing had an 8ft. wire to the remote.
I remember 8 track tapes well!
Around 1980-ish a friends dad built a television room in their basement with a 19 inch tv built into the wall. They had an Atari hooked up to it and their family was revered as gods among men.
I remember when cassette tapes were futuristic.
I remember when a friends family got a portable cd player around '83 and kept telling us that more cds would be available in the future. We dismissed them as eccentric goofballs.
Then there was pagers... haha
