I remember when Gummi Bears was a cartoon show first and were a candy second.
My mother used to get Gummi Bears mailed to her from Germany when her Brother was stationed there in the early 1960's! My grandparents liked to go to Europe every other year or so, so I had gummi bears in my christmas stocking for as long as I can remember!
I remember the Sears Wish Book. That would keep me and my brother quiet and in awe of all the toys for hours.
People put their Christmas lights up the week before Christmas and took them down the day after.
You couldn't buy gasoline on Sundays.
Or Alcohol.
(If you couldn't guess I spent part of my childhood in Pennsylvania)
I got spanked in school by the teacher.
When an adult man was nice to a child he wasn't instantly suspected of being a pedophile.
I remember when extras actually cost extra (hence the reason why they are called extras).
The first shopping mall was outdoors. It was a family adventure to go to Lloyd Center and we spent the whole day there. Ditto when other malls started opening up.

Oh, man.
I remember 33's and 45's. The records from your grandparents were 78's.
I remember when stereo was a new hot item.
I remember when color television didn't look so good.
I remember when TV remote controls were new. Just off and on and change channel, and the channels clunked. The channel control was a dial at the front of the TV. I think you still had to adjust volume by hand.
I remember riding all over town on the bicycle. You could just go out and play, and the only rule was to stay in hearing distance. When mom called, you went home.
Before 8-tracks, there were reel to reels, and only the geeks had them.
I remember transistor radios being a cool thing.
I remember when cable TV came to town.
I remember the first American space flights.
I remember the Echo satellite/balloon and its promise for expanding worldwide communications.
I remember the Kennedy assassination, the Tet offensive, and Kent State.
I remember getting our first garbage disposer. And our first dishwasher. And our first microwave. And our first plug-in coffeepot (you used to make coffee in a coffeepot on the stove).
I remember when you could get truly ripe tomatoes.
I remember when strawberry was an odd flavor of ice cream.
I remember when the main source of your food was the neighborhood grocery store.
I remember when drunk driving could earn you a ride home and smoking weed could earn you a couple years in prison.
I remember when people grumbled when pollution controls were put on cars.
I remember riding in a DeSoto.
I remember when "made in Japan" meant "cheap." "Made in China" meant Taiwan.
I remember when the VW Bug and the Honda Civic were the two cars available, new, for under $2,000.
I remember when sidewalks were built away from the curb.
I remember having fights in school without the police showing up. Or even getting in trouble.
I remember "please," "thank you," and "you're welcome" as normal and expected events of daily speech.
I remember when vulgarities were frowned upon in public.
I remember one-speed bicycles with coaster brakes as being normal.
I remember 29 cent gas, and you couldn't pump it yourself.
I remember people being satisfied with a TV, a radio, books, and not taking work home.

^^So you're saying you remember 40 hour work weeks? You guys were lazy! J/K!
Oh, and you still aren't allowed to pump your own gas in Oregon. It's illegal.

I remember Vinyl 33 1/3 LP's, 9-tracks, Captain Kangaroo, Days When My Legs Didn't Creak, Another Unpopular War, 6-cent Coca Colas, and a TV show called "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett" about the lives of a typical American family. However, no one ever did find a Typical American Family where the father was named "Ozzie"

I still have 33/45s AND 78s in my kitchen right now! Heeee.
I remember my parents saying they'd use public transport when gas cost more than milk.
I remember thinking sex was only had "by two people who love each other very much"
I remember when Oxyclean. Literally, didn't they just beat the shit out of us marketing that stuff like a year ago? And now? GONE.
I remember Max Headroom
I remember when you could visit old high school teachers without needing a FBI security clearance.
I remember when Napster first allowed LAN file sharing...while I was at college. HELLO. How did they NOT expect to get trounced huh?
I remember the Yugo. I saw the Yugo. I drove a Yugo. You can't scare me.
I remember when you wanted to get to know your neighbors.
I remember coming home from school a chilling at a friends house and getting reprimanded by his parents when I did something wrong WORSE than I would from mine, and my parents where ok with that.
I remember, in second grade, trying to peek up the sub's skirt.

I forgot to mention.
I remember when Pong first came out. There was one game in town.
I remember when computers had no graphical display, or display period. You typed and printed.

Teddy Ruxpin. And how he looked like Satan.
My borhter had a Teddy Ruxpin, and he was dealthy afraid of it. My dad would put Teddy in bed with my brother while he was sleeping, so when he woke up he'd see it and scream.
My dad also tormented m brother with the Chucky doll...he was such a wuss.
I remember first hearing about computers. My wealthy friend had one, which she described as something wher eyou could talk to the world. She said she'd sow it to me, but every time we tried, we couldn't connect. She said to many people in the world were trying at the same time and we had to wait in line, cause only so many people could do it at once. I was intrigued.....

I remember when people decided to leave SW they would just leave, and not create a thread and hang-around for 6 more months debating why they are leaving...
Kinda foggy but I do recall
- When we kids were expected to stay outside and play and not be under foot
- Making my own Superman figures out of clothes pins
- When playing "army" with my friends was normal behavior
- You could shoot BB guns without someone calling the cops
- Nuclear attack drills in elementary school
- Being scared to death to bring home a "B" on my report card instead of all "A's"
- My mom's wringer washer and clothes hanging on a line in the back yard
- Helping my dad fix the pushmower (actually I just handed him tools)
- Cutting a 1/2 acre neighbors lawn for 2 bucks
- Listening to Bill Cosby albums for hours and laughing my ass off
- Lusting for a jacked up yellow '57 Chevy belonging to an older guy up the street
- My excitement when Sgt Peppers was released
- Thinking making out (kissing) a little bit with my girlfriend was good mileage
- Praying for a high draft lottery number
- Having to stay in the waiting room while my first kid was being delivered
- Making $1.60 an hour and thinking that was pretty good money
- 8-tracks
- My first home computer- a Radio Shack TRS black/white with 16K and 1 floppy

On that note...going out trick or treating by ourselves at 7 or 8 yrs old with no worries.
Then within a year or two...having to have all candy inspected and x-rayed before we were allowed to eat it.
you use to be able to go trick or treating at every house and not worry about getting candy with something put in it.

How about making one's own Halloween costumes with creativity and imagination, rather than purchasing a child-sized replica of a movie character's wardrobe for $59.99?
I remember the year I was an Egyptian... cut neck and arm holes in a pillowcase and drew heiroglyphics around the bottom with a paint pen, and let my mom put a bunch of eyeliner on me. It was much cooler AND cheaper than wearing the exact same store-bought costume as every other kid in class!
krchab99
10-08-2007, 01:13 PM
^^^ oh i know I even rember the cheap plastic costumes with a mask that attached with an elastic band and a cape you would wear that had the charater represented on it you were. They had to be waaay cheaper then the custumes they sell for my kids. And we pay all this money for a custume they can't even wear school to anymore becuse halloween custume parties have been replaced with harvest parties becuse halloween is offenisive to some people. Hell i rember when if a parent had an issue with a holiday party they just did not send there child that day instead of ruining everyone elses good time and make us not celebrate.
Yekhefah
10-08-2007, 01:18 PM
Yeah, I had some Jehovah's Witnesses in my class and they don't celebrate any holidays at all. So when we had class parties, those kids had to go to the library and do homework. It sucked for them but their parents didn't feel the need to rain on everyone else's good time.

And yet, turns out? All the hysteria was for NOTHING, pretty much. (http://www.snopes.com/horrors/poison/halloween.asp) Just like the kidney thieves, the random crazed neighborhood poisoner just . . . never really existed. Other cases were all coincidences and pranks and just plain mistakes. In the case that was the most plausible and famous, the one time it actually WAS Halloween candy - it turns out it was (surprise) the child's own father.

I actually went with him a couple of months back and it was a whole lotta fun. Ironically they play the exact same music in the skate rink as they do in the titty bar.

Oh dude, I totally want to go roller skating. That was the meat market when I was a kid! Everybody was at the skating rink, or you weren't cool at all! I remember when people discovered I could skate backwards to "Push It" by Salt & Pepa, and I earned about a zillion cool points that lasted for weeks. :D
