I have only read the OP and someones response about being a pescetarian. So I will not go into the terminology...

That being said I have not eaten meat in about ten years not do I ever have a desire to. I find it not only easy to not eat meat, but I also find it has opened and broadened my horizons on with regard to what I do eat. Only when I was vegan did I crave meat and only then it was (from what I can tell of my own personal experience) because I was not eating properly combined food. being vegetarian has made me happy for years and I dont think I could ever go back to eating meat, ever. I bit into something that was meat (I just got chills thinking about it) by accident about...5 years ago and I felt so gross and disgusted because of the texture, it was foul and made me ralph. I think at this point even if I wanted to go back to meat I just couldn't. I cant imagine my life with meat in it as a source of food.

^^Are you talking about the whole "complete protein" theory? Cause from what I understand that's been pretty much debunked...http://www.vegsource.com/attwood/complete_protein.htm

Crispy Tofu Fingers

Recipe By : Becoming Vegetarian by Melina, Davis, and Harrison, p. 234
Serving Size : 3 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Main Dishes, Vegetarian Soyfoods

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
vegetable spray for coating baking sheet
12 ounces reduced fat tofu
1/2 cup thick sauce -- see note
salt
garlic powder
or other seasonings -- to taste

Note: use vegetarian oyster-style sauce, sweet and sour sauce, BBQ sauce
or other favorite thick sauce.

Original recipe used firm tofu.

Coat the cookie sheet with vegetable spray. Slice the tofu lengthwise,
about 1/4 inch thick, and pat dry. Put the sauce in a dish, and dip each
piece of tofu into the sauce, coating it well. Place the tofu on the
cookie sheet in a single layer (pieces can be touching but should not
overlap). Sprinkle on the seasoning, and bake at 350F for 20 to 30
minutes, depending on how crisp you like your tofu. Halfway through the
cooking time, flip to brown both sides.

Makes 3 servings (4 oz. each) Per serving: Calories: 191, Protein: 13g,
Fat: 10g, Carbohydrates: 15g, Fiber: 1g. Good source: calcium, iron,
zinc, folate, thiamin

I am a vegetarian.....these are actually good...enjoy!

DR: I have no idea what the complete protein theory is.... at least I don't think I do. I don't really eat proteins actually, almost ever. I eat fruits and veggies and grains and every blue moon an egg or something with cheese in it. I'm mostly vegan, but not 100% I get my "protein" from veggies, as protein is made up of amino acids which come from veggies. To eat the protein of another animal (be it meat or a byproduct) just means your stomach has to break it down into the amino acids that make it up and rearrange them, so to speak to make human protein because that animal has already done this to the amino acids. I feel like you and I have talked about this on another thread... maybe not. I am properly combined in that I try to keep my digestive track alkaine rather than acidic. I do not combine starch and proteins when I eat. Which isn't that hard as I said I don't eat much protein...

I also just noticed the link you left.... it isnt loading for some reason tho...

Thanks for posting that recipe, mercedez! I have a container of tofu in my fridge that I didn't know what to do with. I realized I am sick of adding it to rice and beans. :P

^^^ Yes, Thanks for the recipe! I've never had tofu before....maybe when I'm at the store today, I'll pick some up and give it a try? I've heard mixed thoughts about tofu...I guess there's only one way to find out;)

^^ Just wanted to add that in addition to heating up tofu and cooking it, stir frying it, etc and adding it to veggies/rice/beans whatever.. you can also use it as substitutes in baking and making smoothies.

You can use soft/silken tofu as a substitute for yogurt in smoothies (it's really good) and use it in certain recipes (muffins, cookies, whatever) as a substitute for eggs. You can also use bananas/applesauce as a substitute.

There's pretty much a vegan substitute for EVERY non-vegan food. I wouldn't recommend using the vegan substitutes for all your carnivorous desires though, to make them taste that way they are loaded with sodium and sulfites, and as they DO contain protein, too much is not necessarily good for you, but I do agree that they are a good way to wean yourself off the meat.. by using veggie burgers, fake lunchmeats, fake chik'n nuggets, etc. Personally I don't eat those things (i don't even like vegan cheese anymore) because it reminds me too much of the actual thing and I always second guess and think they're real and freak out.

I really think that veganism is one of the factors that is going to make the world a healthier place, along with people being more conscious about where their food comes from, it also just makes sense-- we're LIVING organisms, so why would we eat something DEAD?

There's also raw-vegan which is a pretty awesome way to live, if you have the money, time and patience to prepare food.

get a free vegetarian starter kit.
it's way easy to be healthy and be a vegan. even if you sneak in ice cream once in a while, it has no cholsetral and much lower fat and saturated fat.

I was never one to get giddy over a steak on a grill or when i look at a pig see sizzling bacon.. so going veggie was not hard for me..

I find my secret for food i love is getting the texture and flavor right.. if you like bbq meats or meats and sauces .. try getting the texture using portebello mushrooms.. ive substituted them for the lamb in schwarma *spelling??
most flavors and dips ect used in meat dishes are in themselves meatless.. so use them just find a different option than meat.. also tempeh.. its a soy producted but not the fake meat stuff.. that is also a good base

I find I need to pay more attention to spices and seasonings.. im currently on an indian food kick... take some olive oil or ghee (just heated butter with the foamy stuff scraped off) and pour in the spices.. ok my spelling will be wrong here but cardamon, ginger, garlic, tumeric, cinnamon.. and work them into the oil to make a paste.. it smells so exotic and all that stuff is healing and warming... once you got that down mix it with rice, vegetables or make a soup out of it

i think alot of people go veggie by just eating the same american diet just replacing meat with substitutes.. for me though i just couldnt get the flavor and tvp creeps me out so im kindof creating my own foods these days

and healthwise i feel the same way.. i feel better than fine so it works for me

If you are a pescatarian (sp?), this is a good website about environmental issues related to the "blue revolution" (farming the seas, etc):

They're good (boca), but I dont particularly care for the texture, and also I try not support philip morris. but some Bocca products are the best. Also, for chicken nuggests and patties, I have found that Quorn brand is the best. I made them for my cousins who wont even try "that hippy fake shit fru-fru stuff" and they diednt eve notice that it wasn't chicken.

Quorn ROCKS! I love the gruyere cheese one..so freakin yummy! But loaded with sodium and expensive...so not really a great thing to have all the time.

This is very interesting. During my teen years I was a strict vegetarian, but I got out of it during college. I think I will begin to transition back.
