Skimpier girls clothing is just tacky and it's a shame that parents aren't doing more to dress their kids in their age group, which is quite blurred these days. The kids section of many stores nowadays looks like the adult section. There isn't any separation in the styles.

I have a real hard time dressing my neice, but I'd be damn if she's going to go out the house wearing what I'd wear at work!

Kids don't get that they're advertising good or bad and I for one wouldn't want that kind of attention. Wear your bathing suits at the swimming pool, dress half-naked at the house, and please wear clothes that fit your body not the ones that are two sizes too small.

I'm just saying...

I think its fine when girls dress like that, its not like their naked. They still have clothes on, its all a matter of the observer. I mean when you dress all "attention getting".....expect some attention....good or bad.

Wow what a thing to say. Have you read the thread at all?

We're talking about CHILDREN. You know, those shorter people you see walking around when you go outside (I think you've seen them)...the ones who we as adults in society have determined are not old or experienced enough to make their own decisions taking into account all possible consequences and repercussions of their choices and behavior. That's why we protect them and make decisions on their behalf.

...what we're criticizing is parents who don't seem to be making the best decision when they let their 4-15 year old CHILD out of the house dressed like a highly-sexualized adult. Maybe you will be one of these parents one day? Maybe you'll think it's a good idea for your 11 year old to learn to "expect" the "bad" attention she'll get from grown men when she dresses in an "attention getting" way....as long as she's "not naked"?

Exactly. They're KIDS, and they think like kids. I don't know many 4 year olds that understand that dressing a certain way is going to get them 'negative attention' from people. They just wear whatever they are given.

Seriously, wtf. Let kids be kids, dammit. I blame Bratz dolls.

My god, yes! Those Bratz dolls are the devil.

Toddlers in high heels, glitter gloss, highlighted hair, eye makeup, false lashes, mini skirts and bra tops.

Ugh.

When I was a kid, I dressed up as an adult for play. I'd wear dress-up clothes from the toybox that mostly consisted of my mom's hand-me-downs and yard sale bargains, like dresses that trailed behind me, lacy gloves, tacky dress-up purses, high-heeled shoes that fit my feet like boats, etc. Nowadays, kids aren't just playing dress-up, they're living it. That's really sad.

A few years ago, I saw a girl who looked about 8-10 years old. She was wearing a tank top, a knee-length tiered skirt, kitten-heeled flip flops, and what looked like a little Vuitton shoulder bag. Even though it wasn't immodest, it still broke my heart because she was dressed like a little adult.

throughout history, most of kids' clothing was just a miniature of what adults wore and it wasn't until the 20th century that kids began to have their own style of "kid" clothing.

now that trend seems to have swung back to the opposite side.

i remember wearing a triangle-top bikini with an ice cream cone print when i was two and no one gave it a second thought. i took tap dancing lessons and wore sequiny, tight costumes for performances. i played with makeup as well.

i wonder what the empirical research in psychology and sociology has to say about this phenomenon: that girls wearing skimpy sexualized clothing will turn them into sluts? i have to go find that out now...

i also wonder that because i swam on swim teams and did diving when i was a teenager i became comfortable with my body because i had to expose a lot of it all the time. now as a stripper i'm even more comfortable with it. can the "kids" clothing of today teach girls to be proud of their bodies? i don't know. on the one hand, we can say that such a phenomenon teaches kids to be comfortable with their sexuality, yet how many kids have actual sex drives?

some of us have said that allowing such clothing to be worn by young girls will lead them to be promiscuous later on and subject them to unwanted sexual attention. i agree with the latter statement. yet i doubt that many of these kids actually understand the sexual message that the clothing sends, much less their own sexuality. in other words, my question is, "is it really the clothing that encourages promiscuity in girls?" i was under the assumption that negative life experiences (such as sexual abuse) and low self-esteem was more of a factor.

i know, i know...an odd response. i am just trying to see the issue from all sides and want to know if such clothing really is as hazardous as we're all saying it is.

*goes off to psychinfo for researching*

so i went on my school's ebscohost for articles in the research and found things mostly on how sexualized images of children in magazines has increased in recent years and another article on young adolescent girls' views of barbie. the research in the field of skimpy clothing on young girls and its effects seems to be lacking. are there any other empirically-based research results anyone can find?

That's exactly why it breaks my heart. We are no longer an agrarian society with high mortality rates. We can afford to have childhoods, not be raised to hit the ground running or be used for child labor. Clothing is a facet of this childhood, and it breaks my heart that it is being glossed over in favor of mini-adulthood. Childhood is such a precious time, and should be enjoyed rather than spent constantly striving towards having real boobs to fill those triangle tops. Skimpy clothing are one way to take childhood for granted in favor of maturity.

Not to mention that in the past kids wearing mini-adult clothes did NOT mean sexually suggestive. High collars, ankle length skirts, etc...were what all women wore. An adult back then would not have gone out in public in what kids are wearing today.

I agree. IMO, a girl should not wear sexually suggestive clothes until she is old enough and mature enough to BE sexually active.

And while I know that sadly, many girls ARE sexually active at 12...it doesnt make it right. And society making it not only ok, but applauding and encouraging it leaves us with a lot of screwed up little girls trying desperatly to act like adults.

It's almost like the world is going backwards, in a weird sorta way. Society USED to, as a whole, approve of sexual activity at 12 years of age. The big difference being that now, folks are letting it slide and NOT training kids to be responsible and educated about it. WAAAY back in the day, wen a girl hit 12, she was already schooled in how to be a wife, a mother, and how to maintain a household. Now it's just folks saying "omg no don't screw at such a young age" but shrugging it off when they do. Meh.

Yes, but now since life expectency is longer we dont have to jump into adulthood so fast. Kids can be kids. And they should be encouraged to do so.

Yup! I think a huge reason why I started wearing itty clothing as a teenager was because my childhood was so... short.

Me too. I swear sometimes that I'm some form of idiot savant. I had to practically raise my 5 younger siblings because my dad had to work long hours because he discovered too late that kids are expensive, and my mom was always having some kind of breakdown. Therefore, I'm very mature in some aspects, like taking care of myself and others. On the other hand, I never got to be a kid and learn a lot of practical life skills, so I'm an absolute idiot and have zero common sense in other ways. I too started wearing skimpy clothes at a young age, partially out of an attempt to catch up with others my age. My kid life was confusing, as I was constantly torn between my parents saying, "Set a good example, you are supposed to be a mature older role model for the rest of the kids," and "Shut up and obey! You're still a child!" Talk about role and age confusion.

Parents have to take responsibility!!! I have a teen and over my dead body would she ever wear shit like that!!! I'm the one who buys the clothes, I'm the one who says what goes!!! Even being exposed to that kinda crap by way of tv, media, mag, ect. it's still no excuse!
She loves her flip-flops, tee shirts and jeans. Even as far as make up goes, the only thing she wears is eye liner. Maybe it's because she's not very girly-girly, but even if she was...I'm the one who says what goes. That shit does not fly with me!!!

Not to jack this thread but I really can't stand those moms who put their daughters (esp. the ones between 2-7) in those pageants...those mos are f**cking sick and should have those babies taken away...:http://www.drphil.com/shows/show/432

I really dont like the knee high boots for kids.
Knee high boots are very sexy and provocative and not what kids should be wearing.

I also have a huge problem with heels for kids. Dont parents realise that they spine is still growing and this could cause severe back problems?

Everything available to adults in the way of shoes and clothing seems to be available for kids - why do parents want mini-me's?

They are creepy because they're 5 and wear more makeup than I do. It makes me so sad when I see them on TV, because half of them don't even want to be there, they are just doing it to make their parents happy. :-\

Pagent kids ARE creepy...Jon BEnet anyone? You'd think people would have learned by now. If there must be pagents...why cant we haev 5 yr olds that LOOK like 5 yr olds? Not have the winner be the one who MOST looks like an adult?

There was a child Pagent episode of the Simple Life this season...even Paris and Nicole said that it was creepy and wrong. If THOSE two cant get on board..you should know it's REALLY bad.

I watched a whole documentary about pageant kids. It was sooooooooooooo creepy. I can't believe what some of those parents push their kids to do. It's simply grotesque. Granted, some children really want to do it, and that's fine. But those pageant parents are often just living their dreams through their children.

It's sad that, as u said CK's 5 year olds cannot be cute and just look 5.
A lot of these kids are spray tanned, have their hair bleached from such a young age, can u image the condition of their hair when they are older?

I saw a documentary too where this poor little girl was crying while they spray tanned her coz she was so sick of it.

What's wrong with these women doing this to their daughters? Are they trying to live thru their children? I dont know but kids should be allowed too play and act like kids.

I know and kids have such beautiful skin they dont need any makeup whatsoever. They have fake lashes too.
I saw it on the simple life with paris and nicole where they are at camp and even paris and nicole seemed to think it was wrong.

I clicked on that link to the dr phil page and then clicked on one of the girls stories (the pageant girl). And I was really confused by this...

"When Regan was 18 months old she noticed that her front tooth was crooked. "She started badgering us to get braces," says Bonnie, who allowed her daughter to get them. "For three days, Regan didn't eat because her teeth were so tender. She would have big tears down her face, but she refused to take the braces off," Bonnie explains. "I think Regan understood that she would look better so she was willing to endure the pain.""

Can someone please explain this to me? How in the hell does a one and a half year old say "I want braces". Do you even have enough teeth to get braces at that age? And LOL at the part where she thinks her daughter understood she would look better. She's only one and a half years old!!!
