I will eat ANYTHING but a raw tomato or one that hasn't had the bland flavor cooked out. It would be nice to like these since so many meals include them.

Seafood (of any kind)
sushi
But, most of all I wish I liked yogert (sp)

My husband is an executive chef and he does alot of great seafood dishes. They look great but, I just refuse to try any of them. I just can't bring myself to eat seafood. *sigh*

Most of the weird filipino dishes that my mommy cooks that everybody else in the family seems to devour like there's no tomorrow. Sorry...I just don't find baby whole squid boiled in vinegar that appetizing. :yuck:

In some ways I'm the same, Mileia. I'm so Americanized that I never bothered to learn how to make any of the dishes my mom's generation & earlier cook in abundance. I'll eat lumpia and pansit, and occasionally adobo (my mom usually does chicken adobo, though I've heard of pork used as well)...but other than that, I'm not really into Filipino dishes. (Unless you count anything deep/pan-fried and served with rice :D)

Most vegetables. The only ones I like are lettuce, potatoes, and corn. The only ones I find edible are peas, carrots, and some leafy salad greens. Anything else is just bad-tasting to me, and I wish I liked them because I know they're healthy.

I don't count potatoes as vegetables, and corn is borderline, but that doesn't stop me from scarfing them down :D But I'm the same with vegetables. I usually don't like tomatoes, peas, green beans or mushrooms (unless they mixed in with a sauce or soup with other vegetables and thus, unavoidable); the only ones I eat with regularity are carrots, lettuce, broccoli, bell peppers, and cucumbers.

I wish I liked onions and mustard. I have never been able to stand them! It's been getting better over the years though. I can handle honey mustard!

Alergic to seafood though occasionally I will eat canned smoked oysters on ritz crackers because I love them. Lactose intolerant. dairy product reek havoc on my digestion. Most vegetables cooked, tibers like potatoes and turnips fine, just don't screw up other things by making them soft and mushy. Jams and Jellies remind me of spoiled fruit.

I hate HATE hot liquids. I can't do hot tea, coffee etc. Something about it makes me gag.

Olives.

I do NOT like soup at all. going back to the hot liquids thing Unless oddly enough it's miso soup.
I don't like carrots at all, same with broccoli and all other vegs likes that.

Definitely oysters. My first raw oyster experience was unfortunate—it was a big one, and it was fat and flaccid and a little rubbery. Not pleasant. But I am so determined to like oysters that I keep forcing myself to eat them, and I’m making some progress. When they are small and sweet and very fresh, they taste of ocean and vaguely of pussy, and I almost like them. I’ll keep working on it. I wish I liked the canned smoked oysters, too; it just seems like such a sophisticated little tin to have in your cupboard. I’ve never tried them fried, but I suppose I should. How bad could they be, right?

I wish I liked super screaming-hot spicy food, cause all the cool people do, but sadly, I just don’t. I can appreciate moderately spicy stuff, but at a certain point, the pain of the peppers just overwhelms the taste of the food, and I don’t understand the appeal. Why bother to have other flavors if you can’t even taste them?

I wish I liked all kinds of funky bleu cheeses; these are the only species of cheeses that I fail to appreciate. It’s the bitterness I don’t like, I think, plus it’s a little hard to get past the idea that one should generally avoid eating MOLD. However, I am working on this one, too, and again, I find that I am making some progress. It doesn’t hurt that I have lately partaken of some amazing cheese courses at some outrageously fine dining establishments. ;)

I wish I liked pickles and other vinegary things more. I DO love Bubbie’s Bread and Butter Chips, but those are the only pickles that do it for me. Probably because the second ingredient on the label is SUGAR. They’re very sweet along with the sour.

I wish I liked uni (sea urchin roe). Tried it once and the texture turned me off—like very very soft butter. Maybe it’s time to try it again. I do love sushi, but I need to expand my range a little, I think.

Finally, I really wish that I liked the Nasty Bits—all those gamey, raunchy, pungent, scary organ meats that the real Food People love. Because I want to join the Cult of the Chefs someday, and I don’t think you can really do it unless you are willing to eat tripe and kidneys and pancreas and tongue and chitlins and brains and anything else that resides in the deep recesses of the body cavities of our food animals. I am easing myself into it slowly…I do like foie gras, though it’s kind of distressingly rich (its taste and texture remind me of the fat on a really amazing steak, when it’s kind of crunchy on the outside and the rest just melts in your mouth…) I am proud to report, too, that I just ate veal sweetbreads for the very first time (pancreas, I think), and found it quite delicious (of course, it was at Michel Richard’s Citronelle, where all the food tastes like it would in Heaven, if there were such a place…) I see why they call it sweetbreads now—the texture is a bit like bread pudding. Not sure what to tackle next…

I DO like a lot of funky foods, though. Ohmygod I love caviar—osetra is best. Even when I was a kid, I liked lumpfish caviar on Ritz crackers, and this caviar-and-onion cheese that you could get at the local cheese shop. I also love masago—you know those tiny, bright orange, salty-sweet fish eggs that they sometimes put on sushi rolls; I think it’s smelt roe. Sometimes I just eat it plain. I love pate—the kind sold as Mousse Trouffe (Truffle Mousse), and the kind sold as Mousse de Canard. I like some randy cheeses, too, including the one that you get in the cheese courses in super-fancy restaurants that makes you think, “Wow, it tastes like horse shit—but in a good way!” I don’t know what it is, though. I like steamers and mussels (though I heed Anthony Bourdain’s advice to generally avoid such things unless I have cooked them myself), and have always liked lobster & other shellfish. I really want to try geoduck. One of the most oft-told family stories about me recounts the time that I impressed the chef in a restaurant in Paris by devouring both my parents’ orders of escargots and then demanding more; I was all of two years old.

For the Russians: I was recently introduced to Zakuski (did I spell that right?), and I was surprised at how much I did like the pickled herring! Everything else was pretty damn delicious as well—Who knew Russian food was so tasty?!

I love me some truffles, too—their pungent primal funkiness is just so fucking sexy.

Oh my god. I love talking about food.

Oh! And I wish I loved a really good scotch, but I guess I'm just not suave enough for that...

I wish I liked hot foods more, particularly chilis. As it is, I can barely handle them, even in moderation.

This is unrelated to the thread title, but I also wish I knew how to use chopsticks.

^ Oooooh I adore ketchup, as well as almost all other condiments.

But I wished I liked sweet things more. People rave about desserts, but I really can't get into it. I'm way more into savory foods. I don't really like chocalate and cake and candy freak me out. Seems weird.

I just turned 21 yesterday and the bartenders kept trying to make me sugary bitch drinks cause they thought that would be all I could handle. But god, I wanted to marry the bartender (the only girl bartender I met that night) who actually listened to me and gave me vodka and soda water with lime. Yummy.

I wish I liked vegetables more. The only way I can eat them is raw or lightly stir fried. I dont like many vegetables either.

Red meat. Im glad that I dont love it but I know I should eat some coz I am probably anaemic.

I know water is not food but I dont drink enough of it. Esp now that it is winter I just dont feel like it but I know it's good for me.

Mileia777 send that vinegar squid my way - YUMMY

That's another one for my list! I am an absolute cheese fanatic, but bleu cheeses, stiltons, roqueforts - I have a tough time with. Sometimes if it's paired the right way, I've found them enjoyable. Like the right wine or if it's used in a certain way withing a dish. I once had a revelatory stilton studded with bits of dried apricot. But generally, I can't eat big hunks of it. Gorgonzola too.

I hear ya! I've only recently moved away from being a complete vegetarian, so the thought of plunging headlong into the likes of haggis and monkey brain tartare (served en corps de monkey) is a bit much, yet I'm moving more and more towards food in the future. So - Cult of the Chefs? Are you going to Culinary School? I did Boot Camp for a week at CIA this spring - and left only wanting more. PM me if you want the nitty gritty on that!

And I was about to reference Bourdain when you mentioned the "Nasty Bits", but ya beat me. ;D

^^^YAY!!!!! ANOTHER FOOD GEEK!!!! I'm so happy!!!! I got excited when I saw you had added to the thread, because after I saw your awesome cakes in the NYC thread I had a feeling you might be One of Us....Nope I'm not in culinary school yet, but I am very seriously considering it...I work as kind of a pseudo-chef for a catering company and I love it so much that it's really made me rethink this whole biology thing (Never mind that I've spent a total of about 8 years to get this stupid degree, let's ditch the whole thing and go another 30K into debt to learn to cook!!!! Good idea!!!) OMG, I am so incredibly jealous of your CIA experience that I can't even stand it! Yes, I wanna hear more!!!

You are getting SUCH a long email . . . ;D

Also! On topic! Black olives. I can only take them in moderation. Small doses, the right context, VERY high quality, and ideally by themselves, not mixed up in other things.

Yes, sadly, this usually means you, too, puttanesca sauce. Even though I do love your salacious origins.

Hah... it's ok to draw the line at stuff like dinaguan and balut. Trust me, I have NO qualms about saying no. *heh*

As for me...

Lettuce - I know it's healthy, but eesh... it just doesn't taste right to me.

Olives, mushrooms - don't like the consistency... wish I liked it so I could eat damn near any combo pizza that's usually ordered at a party.

Holy crap, I thought there had to be a food item or two I didn't like but apparently I will eat anything if prepared to my liking. I didn't see anything on these lists that I won't eat, and there definitely isn't anything I wish I liked that I don't already because I like green vegetables and salmon and other healthy things. If I could have a temporary revulsion to cookies that would be cool.

I sympathize with you all; it has to be a pain in the ass to avoid something as common as a tomato.
