poms are great dogs.....I've had three...here is the newest caleb. Yeah they've all been lickers, and they have all had hip issues....Caleb has two new rear hips totaling $2,400 per hip.
But they are suer smart and super lovable.

I was lucky enough to have had a pom for 13 years,"chi chi" was sooo smart and so loyal, watch for health problems in this breed,he had a knee joint operation, testicle cancer, and his doom was a heart murmer. He was on meds for years for his heart.I miss him so.I have 3 pekes and my bestest bud yet my very mello needy jack russell.Bottom line is dogs are very much like people as far as personalities go,but some breeds are more prone to health problems... Mixed breeds seem to live the longest in most cases so please RESCUE-ADOPT PLEASE! and yes most poms are very yappy and so fragile I didn't like kids around him. Good luck. In loving memory "chi chi" my very first true friend. 1992-2005

They are definitely lickers and mine bites. She isn't good with kids and they always want to pet her.
I love poms! I think with most little dogs they have huge over the top personalities to make up for their lack of size. I personally love little dogs. They are a lot of more sturdy than they look. My dog is pretty small compared to most dogs but I always forgot just how small she is until I see near a bigger dog or even cat.
With proper breeding genetic health problems shouldn't be as big of a concern. If you want to go the breeder route make sure they test for genetic problems and that the parents (and idealy the grandparents) are free from any problems. Although rescuing saves a life and the loving you get from a rescue makes up the the uncertainty.
