I read once that women have to choose at some point whether to belong to the "lady class" or the "whore class." The first group has respect and protection, but no freedom; the second group has freedom, but no respect or protection.
That is on the money Yek! Do you mind if I add that to my siggy?

That is so sad. When I was reading up on sexual assault stats (we don't have rape laws here, but varying degrees of 'sexual assault', which I think is a good idea), I thought "how lucky am I that I was never really sexually assaulted...
...oh, but wait. Except all those times some guy touched my crotch against my will at work, sometimes forcibly."
Then I was a sad panda. There is no worse feeling. I'd rather be punched in the gut than sexually assaulted.

^^Yeah, this idea of "rape" legally being this specially, magically invasive and horrific crime that is qualitatively different from other types of sexual assault is insulting and mysogynistic.

Y'know.. even if people see us as 'just hookers'... hookers don't deserve to be raped either. :/

^^^That was my point. I wasn't sure if "what do they think we are...hookers?" was tongue in cheek or not.

Situations like the one in the OP are why I've been carrying a knife at work for years.
No one is going to do that to me and get away with it.
(PS Yes people, I understand "consequences.")

Go nuts, Reiyth. :P I only wish I remembered who came up with those words. It wasn't me, so don't give me credit for the phrasing!
And Dottie, I stand corrected; everything I've read on the subject gave the impression that was the law in most of the country, but I guess that's just the law in the areas I read about. What a shame. I am aware about the marital rape exceptions, which are disgusting. Tennessee is one of those states where wives can't be raped, though there have been a few battery convictions where rape was a factor.

No...I meant it as in...the two jobs are differant and yet guys expect strippers to do the job of a hooker.
It would be as if I walked in to Publix and expected the checkout girl to cook dinner for me. She isnt a chef. Two differant jobs..yes, both deal with food...but you cant expect that because someone does one job, they automatically do the other

Also, in NO WAY should my earlier statements deter anyone from pressing charges. Rape convictions are hard to win (I know, I have tried rape cases) but then, every case is hard to win. Just because the trial courts have their obstacles doesn't mean that victims of any crime should not press charges.
The main reason rape is so hard to prove is due to the mens rea element.
The lack of consent is the part that is fiercely constested by both sides and this is where the "whore" bullshit comes into it. The defence will try to prove that the victim consented to intercourse because of her promiscuous past.
Fucking disgusting.
I am not returning to this thread I get too passionate and upset by the topic.

Sorry EE, I hope I didn't threadjack.
Back to the original point, one thing everyone should know is whether their state has a Rape Shield law. These are laws that prevent prior sexual history of the victim from being used as evidence by the defense. If your state has one, and you find yourself counselling a victim like EE did in the original post (see the tie in?) you can remind her that her own past won't be relevant in court and she shouldn't be scared to come forward. That's what Rape Shield laws are designed to do.

^^
there are many ways to get around rape shield laws unfortunately and defence lawyers are very clever at doing so.
Damn why cant i stay away from this thread? hehe.

I should have used different wording. I don't think ANYONE deserves to be raped, stripper, prostitute, grocery clerk, nobody. I have no disrespect to anyone that is a hooker. I personally don't think a stripper and a hooker is one and the same, there is a fine line, but I don't cross it. And honestly, around here, I hear alot of shit about "if your a stripper youre just a fucking whore" and I have to keep my job a total secret from all my future inlaws because if they knew I was a stripper, they'd think I was fucking every guy in the CR for money, and I get pretty tired of that. Its not possible to strip and not be a prostitute to some people, and it pisses me off.
