Pet Cemetary and Misery.....Stephen King is THE father of horror
I beg to differ. Have you heard of Edgar Allen Poe?

Funny, I have "Jason X" playing on the DVD.
Very few horror movies really scare me. When I was 16, "Aliens" really spooked me out. I was afraid to turn of fthe lights, for fear aliens would come out and attack me. I also saw "Pet Semetary" when I was younger. There's a scene where a doll cuts into someone's ankles. The doll came out fromt he bottom of the bed. For a week, I was afraid to approach my bed, for fear my ankles too will be cut.

I haven't read all the posts, but the first Hostel was amazing. I also loved the House of 1000 corpses and Devil's Rejects wasn't bad. The Hills Have Eyes was great, but sequel was cheesy as all hell, Hostel sequel sucked too. But yess Hostel by far. oh, and House of Wax was entertaining and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Man I didn't realize how much I liked scary movies.
oh I had to edit to add more: the SAW , all 3of them were really unpredictible. That is what makes a great scary movie , when u can't even figure out what the end will be.
HOSTEL!!!

The ultimate classic for me is the first Scream. When I first saw this movie when I was like 16 I had no idea someone could be so horrid yet so creative as a director and script writer, jaw dropped at the end. The first Saw falls DIRECTLY under that also because of the ending and how insane that was when the "dead" guy in the middle of the room just gets up. My heart has never raced so fast. Not much distance between the two. Different types of movies but as far as my liking them, they're both reallllllllllllllllly good and really creative, and of course, SCARY!

Horror movies don't scare me... but i'm obsessed with them. I LOVE zombie flicks, but I prefer the ones with a bit of humor. Shaun of the Dead, Dead Alive, Evil Dead trilogy, etc. But I'll pretty much watch anything with zombies.
I hate how horror movies nowadays are in your face and nothing but gore. The classics are smart. The original chainsaw massacre is know as one of the bloodiest movies of all time but you never actually see blood spilled. In Psycho, you never actually see her get stabbed, you only think you do. Everything went down behind closed doors and let your think the worst instead of them showing the worst.

The movies were made from his books. Not trying to flame, but even King would tell you that Poe and others were inspirations.

the original Phantasm !
I'm also somewhat partial to 'Bachelor Party Massacre' because I was in it LOL
(the main character cut my tits off with a machete )
Another vote for the original Phantasm!!
I got Angus Skrim's autograph (The Tall Man) at a haunted house opening years ago ...

Jaws. When I first saw this, we sat on the end of the first row. That night, as I was dropping off to sleep, our little dog brushed against my leg. I jumped out of bed and across the room and was wide awake.
The Sixth Sense. I was so surprised by the ending that I had to see it again the next day just to spot all the places where I had been tricked.
