Sheesh, it's a joke. Approximately covers 3%. 1/6 = 16.67%. 1/7= 14.28%.

even wikipedia (the referenced source there) says that's not a fact, just a legend...

my favorite fact, at least relating to foodstuffs, is that you can derive all your nutrients from a diet containing only raw and/or rare meat.

Actually red meat lacks vitamin D... but eggs are nutritionally complete.

Dust mites are all over your house and in your carpet, in your mattress, in your seat and couch cushions, eating your flaked-off dead skin. When you vacuum, they can live for generations inside the vacuum cleaner bag.

Change topics, then. A polar bear liver has so much concentration of vitamin A that it (the liver) is toxic to humans. So stay away from the polar bear liver.

Last night a girl who was playing a video gaming machine asked me why Crocodiles eat rocks. I told her that it was to aid in digestion. That wasn't included in the multiple choice questions, so she picked that it helps them dive deeper, which the machine said was correct. Most of the websites I've looked at so far say that it aids in digestion. A few have said other things, but nothing about diving deeper.

Anyone know? If anyone does we can add another fact to this thread.

It's because they can't chew. The jaw design won't allow for it.

here's something I found:

6.7 Why does my caiman sometimes ingest small stones?

All crocodilians eat stones and rocks in the wild - they're referred to as "gastroliths", and the process is called "geophagy". These stones sit in the animal's stomach, probably for many years, and help to break down food by a mechanical grinding action - a little like a bird's crop. They may also help to weigh down the caiman a little more in the water and therefore act as a ballast. In captivity, crocodilians should benefit from the presence of stones in their guts - it will help them to digest their food a little better if you feed whole animals, especially those with hard bones or shells. If you provide many small stones or pebbles in the enclosure, then the caiman can ingest any which are required. Be cautious of this habit, however, as the animal will resort to ingesting just about anything - especially if there are no suitable stones available. One owner resorted to surgery on his caiman after an x-ray revealed that it had ingested three aquarium suction cups, which occupied most of its stomach capacity.

Women have gonadotrophic stem cells, too!
-That is, you women aren't born with all your eggs, you make 'em throughout your life, too.

Schizophrenic and Bipolar individuals have different electrophysiological responses to everyday stimulus.
-That is, you can measure the difference via EEG

You know the genetic code? You know how us scientists tell if a baby is going to have a birth defect? Compare the baby's DNA sequence to that of the "regular" human genome.
-Scientists have found locations of amino acid mutations (on the DNA sequence) that correlates to a specific disorder.

I'll add more later!

That isn't fact, it's theory.

The long-held belief that women are born with their lifetime supply of egg cells is now in doubt, and the change could revolutionize fertility treatments.
The findings of a new study raise the possibility that women, like men, replenish their reproductive cells throughout life. The research, published in the March 11 issue of Nature, was done in mice, a mammal often used as a model for human biology. If the results can be replicated in humans, the findings will upend a doctrine held by fertility researchers for half a century.

Contrary to long-held scientific views that the number of oocytes (eggs) in the ovaries of most mammals is fixed at birth, scientists report that new oocyte-containing follicles continue to develop in the ovaries of adult mice. The research suggests that these new oocytes come from stem cells located in the ovary. The study, supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), one of the National Institutes of Health, was conducted by Jonathan L. Tilly, Ph.D., and colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and appears in the March 11, 2004, issue of Nature
"If this finding is confirmed by others, Dr. Tilly and his colleagues would seem to have rewritten the book on reproductive biology — at least for mice," says Frank Bellino, Ph.D., Deputy Associate Director of the Biology of Aging Program at the NIA. "Further study about how oocyte production in adults is controlled might eventually make it possible to regulate the rate at which oocytes are formed in women. This, in turn, could possibly be used to delay premature ovarian failure as well as menopause and may help women maintain their health for a longer period of time."

This is common of many carnivores, I believe. One of the early exploration teams of either Antarctica or the North Pole killed and ate some of their sled dogs when they were running low on food. As a result, some members of the team died of vitamin A toxicity.

I will look up more information on this to confirm it as a fact when I return from my run, as I freakin' love discussing people who go to polar regions. I regard them as the most hardcore folks in the world.

Adult male pandas have penises only 1.5 inches in length. This is part of the reason it's so hard to get them to mate. In fact, a baby panda was recently born to an adult keepers thought was a male... I guess they just assumed he had a super-tiny pandaweiner, when in fact, he had bearvag.

Real Ginger Ale glows under a blacklight.
Why?
The Quinine in it!
Apparently back when malaria was a big issue, and since quinine does fairly well in treating malaria, quinine was placed in ginger ale much like flouride is placed in our water today. They never stopped doing this, even today (Canada Dry, for example)

Perhaps a few of you know this one:
Approx. one half of a man's penis is on the inside of his body.

Earthworms change their sex based on the temperature of their environment. From asexual to male.

Cells in the intestine, "enterocytes," divide twice a day.
Cells in the liver divide less than once a year.
Neurons and muscle cells don't divide. Period.

We sneeze in excess of 100MPH.

There is no medical explanation behind hiccups.

Few more later if this thread keeps going.

That would be tonic water, not ginger ale. Then again, you can get quinine and put it in there, if you have malaria.

Quinine is also supposed to be in a Vesper cocktail, according to the people at Esquire mag. (back when they were looking into it for the recent James Bond movie).
