Alli is an over the counter version of Orlistat, a prescription weight loss drug. Supposedly it blocks 25% of the fat you eat.

If you do the math, it really doesn't save much. If you eat enough to make it so it blocks a worthwhile amount, you will shit into the next county.

I suppose it helps a little bit but only because I'm terrified of eating fat ::) It will probably have side effects if I have a sandwich and it definitely will if I have fast food.

If anybody takes it, make sure you ALWAYS fart over a toilet.

But you're only supposed to take it if your BMI puts you into the overweight category, which mine was when I started taking it.

I have seen the advertisements for that stuff. Sounds scarey! I wouldn't want to have those side effects in public:O

Mmmm, dieting. A big yay for protein pancakes, for saving my sanity (and helping me lose 4 pounds).

Ooo i'm feeling tired. I guess it was good to make this a "lazy" day...only 1/2 hour abs exercises, and an easier yoga class because my body really was craving some good stretching and twisting.

I think it's good to take off 1 or 2 days from cardio hard stuff a week..and just work out 5 or 6 days a week, and the other one or two days do light stuff like a yoga class or pilates, or simply some sit-ups. Does anyone think 3 days of working out, 1 day easy workout (like a yoga class only) then 3 days of workign out again would work? I guess it IS necessary to take a rest..my muscles and feet feel a bit too swollen...and when I tried to do the elliptical I couldn't do more than 5 mins, I felt depleted. Then I read somewhere how taking a couple days off helps your muscle repair...so you come back stronger with a faster metabolism because you actually gave your body a day off to repair and build more muscle. So I guess however much I want to keep going 7 days a week, it might actually be counterproductive to fat loss and metabolism boosting because it's not giving my body time to build more muscle. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I'm glad I stayed away from having my 2nd snicker's bar for today...It's a yummy treat, has some protein so it's not that bad, but like someone mentioned on another thread about protein bars, corn syrup is bad for you (its molecular structure prevents your body from detecting the calories from it...so you don't feel full when you would if it were made from pure regular sugar...so the idea is you end up eating more and still feelign hungry). I instead made homemade hot chocolate: skim milk, cocoa powder, and some Sucanat (it's dehydrated sugar cane juice...so it has the vitamins and minerals like potassium and magnesium, which gets stripped out to make white sugar), ane salt and cinnamon. Oooh it was very good :) Minus loads of saturated fat (cocoa powder doesn't have the cocoa butter fat in it...so it's not as fatty)...half the amount of calories of a snickers bar, and almost twice as much protein....plus more flavonoids from the pure cocoa powder. So it in the end doesn't give me as much of a sugar high-low, I think. Though I don't believe in treat denial...I won't ever give up snickers bars, just will see if I can find healthier stuff to mix it up with...
Keeping up with the fish oil caps and Tonalin CLA. Though I think I need to get some more flax oil. It's good stuff.
TIP: I think it's a good idea for some people to look into what they call "plyometrics." they totally exhaust me, but I think it helps shake up my body and get the fat-burning machinery pepped up in my body. It's stuff like jumping over back and forth like some weights or stack of books or a long bench on a floor. It's also stuff likejumping down, doing a plank kick back, then jumping back up to standing position. Also, set up some cones or other obstacles, squat, then jump up to hop over the next cone, squat, jump up...repeat. Oooh you'll feel the burn but it's soo good. And side-to-side jumping leaps is good too (like in the movement of skiing). To make this even more challening, do the side-to-side jumps while reaching up with your arms, like you're trying to throw a ball into a really high hoop. I guess these kinds of exercises are a good compliment to regular cardio, stretching and resistance stuff..pilates.
I'm sooo glad yesterday I did 10 mins of hard fast running (like 8.5 mph), then 10 minutes of fast-with-slow-intervals stair climber machine. I felt a little irritated at first, but then I felt really good doing it...maybe it was the type of music playing too. Also, sometimes it depends on the time of day you go to the gym, etc...that affects whether I feel at peace and motivated..or irritated (there's one gym location that has a terrible layout..no windows, just no feng shui feeling...i've never been able to sustain long hard workouts there...I just don't feel a good vibe...anyone else find that the place where they workout affects their productivity?).
I've been craving lots of protein lately...even had a chicken patty in the AM lol! I think that shows my body is building more muscle. Though I still have maintained a feminine shape..I avoid arm weight lifting, because I don't look good with anything more than toned arms...muscular arms just aren't good looking on me in particular.
Finally made a breakthrough in the veggie department: 2 days in a row, was able to eat an entire steamed sliced zucchini, with some margarine and salt on it. And it actually was yummy! I enjoyed eating it! And more so than eating salad with vinegar..that's too bitter and feels like a chore. Tried to eat the zucchini raw (supposedly there are "live"enzymes, and so it's better than you), but it just wasn't very yummy...so rather did it steamed. Oh well, at least it was a whole veggie. Got my antioxidants. And i've been able to stay away from the occasional smoking i'd do...and I feel better, a clearer mind. For some reason the smoking made me feel more tired and even emotionally tired...so I guess it's better to stay away and replace it with a green tea and coffee and fun gym classes addiction. I'm not missing it, so that's good.

I want to make a good peach/apple/strawberry/blueberry cobbler from scratch! With cinnamon! It'd be a good Fall treat (the weather has gotten chillier now...yaay finally!)...and is sort of nostaligic...Just need to make a trip to the grocery store. I've always found that having good desserts or treats helps keep me going...otherwise i just couldn't keep up with this workout challenge stuff. I used to do ok with food denial, but now i'm doing muuch better without it. sooo glad those crazy diet idea days are gone...those were torture and counterproductive. It WaS disordered eating...not totally wacko, but it wasn't pretty. I can say that this healthier, tastier lifestyle has been an important personal accomplishment to me. No more food craziness! But coming to this point didn't happen overnight..it took years of trial and error, reading up on stuff, reading nutrition books, etc..coming to my own conclusions. But boy has it been worth it!:)

Ok ladies, let's keep this up :)

I fucked up today - had pizza (there goes being vegan!) and chips tonight. But I also messed around on my friends pole tonight, and learned how to go upside down (which I've never done because I've never been able to practice w/o custies watching)

Tomorrow will be good. I will rock out with good food and some exercise... bed time soon.

Okay I wasn't trying to lose weight or inches as such, but I bought a gown last week and tonight, it was baggy in spots! I've definitely trimmed around the waist, even though it's still covered by a layer of ice cream (pudge). Whatever pilates is doing to my core it's totally working.

$65 down the tubes, but- A WAIST! It was too long anyway. . .

I feel so much better about this whole thing at the moment-I'm still struggling with eating better though.

I have Ali and I took it only a couple times when I was bad as in eating a couple slices of pizza (which is quite fatty). I didn't notice any change in my bathroom habits or gas when I took it so I'm not sure if it really worked. I could just have a pretty strong stomach- I don't get sick too easily. I wouldn't want to take Ali regularly because it prevents you from absorbing vitamins and minerals which I try to eat. I'd rather just eat healthy most of the time.

Ok, I've been bad. Thought about dropping outa the challenge, but dammit I'm not quitting! I've been living on fast food (bad, I know) because I haven't had time to go shopping. BUT, I've been ordering as healthy as I can (ie, a veggie whole wheat pita with mustard). I'm going to make a menu tonight, and hopefully a shopping list (depending on how long my homework takes me) and tomorrow is a new day. :)

When I first started taking it I noticed it took a few doses to start taking affect. This time around, though... YIKES! I've taken one with a stupid turkey sandwich and I've been suffering ever since. :( I think it's done cleaning me out now. I hope.

Yesterday I had an omlette the size of a plate, and pancakes with whipped cream and maple syrup. I'm not sorry either. I did work out pretty hard.

Today I ate better overall, but my sugar cravings were back in full force b/c of yesterday's pancakes. I just got back from a 40 minute walk, and I did abs, legs and gluts this morning.

I really dislike working out my lower body, my legs are strong from years of ballet (and marathon sex). I have to force myself to do it.

Aw man I fucked it up today. I had a soy yogurt with granola and a bagel w cream cheese...then my kid and I went to his buddy's B-day party and we were running around an amusement park for like 3 hours. I was starving. So then the party went back to the B-day boy's house and I ate pizza for the first time in a month or so and birthday cake.

I'm going to have to put in an extra hour at the gym tomorrow. OMG.

Pizza isn't necessarily bad! If you want it, hey, just have it, life's short..you should enjoy it! I tried the avoiding certain foods tactic (i.e. avoid all forms of fat, even nuts...or avoid all forms of sugar, even fruit), it never worked....it made me frustrated, cranky, etc. Plus, it's just not good for you. your body needs VARIETY. Look at the food pyramid diagram..you want all that stuff.

I think some of the concepts in "French women don't get fat" book are good...:have a little bit of everything.

So, don't deny yourself the pizza. Just ideally estimate the amount of calories in it (there's nutiritonal info of lots of fast food pizza brands online) or if you buy it at grocery store, check the nutritional info on it...see how many calories, add that to your daily tally (let's say your limit is 1800 calories a day...keep track of it). It works. It worked for me, but only when I decided to try it...and yaay success compared to the crazy shit I was trying before in attempt for weight management and weight loss. And if you want pizza, try to ideally get the "whole wheat" pizza if they have it, the more fiber the better.

A lot of people seem to be eating foods they wanted to cut out for the challenge. It's probably because we are two weeks into it. It's not that big a deal to have a few "forbidden" foods once in while.

Roulette
10-14-2007, 08:14 PM
my issue isn't solely that I'm not eating healthy, but I'm letting myself down because I'm not sticking to what i have done before and what i know I can do because I'm upset about daily life. My concern about eating is I want to eat properly combined foods, not necessarily cut out fat and sugars and whatnot. I also want to get back to being vegan but shit kinda sucks now and I just don't feel like working for it for the three weeks it takes for me to adjust to. But that's just me.

I do however totally agree with the idea that we aren't going to be able to cut out everything unhealthy all at once, we will mess up and it's ok.

da
10-14-2007, 08:22 PM
www.caloriesperhour.com is great for finding out how many calories burned during a certain activity...and also what basal metabolic rate is (how many calories you need to consume every day in order to MAINTAIN your weight).

Another tip: I think try to distinguish between emotional eating and true hunger....sometimes when i'm anxious, I might crave something...but it's not a true craving...Try to stay tuned to those...have some apple cider vinegar with water when you're feeling anxious and having an emotional eating pang... or have some hot sauce with water...that will quell it.... Now, if you're actually truly hungry and need some food, that's a whole other thing.

Roulette
10-14-2007, 08:26 PM
^^^ I definately eat at times when I'm not actually hungry!! Does apple cider vinigar taste ok? I've never heard of that. what would be the ratio?

da
10-14-2007, 08:48 PM
Well apple cider vinegar is reaaally sour...sometimes I guess to quell some fake hunger, you got to give some pow spice and extreme flavors to your tummy...it sorta makes you feel like you ate something, and gives your tummy something to munchie on...though low-calorie.

the vinegar isn't really yummy...that's not the point. I take like 1 tablesppon in a cup of water...and try to down it really fast...in a few gulps...yes....brrrr yeeks...but it has helped me when it's late at night, but I feel angsty, but not truly hungry...or am trying to follow my no-eating-for-3-horus-before-bedtime...it destroys my fake hunger.

The hot pepper sauce, too...red sauce...it's sorta good, and sorta really strong, but I have like 1 teaspoon of it, little nips at a time with as much water as I need. Also, maybe having fresh lemon squeezed in water helps too. I also drink lots of green tea before bed...having something to sip on that's other than water keeps my tummy happy. Also, maybe try seltzer water.

I read that apple cider vinegar helps with fat loss...i'm not sure how, but taht's what I read. Maybe try finding some articles online about it.

Also, sometimes if I feel like having something but I can't, I have some fresh lettuce and apple cider vinegar..yes not the most appetizing thing, but it is something in my stomach...and I guess maybe it helps boost the metbolism becasue your body has something to work on digesting, so that's good. Or, even better, steam up some broccoli or zuchinni, have some salt, margarine and or vinegar on it...it's pretty good, you might be surprised that you end up cravign this stuff after a while... Plus it's really nutritious, and helps your body "alkalize" more...not sure what the science behind that is, but there are "acidic" and "alkaline" foods...and usually your body needs some alkaline foods like from veggies, green tea... I don' thave taht much info about this, but eh it's an interesting concept

Roulette
10-14-2007, 08:59 PM
you body produces different chemical/enzymes to digest acidic foods than it does alkaline foods - which when they are kept separate (properly combined) you dont get that tired feeling that lots of people get after eating. Fruits on the other hand are considered predigested and pass through you. but when you mix them with anything other than fruit they stay in your system and rot. gross I know, but so it goes... If you're interested in it read a book called Fit For Life it explains everything.

I'll try that vinegar thing though for sure. I dont like hot sauce, don't even have any in the house. I get "hungry" at night and end up eating total garbage!!

I'm not changing how I eat at all. I hate denying myself and all I want to do is tone up anyway. I'm using this thread to motivate me to work out at least 3x a week, preferably 5. I figure it's better than the zero exercise I was getting before. Anyway, I think those who want to go balls out in this thread, great for them. I can never stick to a diet, nor do I really need to lose much weight, so that's not part of my personal challenge. This thread is to motivate you regardless of how your plan differs from others.

Just doing my weekly 'check in'.

I finally had someone take some before pix of me, but after the frontal view, my battery went dead:( and I didn't have another one. I'll post it soon. It's a great before pic since I am on the 2nd day of my cycle I am at my most bloated and horrid looking.

As far as cheating this week: On Wednesday, I went to a baseball game. I had two beers afterward, then car sex, then I went home (that car sex increased my appetite) so I ate a full box of frozen dim sum ( 1/4 box is a serving), and 1/2 bag of Mickey D's fries. Yum. I know I had a small bowl of Ben and Jerry's at some poing this week.

Work outs: This has been a bad week for me. I started my cycle three days late and it is still very heavy (clotting) and I had some dental work done (ouch, pain killers).

So, I got in two shfits of weights and about 4 hours of cardio. One hour outside, one at the gym and two of them at my stage club where I average ten 10 min. sets per four hour shift.

Not a great week, but I wasn't a total couch potato either.

nah, I'm a cheerleader. as a 3rd wave feminist, I have a huge draw to the strip club, because, for the girls who do it for mature and well-thought-out reasons, it really puts feminism on the map. I think stripping has the potential of really dropping a lot of boundaries and limitations we put on FEMALE sexuality.

A better week, exercise-wise. I did stretches 5 days, Pilates video 2 days and 2 classes. Yay! I can see msucles, hiding under the fat. Not great on the food front-period was way late, so I had extended cranky, nauseous PMS. Just didn't eat much at all. Sammiches and things.

Unfortunately exercise seems to make me depressed and weak feeling for a couple hours afterwards, so my mood has been sucky and the money bad. I've been trying to eat more protein to counteract the blood sugar drop (I know that's a lot of it) and planning exercise for non work days, but it's not working too well yet. I do get the endorphins feeling after being onstage though, so maybe part of it's mental? Hating exercise or something?

Oh well-$25 more towards my October reward.

There are 4 dvds so that's sunday thru wednesday and then the belly dancing class on thursday and taking a break on friday and saturday.
By the way I read a story today about how it is ok to be bad on your diet 1 meal out of the week. Has something to do about your body not getting use to the food you have been eating and keeping your metabolism up. Will have to go back and see exactly how it is worded.

If anyone else can think of lower calorie foods (like Veggie slices or Skinny Cow ice cream) that can sub for higher calorie, higher fat foods, post them!

I love dairy too but it hurts my tummy so I've been trying to cut down to maybe a serving or two a day.

I don't really cut anything out completely. I almost never drink regular soda but every once in a while I'll even have that. I don't know, I think if I tried to say I was never going to eat chocolate again I'd immediately go and have a whole bag. I don't even completely avoid foods I don't like, lol.

I did 30 minutes on the elliptical today on a high weight level and high intensity level. It was really tough. I haven't worked out that hard for about 5 years! When I got off I showered then immediately feel asleep. It really wore me out but it'll be good for me.
I weighed myself yesterday morning and I haven't lost anything in my 5 days of dieting but hopefully I'm toning up a little.

For the people who love cheese (which I do too!) maybe you could limit your cheese to on salads instead of dressing or using less dressing. That's my new idea, instead of eating a few slices of cheese that can really add up. Try adding feta cheese, real Parmasian cheese from the deli section, or real crumbled blue cheese to your salad. You won't need much cheese on your salad and then you also have the encouragement to eat more salad so you can get your vitamins and fiber.
