A tip I learned in college whilst I was a dietitian major .... Find out what night of the week your local grocery store stocks its meats ... for me, it was on Sundays. So on Sunday afternoons or Saturdays, I would go to the store and buy the meat that was at reduced cost because it only had one more day for sale before it had to be chucked in the garbage. So instead of paying $4.50 for chicken, you might only pay for a pound of chicken for only $2.50 and just throw it in the freezer. Go by the "sell by" date on the meat to find out when you should go back.

Another thing ... buy a whole chicken and a bag of frozen vegetables, a couple of chicken bouillion cubes. bag of noodles and voila ... you have chicken soup for a week and then some if you freeze it ... probably about $7.00 total.

ramen noodles...they're like $1 a pack...if you can spare to throw some chicken on rice or veggies along with some spices in it it'll be a satisfying meal.

lunch meat and cheese...you can get those cheap and it goes a long way. the cheap cereal in a bag goes a long ways.

hope this was of some help and your situation changes.

There's always the day-old section in the bakeries of grocery stores. Get there as soon as the store opens though, because the elderly tend to shop early and they b-line for that section and ransack it! (I used to work at Shop Rite when I was 17...)

Yes really, has been an organic dewormer for a long time. To be honest it is normally raw leaves fed to larger livestock like goats, sheep, the aforementioned pigs. Cats are obviously much smaller, so the dose needs to be much less.

Were I to do it I would boil up a half cup of rice, table spoon of olive oil, then a pinch of chewing tobacco, mix up with wet cat food.

Now this could give them diarrhea, and the worms may start trying to exit the cats as the nicotine reaches their colon. So yeah little white wiggly rice grains falling out of kitties butts. Worse a tape worm that will look like a long noodle hanging out of kitties ass. Your welcome for thatlittle mental picture.

Cheap food? I like Mahatama saffron rice with a can of chicken breast mixed in.

Do you bake? Bannock is quick and easy,
Navy beans in a slow cooker all day with a ham bone.
I made tuna salad and chicken salad sandwiches with rolls from the day old bread section.
Spaghetti noodles with olive oil and spices.

Now THERE'S a visual I could have done without....especially since I just ate a bowl of vermicelli.

What's your condiment/spice cabinet like? Basically $20 to feed two people for a week won't get you much more than bare bones staples and you'll need to rely on other things in your kitchen to round it out. I looked on vons.com and here's what I came up with:

42oz Oatmeal (in the big canister, not the individual packets) 2.50
80oz bag of rice 2.50
16oz bag pinto beans 1.32
32 oz bag frozen peas and carrots 2.39
(2) 6 packs of ramen noodles 2.00

With tax this comes out to ~$11.00. With the remainder I'd probably pick up some kind of inexpensive meat or some other inexpensive items (store brand mac & cheese) to round it out. I know you asked for recipes but it's kinda hard (for me anyhow) if we're just assuming you have certain things in your kitchen beyond salt and pepper. Like, do you have flour, baking powder, brown sugar, stuff like that? How about onion or garlic powder?

Thats ok..she can grab her designer handbag and fresh hairdo and slip on her heels to go down to the food bank. I'm sure the woman with 2 starving kids who was beaten by her husband before being throw out onto the street would be HAPPY to give up her share of the food to help someone in OBVIOUS need.

Who's your daddy now? (couldnt resist)

But wait..relevance to the original topic..hmmm..ok..

Angel hair pasta, generic: $.95
butter, $2
oregeno,generic, $1
frozen peas,generic,$1.50
romaine lettuce, $2 a head
carrots, $2 a bunch
chicken breast, $4 a pound
salad dressing, generic, $2
cucumbers, $2
oatmeal,generic, $3

breakfast and pasta with salad..enough to last for days

Back in college I ate lots of rice and soy sauce!

My cheap and easy meal now:
Bag of pasta.
Can of italian style stewed tomatoes.
Maybe cut up some canned olives and mushrooms, and toss them into the mix.

Spaghetti that's better than Prego!

Homemade Bisquick recipe:

9 cups flour
1/3 cup baking powder
1 tbs salt
1 lb shortening or butter

Cut the shortening/butter into the dry ingredients using a food processor, pastry blender or you can do it the old fashion way by scissoring 2 butter knives. Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a month. You can use this to make biscuits, pancakes, coffee cake, dumplings, or any other recipe that calls for Bisquick.

*Note, I have not made this recipe in quite some time but we did make it in my home ec class and the stuff we cooked with it came out very well! Actually, I may try it myself soon since I like to make homemade stuff anyhow. :) Anyhow, I found this particular recipe on a site that might interest you (and others!) Their promo is "recipes for a $3/day budget"

Dumperstive. No joke. There's actually good food perfectly packaged and safe in there if you know where to look. I had to do it when I was REALLY poor. Too poor even to do my roots! The shame, I know! Luckily I also found hairdye in the dumpster, so I could be pretty. *hee*

Not to be mean..but I wouldnt suggest doing that. There are people out there who are really in need and starving to death who need the food from these places. It isnt fair for someone to take it who has the money...just wants to spend it on her hair color instead. Leave the charities for the people truly in need.

Besides..there are tons of great ideas for cheap recipies here. Plenty to get you by for 10 days

Oh...I don't always pay attention to everything...I thought she was in need.

Yeah if you can buy hair dye....you can buy food.

Ramen, bread and cheese, tortillas and beans, in-season fruits n veggies, (farmer's market nearby?), beans, frozen juice in a can. I've been dirt-poor before and this is how I got by.

You may have to clip coupons. Out here we have a Food 4 Less. Do you have discount grocery stores?

For a while I'd try and save money by going to "free stuff" websites. I'd fill out their surveys and receive free condoms, razors, coupons, etc. Like I said, I was very poor.

My mom fed a family of 4 on $20 a week when my brother and I were LITTLE... trying to think of some of the meals...My mom would make meals where the leftovers made a whole new meal the next night...

First - shop at one of those cheap stores like Pak N Save or Food Maxx (dont know what ones they have there) Pak N Save is owned by Safeway. Same stuff but cheaper.

Cheap meals... didnt add veggie. We would have frozen veggies - 1/2 a bag per day or salad. But you do have potatos and carrots and could use those for your veggie with the meals. Its a bit more than $20 a week but I think 2 could easily eat on $30. $20 may be pushing it but if you shop wisely you should be able to do it. Heres a list of an example week of what I grew up with.

Lunches would be the lunch meat with leftover french rolls or top ramen.

Shopping List $30

Hamburger 1 lb $4
Roast $5
Bag of Potatos $2
Bag of Baby Carrots $2
French Onion Soup $1
French Rolls (pack of 6) $2
Bullion $1
Whole Chicken $4
Mushroom soup $1.50
Rice $1
Noodles (Fettuccini or Linguini) $1
Box of hamburger helper $1
Lunch meat $3
Top Ramen 4/$1

Monday
1 lb hamburger - cook drain
add water, flour, S&P, bullion - stir until thick (makes a gravy)
put over mashed potatoes

Tues
Pot Roast
Potatos
Baby Carrots
French Onion Soup

Put roast, cut up potatos, carrots and soup into dish - stick in oven
After it cooks drain and with the drained soup/juices add bullion and flour to make gravy

Wed
use leftover from Monday for SOS (shit on a shingle)
put gravy/ham mix over toasted french roll

Thurs
French dips with leftover roast (from Tues)
French Rolls
Make Au Jus with Water and Bullion

Friday

Put whole chicken and LARGE size can of mushroom soup into crockpot. Cook on high 6 hours (great make in the morning eat later meal)
Chicken falls off the bone...
Put over cooked rice

Saturday

Option is Hamburger helper

Sunday

Friday chicken leftovers over noodles

EDIT TO ADD: Even if she is a troll I think this thread is really handy. Im always looking for cheaper alternatives to healthy meals and some of these are really good!

To all the people that have been mean, rude, and making fun of me, I don't understand what your problem is. I started this thread because I wanted to get some cheap recipes, not listen to a bunch of trollish comments. I never once said I was in NEED. I said, I wanted to be CHEAP. I can afford food, I just want to spend it on other things. What's wrong with wanting to eat cheap? I would never asked for a handout or want to take anything from a church. I asked for CHEAP recipes! Calling me high maintenance and suggesting I have designer handbags is rediculous. Not once on this forum have I talked about owning designer anything. I shop at Wal-mart, I do my own nails, I do my own hair, I drive a 1981 Dodge with a crumpled fender that cost me $100. I bought that car because it was CHEAP, I like to live CHEAP! Like I already said, if I didn't dye my hair, which costs $15 because I do it at HOME, That would still leave me with what, $35, which still means I need to eat cheap. As far as making snide little comments about my Dad, that's fucked up! You don't know me and you don't need to be talking about my daddy. I can't run and ask my daddy for money, he passed away 2 years ago and I miss him everyday. And even if he was alive, I wouldn't ask him for money. I have money, I just want to spend as little on food as possible.

Calling me a troll--WTF? Why would you be calling someone who's asking for recipes a troll? If anybodies a troll it's the people making rude mean and sarcastic comments on this thread. I mean WTF, if you don't have a recipe or anything useful to say, then don't post. And if you don't like me or what I have to say, use the ignore function! Simple as that.

For the people that wrote recipes and gave me ideas on where to get cheap food, thanks! Some of those recipes sound really good. I would make them even if I wasn't cheap. LOL I definitely will do the crockpot ones. I love my crockpot, I have a family size one so I can make double batches. Hey thanks, and let's try to keep this thread alive with ONLY cheap recipes and ideas where to get cheap food.:)

My mom used to chop up a hot dog in Lipton's chicken noodle soup in the winter. I thought it was pretty good and normal until I moved to the city and all my friends thought I was weird for liking it and swore they never had it as a child.

Try it though, it's pretty good. Possibly better then hot dog in kraft dinner.

I wont eat their meat (other than hamburger) but Winco... their meat isnt the best (hence why i dont buy it there) but its CHEAP CHEAP. It also depends on the cut you get. When I buy meat it has to have like NO fat or i will gag... i cant stand fat on anything... i wont eat it... wont take a bite... yuck

And Ive seen chickens on sale for as little as $2 - Raleys has those sales... theyre gone within a day tho because people will buy a BUNCH of them...

I buy all natural chickens for $6-7 - theyre small but all natural... i think yall are shopping at the wrong stores!

I've never had a problem with Winco meat but then I never eat it plain so maybe I don't notice. I always use ground meat for hamburger helper and sloppy joes and chicken for quesadillas etc. The only thing I've frequently had a problem with is the strawberries and that depends on where they came from. Sometimes they were good, more often a lot of them were mushy and moldy.

Smoothies are great. Get some frozen berries, some milk, some banana, maybe some yogurt throw it all in and voila. Or pretty much anything. My craziest smoothie made thus far had banana, canned peaches, strawberry jelly, a bit of chocolate slim fast, some milk, and some fat free cool whip and it was great LOL.

I dont know if they have Nugget stores where youre at. They used to be a regular store but have turned more Natural. Its like a mix between the reg Supermarket and Whole Foods. Thats where I get my meat and produce. But theyr boxed, frozen and canned stuff is 3x's the price as WinCo...

When I'm really broke I go with cup of soup (I like it better than ramen cause it's faster, more portion controlled, & has a few tiny veggies) & then I start going through canned goods & eating stuff out of those. Everyone I know has a stockpile of canned goods. Maybe we're just lucky though.

I have a fuckton of creamed corn too. I always buy creamed corn when I'm at the grocery. I love it and sometimes I just have a can of that for dinner (with a squirt of sriracha in it, mm-mm!)... but recently I noticed it has sugar in it and I'm trying to cut out all flour and sugar, so I haven't had any. But I'm still in the habit of buying it, so I have a huge stash of creamed corn. I should make some corn casserole with it soon.

cameron_keys

mmm..creamed corn...I havent had that in forever! Yummy!

Being hurricane season we have a bunch of canned stuff. I loathe most canned veggies though...so they are here for emergency purposes ONLY!

Esp when you can get a bag of generic frozen veggies...or even fresh veggies if theres a produce market nearby for nearly the same as canned..which is MUCH tastier and healthier.

When I was really hurting for money I ate mostly veggies, pasta, rice and PB&J.

Sorry hun, but I agree with them, you can get wormer from the store for cheap, and wait a while to do your roots. Hell if your mechanically inclined like I tend to be, you could fix your own brakes for parts cost w/o labor charges. It only takes a few hours tops anyway, lol.
