Hubby wants to write a book about
being married to a stripper. we wonder if it'd sell? hopes to call it,"Married To The Pole", "tails from a stripper's husband" (not tales, tails, get it?). he's kept detailed diaries/stories from our 3 years in the business, including some over the top sexy bits he's witnessed at our club. it'd start of with how we met, a very cool story itself since im from a 3rd world country and he's twice my age, then have chapters on how i got started dancing, special events from fun nites, the wierd regulars, guys who fell in love w/ me, the girls we know, the a-team vs. b-team girls, stripper niches, (i.e. exotic types, older girls, spinners, barbie blonds, hairy pussys, punk types, tattoed types, etc.) surely also a chapter defending us from the common "all strippers are dope heads, abused kids, whores." attitudes. we wonder if its allowed to use girls stage names, since these aren't their real names? how bout the clubs real name? sounds like a fun project but a lot of work. whata ya'll think?
Re: Hubby wants to write a book about
it wouldn't sell, but any print on demand publisher (like iuniverse) would take it.
books about stripping can get published, but they don't really sell much. and these days mainstream publishers would be reluctant to touch such a book.
Re: Hubby wants to write a book about
I would buy it!! I love real life stripper stories.

They much rather hear about the girls doing lines off each other's tits and sleeping with each other and any guy who happens along.
Then how do you explain the success of books like Strip City, by Lily Burana, or any of the other first person accounts of stripping? I haven't read one yet that sugarcoated it.

uh, the only stripper-memoir to sell enough copies to cover its advance and then some was about a stripper-next-door who never drank or did drugs and was stripping her way through college.
it's called "ivy league stripper".
curiously enough-- perhaps its own stereotype, the very stripper-stories that DO NOT SELL but which get published feature strippers having drug problems or other difficulties.
stuff that is ABOUT strippers, like 'secrets of the strip club' and whatnot also don't sell, although a few things in that line get published. because people don't care much about customer/bouncer/husband reminiscing.
getting published is also not the same as earning out your advance.
Re: Hubby wants to write a book about
comparing movies to books is a little weird, then.
there's a whole separate set of stereotypes about nonfiction stripping books, the biggest of which is that they are/were successful and sold lots of copies.
Re: Hubby wants to write a book about
I'm shopping book deals right now, what I'm finding is that you have to have a different angle. You also have to get the deal first, then write the book....b/c the publishers want to have some say in the direction and content.
There are TONS of REALLY BAD stripper books out there. I think the worst I read was written by a bouncer from Cheetahs who told his side of the story. Everyone wants to write a life story on what its like to be a stripper, but no one really wants to pay money to buy a book about it. Except for me....I bought all of them to see what was already in print and how mine could be different.
His best choice is starting a blog (that's what I did). People like to read about strippers' lives for free, and he can send publishers links to it so they can preview what he has to say and if they're interested they'll bite.
good luck!

Re: Hubby wants to write a book about
Actually, I think it would be a fun read, depending on how good a writer he is. Really, his skill as a writer is what's going to make or break this idea. I'm picturing it as a humorous, light-hearted book. I think that could be good. Anything that takes itself too seriously would be lame.
I like the blog idea. He could practice his skills, develop a fan base, see what type of material is best received, and then use it to market his idea to publishers.
Re: Hubby wants to write a book about
I second the blog idea. Why? Then you can build up a fan base and eventually publish a book based upon it. Plenty of people have done this esp. in re sex workers (escorts)... there are more than a few that started out blogging their work/life and then it ended up being published in a book.
http://belledejour-uk.blogspot.com/ is a great example.
Re: Hubby wants to write a book about
If you get a strong PR person behind you, it'd sell. That's what it mostly is.
Or you'd have to find some way to create a stir or buzz on your own.
Sex tape comes to mind (because it's always a sex tape nowadays). But it'd have to be with someone famous. And I have no idea what your marital relationship is like so that might not even work.

Exactly what I was thinking. Since its gonna be from his perspective, it would suck if it was all sleazy and serious. Oh, and it would be super annoying if he acted like a total know-it-all about what its like to be a stipper.

plus, we are supposed to provide a fantasy. if it becomes too commonplace, it isn't as good for us.

That's already happening! Have you seen how many women are in the clubs as customers, just hanging out with their SOs? A woman in the 70s-90s might divorce her husband if she knew he were there! I wish it were mysterious and forbidden again - more money for us, less amateurish dancers!
