Emily: Here's a reason to dig Philly.
I can't remember what thread it was, but I remember you saying recently that you liked Philadelphia as a city to work in, but you weren't so crazy about living there.
Well, your city did something pretty fucking cool IMO. In protest of The Boy Scouts of America's ban on gay scouts, they decided to start charging the Scout's downtown building the fair market rent rate of $200,000 instead of their previous rate of $1.
Suck it, homophobes.

wow makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :) The mayor gets a lot of shit, but he scores big here.
Re: Emily: Here's a reason to dig Philly.
There was an blurb about this on KYW on my ride home last night. Apparently someone on city council chastised the Mayor for it, because it will have an impact on children, etc. I'm fairly sure some other city did this before, or maybe this was just threatened here previously. I know I've heard of it before. I really don't see BSA changing their policies, though. An enormous part of their member base comes from churches, Mormons in particular. We all know how they feel about the gays. (I'm an Eagle Scout, btw. A fun little tidbit most wouldn't suspect. I was also a Director at a summer camp in FL for a couple of years, right before I became an SCDJ. Just a teeny transition. I disagree heartily with many aspects of Scouting's ideology, but the other parts were fun.)

Yeah, it's the Mayor's fault that the Boy Scouts are anti-gay...
Re: Emily: Here's a reason to dig Philly.
^^ No, they were chastising the mayor for the new policy because they didn't think the Scouts should be punished for discriminating.
I have a high school friend who was an Eagle Scout. He happens to be gay, and also happens to be financially very successful. Every year the BSA come around trying to fundraise and every year he takes pleasure in telling them where they can stick it as long as they maintain their current policies.

I'm from philly and I love gay people!
I heard recently that they were trying to change the name of the gayborhood to the diversity loop or something. I stay stick with gayborhood! ( i lived in this area for 3 years and never felt safer)
Re: Emily: Here's a reason to dig Philly.
I used to live in the Gayborhood!! Didn't care for the rest of Philly (esp. scary ass North Philly), but Gayborhood fucking rocked!!
Diversity loop? Stop it. ::)
Re: Emily: Here's a reason to dig Philly.
Emily and I worked in the gayborhood for years. Felt fairly safe there. Then again, I feel fairly safe in all of philly, even the west philly ghetto in which I live.
and that is FUCKING AWESOME! thanks for sharing Liz.
Re: Emily: Here's a reason to dig Philly.
I dunno, seems the real "victims" of this punishment will be the kids who suddenly won't have a place to hold their meetings and such because they can't afford the rent. I think the city could've handled it better.
Re: Emily: Here's a reason to dig Philly.
I lived in the gayberhood too, I loved it. I feel more safe there then in my snobby ass neighborhood in Annapolis, MD. This is a good article. Philly is the best city..:(
