Aw, I was hoping for a video. Fuck Oral Roberts, fuck him right in the ear.
Can you say "Oral Roberts" and not giggle a little?
What i wanna know is: What kind of person can hold an innocent little baby in their arms... and name it "Oral?"
Correct me if I am wrong, but did he ever get that 8 million or whatever, or god was going to "call him home?" I don't think he did. Oh, hypocrisy, thy name is Oral. And yet 5,000+ still gave him a standing ovation. It just makes me sad. I don't feel like googling the details, honestly.
I saw a televangelist on TV at a bar the other night. It was Creflo Dollar. THERE'S a name for ya. Anyway, the tv was on one little speaker, but the music from the jukebox was on all the big ones. Creflo praisin' the Lard made Linkin Park's "What I've Done" immensely entertaining. It was almost a decent remix, since he was workin' his Jesus mojo during all the quiet bits in the song. I love to listen to the crazy AM preacher stations while driving through the South, but MrsC can't take it.
Chris, you are talking to a southern preacher's grandaughter who knows a lot about the evangelical leaders in the south. Let me hip you to some shit:
1) Yes, it's true that Oral said the Lord was gonna call him home if he didn't get the money. And YES he got the fuckin' money. :banghead:
2) Creflo Dollar is SO fucking popular, rappers refer to him in their songs. Also, the church requires all members to submit a w-2 form so they can confirm that all members are contributing 10% (tithes). If you do not pay your ten percent, you WILL receive a bill from the church.
P.S. There are ATM machines INSIDE the church.
Gotta love it. I don't care what anyone says, God IS a business.
-1960: Roberts claimed that God had told him to make His healing power known throughout the earth.
-1977: Roberts said he had received a vision from God telling him to build the City of Faith. He later claimed to have seen a 900-foot-tall Jesus who told him that the vision would soon be realized and that the hospital would be a success. The City of Faith opened in 1981.
-1983: Roberts announced that Jesus had appeared to him in person and commissioned him to find a cure for cancer (Time, July 4, 1983).
-1986: Roberts said God had told him, ‘I want you to use the ORU medical school to put My medical presence in the earth. I want you to get this going in one year or I will call you home. It will cost $8 million and I want you to believe you can raise it.’ (Abundant Life, Jan/Feb. 1987).
-January 1987: Roberts said God had told him . . . he had to raise $8 million by March 1 or God would take him home. Roberts said the money would be used to provide full scholarships for medical missionaries who would be sent to Third World countries. . . He said $3.5 million had been raised and all he needed was $4.5 million before March 1 that year.
-April 1, 1987: Roberts announced that he had raised $9.1 million -- $1.1 million more than needed. Of the money raised, $1.3 million was given by a dog track owner, Jerry Collins.
-November 1987: Roberts announced that the City of Faith medical clinic will close in three months.
-January 1988: Roberts canceled the university’s free medical tuition program despite his claim that God had told him to make the medical school a world outreach program.
-March 1988: The medical scholarship fund went bankrupt. Students were required to repay scholarship funds at 18 percent annual interest if they transferred to another school rather than stay at ORU medical school and start paying the high tuition.
-September 1989: Roberts decided to close the medical school and the City of Faith hospital to pay off debts."

^^That's a cool article. But do you think they would ever shut down ORU?
I don't think so.
Ya'll got me cracking up with the Oral and the Kool-Aid and the Dolla-dolla Bill and the W-2s. If I wasn't from the south I'd swear you were telling stories.
When I was driving through Tulsa earlier this month, I passed by the ORU campus and saw the tall office tower that used to be City of Faith hospital. It looked eerily empty. I couldn't say the same for the Indian casino just down the road.
Weird thing was that I didn't know at the time that a major scandal was rocking the place.
Mo'Kelly:
"...And most importantly, we can assume the husband of Freakmama, Richard Roberts’ a$$ is going to jail. Nice to know that Oral and family are still doing “God’s work” and charging people a price for their services…even twenty years later. Say goodbye to Oral Roberts University. It’s one late-night text message to one more underage…uh…ahem…male “friend” from becoming a state park."
I agree with you, 'Cesca, it probably won't be closed...
However, I would like to see ORU deprivatized, renamed and operated as a state university. I'd also like to see justice served as follows:
1. Dick Roberts should be incarcerated and his butthole :moon: designated a "state park"
2. Mrs. “Freakmama” Lindsay Roberts should be prosecuted for her lewd acts :phone: with underage minors, placed on probation and given diversion to a sexual addiction treatment program...
If they were less prominent, the criminal charges would have already been filed against these caricatures of greed and lust. ::)
The Lord works in delirious ways...
Damn skippy. But evangelicals are VERY powerful and a very vocal, intimidating set of people. I don't thing that anyone would get the balls up to try to make ORU into a state school. The evangies would tell you the God would be pissed off about that.
Also, why does everyone in these churches lie on God (or whatever higher power there is)? And when someone in the church gets negative feedback about some bullshit THEY did, why is the criticizer the devil? Actually, I know the answer to these questions. The REAL question is: why are so many people dumb enough to listen?
That's a whole 'nother thread though... ::)
Hah!!!!
Poor old man Oral. So luridly accused!!!
Hooray for church scandals. On another note, I just started watching the Salt N Pepa show.....anyone else wonder what Salt would think?
Anyone read up on this scandal? It appears Mrs. Roberts was having a few extracurriculars with some colledge-boys.
I wonder if they involved 'calling upon the lord.'
^^Yes, there was also some "laying on of hands" and "speaking in tongues". :rotfl:
Church people are the biggest pervs. ::)
