Photographers I need your help
I have a straight photography assignment and apparently my stuff sucks :( Too picturesk (sp?) and too pretty, it's easy to do pretty she said to me so after she crushed me I am having one hell of a fucking time taking good pictures, any who I was wondering if you could give me your sincere opinion. Which one of these 2 suck less!

Re: Photographers I need your help
I'm not a photographer but personally I like the first one better!

Re: Photographers I need your help
I like the first one too. And WTF is up with your shitty unprofessional teacher? The lighting and composition in that first one, just amazing. It most certainly is not "easy" to do "pretty." What, does she want you taking ugly pictures or something?
Re: Photographers I need your help
I think what she meant when she said it's "easy to do pretty" is that it kind of is easy to take simple, straightfoward, "perfect" pictures. I went to art school and I learned that you have to take leaps. Don't be "safe" when you take pictures. Be adventurous. Try every angle you can think of. Be dangerous. "Pretty" in the art field is sometimes not a great thing...sometimes "ugly" can actually make for a great piece of art...get what I'm sayin?
Ex: You ever been looking through a magazine and come across an ad with an ugly ass girl with big lips or something? And you wonder "How the hell is she a model..."? Kind of the same deal. Art has to stand out. "Pretty" doesn't always stand out.
Re: Photographers I need your help
hard choice id have to go with teh second one as teh first one has some sort of random obstruction on the right side is it straight up or digital manipulation? id love to see the second one in hdr
ez
Re: Photographers I need your help
Does it have to be of that subject matter? If it were me, I would like throw a little red paint on that thing in the picture or something crazy.
Re: Photographers I need your help
Honestly, I'm going to go with the 2nd one. The first one looks like exactly what your teacher doesn't want. Pretty.
Re: Photographers I need your help
She ordered me no animals, no children, no babies, no normal basically, so I'm screwed. I'm having a hard time liking things to photograph :( I went for a walk yesterday so I took these... She has to like something right?

Re: Photographers I need your help
Critiques on your artwork can be really hard to take. I remember in one of my later photography classes my professor really crushed my photos and made me cry in class. I later learned that if he hadnt done that, my work wouldnt have improved.
I like the second photo better than the first, for these reasons. it seems to me more abstract, nice use of composition (a bigger negative space, ie the black) and the object off center. The light source is also nice, highlighting the cobwebs. it's just more aesthetically pleasing to me.
good luck! keep up the hard work, it will pay off
Re: Photographers I need your help
Of all, I like the first one best.
It is truly unique, not just a snapshot you took walking down the road.
Maybe it is because I'm a guy and find the mechanical pix intersting.
Re: Photographers I need your help
It was in my garage and I was sitting waiting for my dog to come in and the sun came through the window and it caught my attention.
Re: Photographers I need your help
Good catch! It is obviously a motor and a pully. Almost looked like my old Shopsmith. Keep up the good work!!
Re: Photographers I need your help
I like the first one better. More context. The objects within it follow the rule of thirds better, if one cares about such things. I like the belt in the first one having more of the material in focus.
i like negative space, but more so when the object is accentuated by that negative space. The second shot doesn't achieve that for me. If negative space were important for that shot, i'd actually want the pulley brought farther to the left to produce even more of it.
The first photo is a very nice shot. But I'm not your teacher.
Re: Photographers I need your help
The "no chicks" part is the worst prohibition! Too bad...
As for the photo sets. Set#1. 1st for the reasons already mentioned.
Set#2. A couple of observations/suggestions...
- Mushroom close-up. Move back a tad. Not enough context. Just funghi and a few blades of grass.
- Tree trunk with funghi. Better composition than the 1st. But no contrasting textures. Background texture is much like the foreground tree trunk, only different colors. I might try a different angle and more of a closeup on trunk/fungus, keeping the color in the background
- Shed. Move out. Even though shed is primary subject, as a subject it's uninteresting. However, its relationship with the background may be more interesting, and is the real subject of the photo.
- Used books. Also here, the subject seems framed too tightly. Sometimes what's unseen but suggested is more important than what's seen. Here there's not enough to suggest what's unseen. Either more of the background beyond the building, or an angle from the left looking right toward the same scene, with the unseen wall in perspective, and hints of what's in the bookstore window or might be.
Good luck, but mainly have fun. Take lots of photos, experiment by walking around a subject or a view, getting different angles.

HHL... Let us know what pictures you used and how your project came out!
Re: Photographers I need your help
Try the first pic in black and white and see how it looks .
Re: Photographers I need your help
Huh that was strange! I thought I posted yesterday after class! WTH? must of hit post quick reply and it didn't go through, any who, she wasn't impressed. It's ok though, I still want to learn more and perhaps it's just something that will take a LONG time.
On a happier not I have a landscaping project and this is what I have so far...
I know it may not be great but this was my first time doing this path thing and damn it it took me 3 hrs to do but I did it!

Re: Photographers I need your help
Sorry for the size but if it's not big it's hard to see. Those are my boys playing in the back yard and I am going to place wings on their backs. The assignment is to make a fake picture, a fantasy picture and make it seem real. I am also going to place 2 more pics in there of the boys playing, one will be kicking the moon, I took this from a plane http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...s/IMG_3917.jpg
and the other I am not sure yet but because I need a minimum of 3 of my own images I can't just stop at that one that I did, I actually like it as is but oh well. What ya think?
Re: Photographers I need your help
You take and make some interesting pictures. Keep up the good work and keep posting!
Re: Photographers I need your help
That picture is really neat, and the fall colors complement that "fairytale" feel nicely. I might think about passing the burn tool over the little people, 1 or 2% at a time, just to bring the bright white down a bit and make them blend a little more. Or, say, clone the bark or some other ambient field about 1 or 2% at a time to blend a little. Then if I didn't like it, it's easy not to save. The picture has a very special look to it as it is.
Re: Photographers I need your help
Thanks. I will go to the school tomorrow and do more to the picture and I'll show you guys :D
