Mariane Pearl and Angelina Jolie
Did anyone else think it was odd that Angelina Jolie played Mariane Pearl (a black woman and widow of murdered reporter Daniel Pearl) in the movie "A Mighty Heart"?
I guess she was bi-racial but still - she's obviously Black. There's no way someone would think she was white or even bi-racial for that matter. I just thought it was odd and I thought of this after reading the NY Post today.
Re: Mariane Pearl and Angelina Jolie
I thought about that a bit too, but then I saw an interview and it said something to the effect that the two women had become very close and good friends, so it seemed natural.
They did change AJ's hair and skin tone a bit for the movie it looked like.
Re: Mariane Pearl and Angelina Jolie
Mariane Pearl asked Angelina to play her. They became good friends before production.
I mean, I can see how it could be controversial. But it was Mariane's decision. Angelina does get a pretty deep tan, brown contacts, and curly hair for the film. And regardless, it was an extraordinary performance. Very, very powerful. It's too bad not more people saw the movie, because if it had found more of an audience, I'm sure she'd get nominated. But what's important was the message. If you're playing a real person, and if you're friends with that person...I mean, if she asked Jolie to portray her, and she trusted her, what was there to say? "Oh, maybe we should ask Kerry Washington, because...?"
But I get what you're saying.
