Anyone studying to be a Vet? Need advice...
Today my lil' yorkie Pheobe was playing with my other yorkie Gavin. They were jumping up on the couch and rolling around, when Phoebe fell off and bumped her head ( I have hard wood floors). She started having a seizure, lost controll of her bladder...eyes rolled back. I freaked! I know what to do for people, but not for dogs. I immediatly called our local vet (her actual vet is too far). My other dog sees the local vet, so when I brought her in, she was just coming out of her seizure. The fucking receptionist knew why I was there, but was more concerned with how to spell my dogs name, when she was born, where I got her from...ect...I freaked out and said..."Can we check out my pup first BEFORE we go through these needless details!?"
Whatever happend to treat first, ask questions later?
So she was given a cortizone shot, and $80 later I was set away. I am still concerned as she will not stop throwing up, she is super tired. I KNOW she has a concussion. BUt I don't know what else to do for her. I am taking her to her vet tomorrow. I pulled out my O2 tank and gave her some oxygen for a bit when we got home.
I am so pissed right now at my vet office for not treating her right away, that I am going to speak to the Vet Clinic owner and pull my other animal from their care. Obviously, they care more about $$$, than the welfare of the animal in need.
Sorry, but I needed to vent about this too!
Re: Anyone studying to be a Vet? Need advice...
Since you called ahead with an emergency..they should have taken her immediatly into triage and started treatment and exam. You could have given your info to the receptionist WHILE they were already working on her. Thats what any hospital I've worked at would have done. Not to mention that a dog having seizures after a blow to the head would have been put on IV fluids,x-rayed and kept under observation overnight.
Hopefully you got her to a better vet today...??
Re: Anyone studying to be a Vet? Need advice...
There are a lot of VERY shitty veterinary practices out there. They should not have sent home a dog that was seizuring...your dog should have been placed under supervision for at least 24 hours.
I worked for a vet for three years...We got several animals that were given such poor care, even though we tried to help them, they often died due to shitty medical treatment from elsewhere. When it's an emergency, it's hard to be selective, I know...But trust your instincts. Don't let them bully you, and by all means get a second opinion if someone is being sketchy (that includes all the staff, like that boneheaded receptionist).
I can't believe they didn't even do xrays. Man.
I hope your dog is better soon!

Please update! And if you haven't already done so, go to another Vet! My yorkie had a concussion about a year ago, but NO SEIZURE and they STILL insisted on keeping him overnight for observation. I really hope your little guy is alright after some obviously craptacular veterinary care.
Follow your instincts and watch your dog like a hawk.....concussions can be serious, resulting in brain swelling, which can prove fatal......watch for things like staggering, stumbling, vomiting and listlessness.....(what I remember my vet telling me to be on the lookout for last year) Your little dog is in my thoughts!

Here's an update....
Pheobe is doing much better. After I got her home, she was still puking whenever she moved. I sat with her and held her while I gave her blow-by O2. She didn't eat anything or pee for hours, let alone poo. I have watched her like a hawk all week. I took her to her other vet the next day and they did a complete check out and they only charged me for the initial visit...$30! The doc was great and explained everything to watch for, what to do...ect...
I am going to call the other vet and tell them what horrible service it was, and how they put my pups health at risk for not giving her immediate care. I will be transferring all my animals to this vet. He is worth the 45min drive.
She has been really quiet and justs wants me to hold her and cuddle her. She is gradually getting back into play mode though, but she follows me everywhere!
I don't know what I would have done if I had lost her. It was so scary. Now I feel like an overprotective mother!
