How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
I'm looking at www.ratemyprofessors.com and reading about certain teachers I might consider taking this spring. Some raters give excellent scores and no comments and the same goes for horrible scores too. I know I can take most with a grain of salt. Have you ever had a teacher on there rated highly only to find out they were totally different?
I'm having a real hard time planning my classes next semester. Also, choosing a good teacher is very important to me. I will either end up going to work only fri-sun because all the classes are between 3-5 units. Plus, all are like M-TH for at least 2-3 hours for each class! I want to take more classes but I don't want to be broke either.
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
ive had a teacher rated horribly and i absolutely loved her.
and then my nutso teacher now has great ratings at her old school and look how that turned out...:O
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
i think it depends upon the school and how much you value the opinions of your fellow students. if you feel like those around you are mostly slackers, then i'd take a teacher rated 'really tough' with a grain of salt. if you think your classmates are hard workers and mostly achievers, then i'd put more faith in it. I think it has a lot to do with your specific institution and how well you feel you fit in.
... is it wrong i swore the thread said 'rapemyprofessor?' :O hmmm.... well, i mean, if there's ConSenT and all... (sorry, i seem to have had a rash of cuties recently!!! just thinkin' out loud..)
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
I only go by it if they have a lot of ratings. That way you can see what people on your own 'level' rate them as. My fave prof (other than having the tamale for hotness!) has everything from rave reviews (mostly from those who are obvious majors or fans of the subject) to people who definitely thought the subject is easy and were wrong-bOO Teh prOF iZ too HRAD, etc.
If it's your major, look for people with perspective. If it's a core class you aren't thrilled on, you might need to take it all into account. I've found it to be a fairly accurate site.
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
pickaprof.com was very good, but they charge money. It's worth it, IMHO. They give the class averages and stuff.
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
Oooh, never heard of pickaprof!! Wish I'd have known about that.
But yeah, the slackers get on ratemyprofessor and bitch and moan about having to do actual work. I only rely on it if there is a paragraph written that sounds like a good student wrote it.
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
Pretty much everything I'm taking is in my major now. Does anyone think that 11am is too early for class? I would have to be there by 10:30 to find a spot. Its a junior college so at least half are slackers. In fact in my pre-calc class we started with 47 and now there are just over half of that left.
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
^personally, I prefer earlier classes because I get a much better parking spot :P
as far as ratemyprofessor goes, I've found it to be rather accurate. Most of the raters at my school leave pretty detailed descriptions with their rating. And yes it does influence who I choose for a professor.
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
This website always helped me pick out my teachers. I wish I had known about it the whole time I was in school, but I didn't find out about it until my last year.

Same here.
Back in the stone age, when I was in school, we did not have web sites but did have a group that accepted rating for the professors and I never could use the ratings to tell if I was going to like a professor.
I do agree what you need to have professors that you click with like any relationship.
What I did was to schedule an extra class each semester with the plan to drop the professor I least liked before the last drop / add date. I could get a good feel about a professor after 3-4 classes and never had a semester where I felt I needed to drop 2 of them.
I do not know this could work for you. Is there any way you could audit some of the professor's you want to look at classes this semester before you have to schedule next semester?
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
I use pickaprof.com, they don't charge...at least they haven't charged me... My favorite Spanish teacher has HORRIBLE ratings, because, well, he's not an easy A. However, some of the ratings are helpful, at least in telling you what you're in for.
Re: How do you feel about ratemyprofessor?
It's always been accurate for me. Ask your classmates in your classes this semester, too.
11am is the earliest I would go, lol. :) I have a 10:30 class right now and I want to kill myself when I work the night before... Like now... Oh shit, I'm late!
