Whoops, did I do something really bad?
This morning at 7:20am my grocery store boss calls me and asks if I can come in for an 8 hour shift starting at 9:45am instead of the 4-8pm I'm scheduled for. I would have jumped all over that-had I gotten sleep. I said 'well, I just went to bed at 4:30am, so..." and she said "Ok, well just come in at your scheduled shift."
I was up so late because R and I were having some issues we were trying to work through. If I had had just a bit more sleep I would have said yes to work.
Was that really bad? I mean the last 3 times she requested I come in I said yes and came in and this is the first time I couldn't. I figured 2 hours of sleep only would render me useless to learn.
Should I just do my best to accept offers to work from now on?
I would have done what the trainer suggested to do when we can't go in and that's use the caller id to screen calls because she said it looks better to not answer than to answer and decline, but my effing MIL always answers the phone! And I was asleep,so it's not like I could tell her no.

Re: Whoops, did I do something really bad?
I don't think thats bad, if you cover shifts alot I don't think they'll mind. You obviously put in an effort before.
Re: Whoops, did I do something really bad?
Nope, that wasn't bad at all. Your life doesn't revolve around your job and employers know that. Besides, they don't expect you to work an eight hour day on a few hours of sleep. Now....if your scheduled shift had been for 9:45 and you went to bed at 4:30 then called in and blew the shift....THAT would have looked bad.
Re: Whoops, did I do something really bad?
as long as you say yes to extra shifts more often than you say no, you Boss will appreciate you and better things will come. Your Boss has enough people willing to do the minimum already.
Re: Whoops, did I do something really bad?
Yeah don't sweat it, that can't be that huge a deal especially if you've already accomodated their scheduling needs before.
Re: Whoops, did I do something really bad?
You've already come in early 3 times and you just started? I t might be good to turn a few down, so you don't become the ONLY girl they call in, because they think you're a pushover.
Re: Whoops, did I do something really bad?
Well, she wanted to me to come in for an interview last week, I said yes to the first time she asked because it was best for her.
She called and asked me to come do new hire paperwork an hour from when she called; I rushed and came in.
She asked me to work 4-8pm today when I was in on Monday, I said no problem.
I usually am very willing to cover shifts, I just did not anticipate her calling and asking me to come in for a different shift than I am scheduled for today.
Re: Whoops, did I do something really bad?
I would avoid answering work calls as well, let the calls go to voice mail. I think its good to accept extra shift, and decline shifts. It shows them you are dedicated, but wont let them walk over you. :)
Re: Whoops, did I do something really bad?
Ok, thanks guys :) I wasn't sure and whether or not I decline extra shifts or not is an issue with me because I feel guilty for not always taking them. This was especially true now since all new employees here start out on 'probation'.
