Dancers claiming right's to songs
Ok here's the deal.... I slowly and gradually brought my club into the computer age. We went from CD's ( club owned and Dancer provided ) to pretty much completely ripped to computer mp3's. I have amassed an astounding collection of music over the year's and still I get the .... " Thats my song .... why is sheee dancing to it " rant from some of the dancers. I have honestly made the mistake of allowing girls to bring in music so some of the music isn't mine personally and I feel the fault lie's mostly in that fact, but damn with 10's of thousands of songs at your disposal isn't this a little petty to say the least. I just wonder how everyone else's club's deal with this so I can have some direction to go in, in order to stop this drama ?????
Please any help appreciated

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
First girl to choose a set gets the song...sucks to be the rest!
You could make a dancer list...for your regular girls.
A few of the clubs I worked at had the same problem...they solved it by 1st gets it! Draws more girls to show up earlier.
There are only so many top 40 songs...40 to be exact...and most girls prefer the most popular songs!!
Would be rather boring to have every girl in the club dance to the same song!
Customers do like variety...and believe it or not...most don't like Top 40!!
As a feature....I rarely used Top 40..I preferred the customers choice. Ask them, they will tell you!

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
If a girl brings it into the club first, she should get dibs on it when she's working. That is more than reasonable. Just because it's now in your computer doesn't change the fact you got it from HER. So let her have it.
I don't get why so many people find this so hard to understand and work with. If we make the effort to bring in our own music, fucking let us keep it! Furthermore, if you've got a girl who does special sets to certain songs, then don't play those songs for other girls. It's REALLY not that hard to manage. Just remove your male "I don't get this stupid girly drama" bullshit from the equation and deal with it :P
It's pretty easy to make folders in your music files or DJ program with the girls names on them, and put their songs into those folders. You can put all their faves in the folders so all you have to do is open their folder and choose from that. That's what most DJs do. If a song is in Trixy's folder and she's working tonight, then Bella doesn't dance to it. Easy.

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
Anything that's a classic (AC/DC, Van Halen), a stripper staple (Kid Rock, Gwen Stefani), or currently in the Top 40 doesn't get to be owned. First come, first served.
Letting dancers bring music in isn't a mistake at all! Keeps it fresh. If a dancer is bringing in something obscure (not a popular club track or anything played on the radio, something the DJ and other dancers haven't heard of), then I agree with Bridgette. Same with anything she's mixed or edited for her particular needs. And in that case just play it from her CD or keep it in her file.
DJs, I am curious if you disagree with the above, and if so, please elaborate.

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
Personally I have always hated that so much . The music if for the customers too . I have wanted songs but maybe wasnt tipping the Dj enough so it went to someone else but thats fine . I was never a bitchy girl , like some ::)
You must be a nice DJ because its always the asshole DJs that encourage the girls catty behavior . IMO of course

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
-If a girl brings something PLAYABLE in, and I don't already have it, then it's hers. As several have mentioned, otherwise, it's first come first served. I also don't play songs twice a shift though, with rare exceptions. In certain other circumstances, like say a girl has a certain outfit/theme set worked out to a certain older/classic song, obviously I will save it for her. Oh, and running up before your shift in your street clothes and asking me for the 5 current hottest Top 40 songs? That doesn't count. Nope. I honestly try to avoid the "that's my song" behavior as much as possible, it's ridiculous. Most of our girls get along in that aspect, so it's rarely a problem.

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
I'm guilty of this. HOWEVER, I've been at my club the longest and I feel that the songs I dance to are mine. If a new girl comes in and gets MY songs that I have been dancing to FOREVER then I may get an attitude. Oops!
As for clearing this up I have nothing. Since I am the problem }:D

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
a girl who is a fantastic tipper gets her songs and keeps them, as long as she remains one of my better girls, if a girl bring the music in and its something i havent heard or istn a hit yet, she can have it till it wears out its welcome. girls who are really nice/personable/i get along with will get their songs a decent amount of the time but not all the time, girls who tip the minimum, get the mimimum level of service, there will be music playing while you are on stage.

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
I still would remove all the emotionalness to it.
Susan said it the best, and a girl that brings in her own music is great and you should play it just for her.
If I was a DJ, and a certain girl ALWAYS demanded I play her certain shit, and she was a horrible tipper, I would just yes her to death but play very little of her stuff and play mostly top 40 when she's on. If she ever asked why, I'd flat out tell her.
You do seem to have a little bit of a "These bitches. grumble grumble. Imma make them "pay" for just bein a girl in a sc, grumble grumble" complex. If this is not you, then just follow the advice posted in this thread!

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
Thank you everyone for the insight. I feel very strongly that someone with the initiative to create a " Theme Set " deserves an exclusive right to a music set that compliments that theme, basically giving her the right whether or not to allow someone to use that music on the basis that she intends to do her set sometime during the coarse of the evening ( intends being the operative word ). I am trying to eventually get to where " I " own all the music and will buy through either legal downloads or cd's anything anyone wants to dance to or hear. This I feel will alleviate my issues with power trip's and katty attitudes about anyones right to dance to particular songs.
The dilemma I face now is things like so and so left and said that all the music in her folder goes to me or I downloaded this and its all mine or I brought it in five minutes before anyone else did so it's mine ...... forever!!! The downloaded music is probably illegal, the music that so and so left and took her disc with her is for all intensive perposes illegal to keep on file and I just have a hard time giving someone exclusive rights for ever, just for being the first one to work the day a new cd comes out.
I would buy anything anyone wanted and even go as far as to give the requester like say a month of exclusive rights to the song but after that it would become a common song for everyone. I really think that if three or four girls like a song and want to dance to it, it's not really fair to the other's that one girl gets permanant exclusive right to said song.
Does this sound like a system you girl's would be happy working with?
Thanks
Bob

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
Ugh. Girls actually throw fits about this?! Suck it up, grow up and get over it. There are millions of songs out there and you cant think of anything other than this ONE to dance to. Give me a break. I think its stupid. YOURE the DJ. Set em straight.
I asked my DJ to find the Soulja Boi Travis Barker remix because I like the song. I havent worked since...oops. But I know he would only play it for me while Im there but its not a big deal. If I like the song it just gives me more incentive to sell a dance.
When I head a song I really like start Ill run up to anybody and say "C'Mon, lets dance, I LOVE this song." So I always get to dance to it anyway....

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
If another girl wants to dance to one of "my" songs...no problem. If I don't get a particular song tonight, I'll get it tomorrow, or the next night, or next weekend, or sometime. I'm sure I could think of at least 30 other songs I'd like to hear onstage.
The only time I'd be pissed is if a DJ was completely farming out one of my favorite songs--i.e. playing it always for other people and very rarely for me. Especially if it's something I brought in. But I tip well and most DJs I've worked with are awesome and fair and have never done that to me.

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
My policy is EXACTLY how Susan Put It....That is like word for word...LOL. I laugh at how many girls think that just because they managed to buy the new Chris Brown CD Or Fergie...etc. The day it came out (Or burned it) that no other girl can play it...
My collection Cd's and Cpu combined is Huge!! and it always seems i am playing the same 300 songs....

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
I think if somebody brought in a song it's just for them but if it's club property, it's not. Girls fight over silly shit ;)

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
i bring songs into the club. trust me though, they are playable and they work in the environment. my taste -is- alternative, but i'm wise enough not to completely alienate the average customer.
that being said, a few of those songs i brought in.. i -am- a bit possessive over. the dj has to tell girls repeatedly they can't dance to "glory box" by portishead. i didn't think it would be that popular amongst the other dancers, but apparently it is. maybe it's because i usually make massive tips when it's in my set. :P
that being said,
the songs i bring in are not generally (there are a few exceptions) new and they are usually songs i haven't heard 19 dancers use before. the songs i dance to that have always been popular with quite a few dancers (bowie's "fame", for instance) i don't expect to keep "my own".

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
^^ Thats a little different. When theyre unusual/different songs its one thing. What drives me nuts is when they fight over new releases... those shouldnt belong to anyone...
-
Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
yeah, top 40 is fair game; obscure songs are not! I had someone straight up "steal" not only certain songs but the damn themed set that went with them! It was funny in a psychotic SWF way. ::)

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
LoL I was featuring at a bar and this chick freaked out on me for using Prince - Cream with my Pussy Cat theme... she went into a rant about how thats HER song and no one, not even the damn feature dances to HER song ::)
No one owns any one song. Even if its not such a popular one. Did you write the song? Did you record it? Do you pay the licensing fee to use the song? No.
In western Canada the girls pay music licensing fees and we all dance to whatever the fuck we want, no one tries to claim music. Its nice to not have to worry about fighting for the right with other catty bitches to dance to whatever you want to.

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
Let's end this drama now once and for all.....the new rule = SWers' first...the rest can kiss our arse!!

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
A girl from one of my clubs does a themed set to "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham. She dresses up in costume for it, and customers come in and specifically request it. She's been doing it for 2 plus years. In a case like this (a lot of effort put into it, unconventional song, seniority) I think that the "that's my song" comments should be honored.

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
This is an old thread I know, but I'm currently having a slight song 'ownership' problem at my club and, if it is a somewhat popular song that wasn't bought into the club by a dancer and two dancers are fighting for it, shouldn't whoever tips the DJ more get to have it?
-
Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
Wow I guess I should clarify what I said before. I agree if it's a Top40 song or something really common in stripclubs no girl should OWN it - that's kinda absurd. I do think though, that if a girl brings it in first, she should get to play it first when she's working, for a couple weeks anyway - because as I said, she DID invest the money/effort to bring it in and the simple fact it's copied onto the club computer doesn't change that.
And if a girl goes to the trouble to find stuff that is more obscure and/or edits/mixes stuff specifically for her, she should ALWAYS own it for as long as she wants. No one goes to that kind of trouble for the benefit of other girls, and frankly such originality should be rewarded. Many customers, believe it or not, do appreciate the originality.
I would PARTIALLY agree with Zinaida that the girls who tip best should obviously get more of the music they like, even if it is the current #1 Billboard hit. Otherwise what are they paying for?

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
The thing is, it's that Zombies song Time of the Season. Our DJs are really into 60s-70s music and that one is pretty famous and the dancer I'm 'feuding' with did not bring it in. The DJs had it. I requested it and this broad throws a hissy fit. I have worked three shifts with this woman and all she dances to is stuff like System of a Down; modern metal. That's it. And now she's claiming psychedelic rock. If it was so totally her song like she made it out to be, why would the DJ have no problem playing it for someone else and why would she never dance to it or anything that sounds remotely like it. Even if she used to dance to it and say got tired of it doesn't mean no one else can have it ever.

Re: Dancers claiming right's to songs
I hope the music I bring when I start will be "my" music. I'm building my list and already feel protective over it. lol Hopefully it's not popular stuff in clubs.

As a DJ, I can tell you this: the only person who "owns" a song....is the DJ. Afterall, it's most likely HIS music/equipment he/she is using/playing for you, HE/SHE has already dl'd it, and paid for it. Unless a chick brings it in, and asks will she "own it" for that set only.
Only exceptions to the rules(How I did it):
MGR's "like" the song, and dont want you to play it for anyone else but them(sorry, they're your bosses)
Dancers hooks you up BIG TIME(meaning some serious scratch), and tell you"DO not play this for anyone else but me". $$$$ talks, and although I might like you as a person, you've never given me any shit, or anything else, unless you're willing to top whatever she's given me(which I'm almost certain you will not), you won't get it played for you.
I always used to say shit back like" Really? you're song? did you write the lyrics? Are you getting a royalty check from it? I didn't see your name(insert here) in the writing credits, therefore, it's not "YOUR SONG", IT'S MINE...pick another song, sit down, or deal with it".
