suicide caused by online harrassment
http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/200...lineharassment
Anyone hear about this? they are thinking about passing a law in Missouri that says online harrassment can be punishable for up to 90 days in jail. Good! Online harrassment is sometimes worse than the crap that happens in high school. That poor girl.

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
THis is such stupidity. NOBODY can make someone else kill themselves. Harassment is not cool, but blaming other people for a suicide is absolutely ridiculous. People need a thicker skin these days.
-
Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
^^Yup.
I'm sorry, if something online bugs you enough to spur suicide, there's a deeper problem.

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
Oh come on, she's a thirteen year old girl, how many kids are going to tell anyone what's really bothering them. If they think everyone hates them because their "boy friend" said so, the chance of them believing it is very real.
Kids need to be protected from bullies in school AND online. Their kids!
If my little sister was being harrassed like this, you bet I would want punishment for it!
-
Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
Um where were the parents monitoring her online activity?? If I had a teenager I would monitor EVERYTHING they did online and have the computer in the living room where everyone can see their activity. There are more than just pedos out there.
Thats bullshit saying it was someone else's fault for her suicide. She was probably unstable over something else and this just pushed her to the edge. Still, very sad she thought she had to kill herself.
-
Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
But had it been your sister, you probably would have logged on to her myspace page and known what was going on.
I'm just saying suicide doesn't happen in a vacuum.
-
Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
I agree with that and that you can't actually blame a person for someone elese's choices, BUT it is still not okay to torment another person. As a sister, I would hope my little sis would tell me what is happening, but kids can hide stuff, we know that.
I just am glad that they are trying to put an end to online bullying. IT should NOT be okay to do it. Yes, kids have their own opnions but what they can say or do to eachother can be downright monstrous and I can see where this poor kid would be distraught. Bullying really does affect people in different ways and none of them good.

This article contains a little more info. I still am fuming that an adult would be directly involved in harrasing this girl. She as an adult knew she was doing something wrong because she made sure that account was deleted once the girl died. Apparently there is an online mob that has been harrasing the culprit woman since the story broke.

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
Already posted.
I find it really interesting that everyone on THAT thread thought it was totally the parents' fault *the ones who made the page* and everyone here argues that it's not.
This shows how the media can play with our emotions, warping our views.

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
I agree nobody can make a person kill themselves. But in the girls defense, she was only 13 and still figuring out who she was, alot happens to our young bodies as we grow. 13 is a very tender age. And to hang out on myspace???
Her parents knew. Should have talked to their daughter ASAP about people and behaviour. Especially towards young children, yet her mother (parents) did not.
Online bullies are very very rude, nasty and can break down a young mind quickly. If she was weak or very strong, she made a choice.
What we have to KNOW is this is only words online! It's not our family and close friends that matter most of the time. These people are predators!
They prey on the young. How sad for her. Her mother should have stepped in ASAP. and talked to her about people and how mean they can be.
I say it's only words. And move on. I wish she was stronger and could do the same.

Sorry to have reposted.. I checked around first (promise)
I am glad that although bullying still continues people out there are stepping up for the bullied. In my siblings' schools you can get in a lot of trouble if you are caught harrassing another student. Even if it's "just for fun".
Stories like this just remind me of the harrassment I endured and at 13 it seemed the toughest to deal with. There was only such much my parent's could say to help with my own self esteem and I guess I just keep thinking about what could have been going through this girl's mind.
Hopefully stories like this will help other parent's, teachers, neighbors, and communities pay more attention to the kids an their thoughts and feelings and what is happening in their lives and minds.

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
This happened not far from me. Believe me, there's more than an ONLINE mob harassing the parent of the other girl. They are probably going to be run out of town.
No one can make anyone kill themselves, but the mother of the other girl is still like to be strung up if certain people get a hold of her. People here are MAD about it.

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
Wow. I would heavily, heavily beat the shit out of that mother. Along with internet shaming till the year 2100. Pathetic as the 13 year old might have been. What a pathetic, pathetic, evil fucking wench her friend's mother was. What if that was your mother? How embarrassing and how criminal.

Or what ever happened to just butting the F out of your 13 year old's girlfriend business??

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
10 years ago, I was the 13-year old whom everyone loved to pick on. I'm talking daily mobs screaming that I was a horrible, worthless, ugly little Jap who should die. People would rip hairs out of my hairs and destroy my stuff because they could. I was very tempted to commit suicide. Yes, it would have been my choice to commit suicide, but even a decade later, I consider that public spectacle of torment the worst I have ever experienced, and that's saying a lot.
Let me tell you right now that preteens and teens are the most horrible, hurtful, people on earth. All they care about is fitting in and have no qualms with gaining popularity at someone else's expense in an effort to divert negative attention to themselves. To us adults, they are children. To the tormented kids, they are life-sized and their egos are already fragile. The teen tormentors are at least are naive and should be disciplined. Lori Drew, the ex-friend's mom, is a fucking predator. She knew that Megan had a history of depression, and decided to toy with her knowing that she was hurting.
If you had read the article, you would have known that the parents DID monitor Megan's Myspace activity. They decided her password, logged her on and off, decided who she could add as friends, etc. Lori Drew made the Josh profile in order to gain Megan's trust. Even with good intentions of building her self-esteem like she claimed, this was still fraudulent. After a while, "Josh" tormented Megan and everyone started mobbing her.

Whatever happened to having some fucking consideration? If my mom heard me talking trash about someone, she'd smack me. If I had plotted to make a public spectacle of hating, she would have pulled the, "I brought you into this world; I can take you out of it." Like I said, kids don't know better. Parents have to teach this empathy and consideration. Lori Drew taught her daughter that it is okay to fuck with people's feelings, that ugly girls are okay as emotional punching bags, etc.

Wow!! The karma fairy in the form of a really angry mob. Also if the "Josh" mother had been doing stuff like that for years she probably had built a really bad reputation for herself with a lot of people. Hopefully they will move so that the victims family will not have to see them around anymore. Also it seems that if the "Josh" mom had not filed the police report about the trashed gametable from the victims family then people outside of the area would not have found her as easily. I wonder if someone like that can connect her behavior to the consequences she is suffering now?

She's so beautiful. I cannot believe that she's been taken in this matter. How fucking despicable.

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
Just wanted to point out, think of how those parents must feel with an angry mob hating them... it's probably very similar to what Megan felt o rthought people felt about her. I hope that mom get's the fuck beat out of her every day, and that other 13 yr old girl, I hope she gets spit on whereever she goes.

Re: suicide caused by online harrassment
thats totally crazy of a grown woman to do that crap, but um.. yeah, no one can make you kill yourself. every single one of you could post nasty crap on my myspace or on here or wherever else and i'm not going to kill myself. thats a sign of a MUCH deeper problem.

Ah okay - well that is really shitty. A 13 year old's ego is pretty fragile, and an ADULT should know better than to fuck with a child. That's really wrong. I still think no one but the girl is responsible for her death, but I think my first post was a little insensitive. I can't imagine how I'd feel if this was my daughter.
