micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
hey--
looking at having partial micro braids done or just braided extensions (where they braid about an inch of your hair near the scalp and braid in the fake hair.)
Wondering about the tying off part-- some people have said they tie it off with hair, some with nylon, some with thread. Some say if you tie off the hair there's a good chance that it could be tied too tight and basically cut the hair off over a period of time.
not sure what to believe, but out of all the methods I've researched (like wefts, invisible braids, or glue or wax) I like this one the best, so any advice would be helpful.
I know that as a white girl I shouldn't wash my hair more than once a week with braids in, right?
also-- I would like to keep the braids in for two-three months, and obviously I'll be getting real hair. I've been told what type to get, if I remember correctly, it's Remy? I know it's indian hair, and more expensive than other types.
so-- any advice for keeping in hair that long?

Bumpy...bump.
I would like to know the answer as well. I had my hair cut in long layers all over last week, but the back is far too short for me.
ALSO CAN YOU BUY BRAID IN EXTENSIONS ONLINE? I want them, not clip ons.
Thanks ladies ;)
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
I want to know the answer to this too. I've wanting to get my hair microbraided forever, but I cant seem to find any info on it pertaining to white peoples hair.
Not to threadjack, but what do you do when your hair starts to grow out? My hair grows fast, so would that mean I'd have to get them redone every couple of weeks to prevent them from looking grown out and tacky? How much do you think the whole process will cost?
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
I think so. They tighten them up. Someone told me you can buy braid in extensions on eBay...i can't find them....DAH.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
I've had the pinch braids where the braid is only about an inch from your scalp. The top of your natural hair is combed over the braids, so you can't tell the braids are there...it's just long loose extensions. Is that what you are talking about? I can tell you about those if so...
Mine were attached with thread. They really messed up my hair when I took them out, but that was probably because I took them out myself...BAD idea. Other than that, they were ok. And yeah, you go get them tightened when they grow out, and the stylist can suggest a time to get new hair put in all together.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
^ how messed up were they? do you think it was just because you took them out?
p.s. I know how to spell "question", I was just in a hurry ;D
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
I think my hair only got messed up because I took them out myself. I wasn't thinking and took them all out with scissors....smart huh? lol! I know...I'm a genius. Plus my hair is sort of weak.
They're worth trying out though. If your hair is strong and can stay in small braids like that, they're great because there's no chemicals to mess up your hair.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
My girlfriend cut hers out with scissors too. Duh?! She had them but they made the braids way too thick. It looked tacky. They were 2-3x's the size I think they should have been but I have seen girls at work with them and they look good.

Yea but, I cut the ones myself and I accidentally cut/ripped my real hair. I personally think I should have went and gotten them taken out.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
i have had the braided ones (where they like do two diaganal [sp?] braid type things then like tie in long hair in a row) for about 4 years now. Your real hair covers it. They are definitely worth it. You just have to get them tightened (or really like taken out and re-braided) every 6 weeks or so. The way I get them done are no less damaging then getting your hair high-lighted or straightening it a lot. You have to maintain them, though by always blow-drying them and I only wash my hair 2-3 a week.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
Ohh I was talking about 'pinch braids'.

Thats what she did when she took them out. Cut them (along with her real hair) out... but shes one of those people who hate hair. Her brother uses her to practice on because she doesnt care if he messes her hair up. That girls hair could all melt off and shed be happy about it. Im surprised she hasnt chopped it into a pixie cut yet. She talks about it but has such a round face Ive managed to talk her out of it...
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
yeah, I was talking about pinch braids. *bump*

Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
Can't you buy these anyplace online?
Thanks.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
^ebay like I posted on another thread. Also, Pamela, you asked about putting them in yourself:
here's a tutorial:
I think someone else should put them in though :( maybe you can trade labor with another girl who also wants pinch braids and you can practice on each other?
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
I had pinch braids. I probably wouldn't get them again because they came out so fast and they were expensive.
They told me to wash my hair once a week and never use conditioner at the roots. Don't use Clairol Herbal Essences because it will make your extensions stink really bad. Biosilk is good I hear.
I eventually just went to a chick in the ghetto who did my hair up in platinum waist-length synthetic braids for really cheap. And they looked awesome.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
^for how long? I'd rather get real hair and just have them tightened. And I too am going to a ghetto girl if I get this done. I just want good hair though.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
I got the synthetic braids (the hair is like $5 a bag and the girl charged $75) put in about every other month. Real hair might look better depending on your color. Looseness and unraveling probably looks a lot less noticeable with black hair instead of blonde.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
wow! you could wash that and have it look good? I heard from another girl that synthetic hair gets ratty after a couple of washes.
Re: micro braids or braided extensions quesiton
Synthetic hair won't last as long as human hair. If it is straight, you'll get it to last a bit longer- if it is curly, forget it...it will start tangling after a few days.
